Duskhan Army

Commanded by the Emperor and led by the Marshal, the army comprises the land-based military force of the Duskhan Empire. This is a professional, standing army relatively new to the Empire, having been instituted in its current form less than a century again. Before that, military was called up from the citizenry as needed. However, the increased threats the empire faces now require the faster response of a trained and ready military.   Currently the army is a small professional force, meant to be deployed quickly to trouble spots, and once there raise local forces as auxiliaries to flesh out the force.   Horse or other mounts are often used to deploy rapidly, and for skirmishing actions, but heavy cavalry is generally only ever employed to run down and destroy an already defeated, broken and fleeing army. This is due to the expense of training, maintaining, and replacing beasts of war.   Units may be comprised of footmen, bowmen, slingers, or relatively close-range weapons such as spells, hand-thrown missiles, and guns, but are usually uniform in makeup. A unit featuring war engines is comprised of half the personnel as a regular army unit and is considered auxiliary.   Approximate size of an army is 900 to 2500 soldiers. Auxiliary forces can make up to half the size of an army, growing it to as much as 5000 soldiers in total. Auxiliary force makeup and unit size tends to vary, but generally the basic unit size is 10 cavalry, skirmishers or scouts.

Knighthood

A successful military career as an officer can lead to a permanent honorary, civilian title of Knight. This is not hereditary, but usually brings with it an award of land, property, and wealth. Land thus granted is usually along the frontier, providing veteran military leadership right where the Empire most needs it. Knighthood of this kind is bestowed upon those who achieve a rank of Knight Captain or higher.
