Player Primer for Blood Moor

Welcome To The Island of Blood Moor

Welcome to Bloodmoor, a grim and treacherous frontier where survival is earned through cunning, courage, and steel. Nestled on the edge of the world these islands are known to be haunted by ancient evils and forces that even the Eternals do not dare to set foot. Serpphants Pass was built atop the ruins of a small fortress that stands high on a hilltop at The Mouth of the Wraithbone Cascade River and looking over FangtoothLake. Its inhabitants come from all different walks of life from across the single large connected of Tesslutut for various reasons. Everyone has a similar story about coming to get away.

As adventurers and conquerors, you’ve come to Bloodmoor driven by your own ambition, vengeance, or desperation. Banding Together you will manage the town of Serpahts Pass and defend your new home and citizens against this said uninhabitable land. Confront the different forces trying to pull your new kingdom apart. Your choices will shape the fate of all of Bloodmoor—if you survive long enough to make them. Will you be its savior or its next victim?

The Eternals:

This ruling class, called the “The Eternals'' is said to have been the makers of the world of Tesslutut. “Gods” walking among us. Creating the plane was done out of curiosity and the interests of The Council. Through their creativity, care, and divine power they pooled their magic together to create the leylines. By bringing this to existence and shaping the flow of this magic they were able to make the plane of Tesslutut. Magic and technology:

Magic is everywhere.

Almost every being is connected to magic through 5 different invisible currents called the Leylines. These currents of magical energy crisscross the land, sky, and sea. These leylines are particularly potent near Bloodmoor and its islands, where they converge, causing unpredictable surges in power and reality-altering effects. Spellcasters who can tap into these currents often find their magic amplified—but at what cost?

Technology:

The world ofTesslutut has entered a Technomagic Era, a unique blend of medieval craftsmanship, enlightenment innovation, and magical ingenuity. This age is defined by the convergence of practical engineering and arcane power, giving rise to advancements that push the boundaries of what is possible in both war and society. But Bloodmoor itself is slightly behind that the main land. You will find a degree lesser than one would find anywhere else in the world.

House rules:

  • Starting level 9, 850 GP.
  • Any uncommon or higher feats/abilities/items must be approved by DM first.
  • See Leylines for additional rules.

Genre, mood, and tone

These are part of the meta, but it’s a good idea to give your players a basic rundown to make sure everyone’s on the same page.

  • Genre: Dark Fantasy with Gothic and Exploration Elements,

The Bloodmoor campaign blends the grim and haunting elements of dark fantasy with the adventurous spirit of exploration. Magic and mystery saturate the world, but they come at a cost. Characters navigate a harsh, morally ambiguous landscape where ancient curses, eldritch horrors, and the remnants of long-lost civilizations define the challenges they face. The genre also incorporates steampunk-like technomagic, emphasizing a clash between innovation and tradition.

  • Tone: Serious, Gritty, and Reflective,

The tone of Bloodmoor is unflinching and mature, focusing on themes of survival, consequence, and sacrifice. The campaign challenges players to grapple with complex moral dilemmas: Do they risk upsetting fragile alliances for personal gain? Do they delve into forbidden magics or exploit dwindling resources to survive? Tragedy and loss are inevitable, but so too are triumphs and moments of hope for those who persevere. While the tone is serious, it is not devoid of levity. Dark humor, ironic twists, and character-driven banter provide a brief but welcome respite from the campaign's heavy atmosphere.

  • Mood: Foreboding, Mysterious, and Tense
Bloodmoor exudes an ever-present sense of unease, where the land and sea seem to conspire against those who venture too far. The weather, from unrelenting snow in the winter to suffocating fog. The Island beckons explorers with promises of riches and power, but each step forward deepens the feeling that something watches from the shadows. Despite this tension, moments of wonder and beauty break through—a crystalline sunset over the cold icy waters of the Fangtooth or the soft glow of the floating willow wisp lights in an ancient ruin on in island in the middle of a lake.

Creating your Character

1. Set up your account

If you don't have an account already, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to worldanvil.com and click “Create your account” at the top right.
  2. Enter your email address, username, and password. Then, click Register.
  3. Complete the short account setup process!

Pro Tip: If you want to use your account only for playing in someone else’s campaign, you can disable Worldbuilding and RPG features during the account creation process. Make sure to keep the Character Manager enabled!

2. Create your character

Once you have an account, your next step will be to create your character!

On World Anvil, characters are made up of a character sheet and a profile. The sheet has all the mechanical details of your character (such as abilities and attributes), while the profile holds your backstory, personality, and other character details.

To create a character:

  1. Click the world/character switcher in the top menu bar (see image below).
  2. Click the “Characters” tab.
  3. Click the “New Character ” button.

After you save changes, your character will be created! Next, add a character sheet:

  1. On the left sidebar, click the settings gear and then the edit profile button.
  2. Scroll down to find the “Create/Choose character sheet” button.
  3. In the new screen, choose the RPG system and sheet type you want to use for your character.

After clicking the button to confirm, you’ll have an empty sheet to fill out! How you go about filling it will depend on the system and campaign your playing—ask your GM if you need help.

 3. Join the campaign

At some point during this process, your GM will send you an invitation link. Depending on what the GM prefers, you’ll get it by email or your preferred communication channel.

To join the campaign, simply click the link and choose the character you want to join it with when prompted.

4. Write about your backstory

A character is more than a list of numbers and abilities—a solid backstory is how you make them come to life! On World Anvil, you can use the character’s extended profile to write as much as you want about it:

  1. On the left sidebar, click the settings gear and then the lock icon to edit the advanced profile.
  2. Fill out the text fields that you need.
  3. Click “Save changes” to save your profile!

Remember that all text fields are optional, so use those that make sense for your character and ignore the rest! You can always go back to it later to update the profile as the campaign develops.

 YOU MUST INCLUDE:

  1. Where are you from? (This will help be experienced in at least one location in the world)
  2. Why you are adventuring? (The average person doesn't just get up grab a sword and fight dragons)
  3. How does your class relate? (Not saying exactly why you chose it, but how does it correlate to your backstory)
  4. One or more NPC's (These can be allies, enemies, etc. but they should be someone you would know in the world.
  5. The more you fill out the more in-depth your character is.

5. Play in a game!

When a GM starts a session on World Anvil, you can join it as a player to have access to a few handy tools. Here’s how to get to the live player screen:

  1. Wait for your GM to start a session.
  2. Go to your character’s profile by clicking the name of your character on the left sidebar.
  3. Click the “Enter session” button to open the player screen:

The player screen includes your character sheet, a dice roller, a scrapbook to take notes, easy access to the setting’s lore, and more!

6. Manage your character and party

As a player, you have a ton of tools available to you that will make playing in a campaign easier! Here are all of them, top to bottom in the left sidebar:

  • Equipment: track the items you’re carrying, including their weight (if relevant for your RPG system).
  • Journals: write about what happened during the game! See the next section for more information.
  • Memories: a list of all memories you’ve taken while browsing the GM’s world. See below for more information.
  • Quests: use this to track your ongoing and past quests. It’s especially useful for longer campaigns with multiple parallel quests!
  • Sheet: this is your character sheet—use the Edit button at the top to edit it.
  • Settings: you can edit your profile from here, as well as other configuration options for your character.

7. Write a session journal

Writing about what happened in the game can be a great way to organize your thoughts and keep a clear record of what happened. This is especially useful in long campaigns, but it can be fun in all sorts of games! Here’s how you can do it on World Anvil:

  1. After the session ends, click on “Journals” in the left sidebar.
  2. Click the “Create a new Journal Entry” button to get started.
  3. Write your journal and, when you’re done, choose the related session at the bottom of the page.
  4. Click “Sign & Post” to finish the journal. You can still edit it afterward!

Make sure to share the journal with your GM and fellow players!

7. Be part of your GM's world

If you enjoy your games, consider taking a more active role in the group between sessions! Take a look at the GM’s world on World Anvil—this will not only show your GM that their hard work is paying off, but it will also make you a better player because you’ll know more things about the world. Here are some things you can do:

  • Write memories: While browsing the world of your campaign, you’ll see a little panel on the left that includes an “Add Memory” button. You can use it to add notes to the article that only you can see. Really useful to remember things like suspicions, theories, and discoveries!
  • Leave comments: If you have questions about the worldbuilding you’ve read, leave a comment with it. The GM will see it and will probably be thrilled to answer it! Make sure to leave a like to show appreciation for the GM’s work too.
  • Offer to build parts of the world: Depending on your group’s dynamics, you could ask your GM to build an area of the world related to your character (like a location or an NPC). If they agree, ask them to add you as a Writer to the world!
