Divine Goals & Aspirations

Like with a lot of information surrounding the god, most of its goals and aspirations are a mystery. However, it is tied to darkness and shadow as well as forbidden and lost knowledge. It is one of several minor gods that are informally known as “deep sea gods” due to their odd behavior, and often equally odd uses of magic. As well as most of them having a connection to fear. To the god, darkness and silence are the natural state of the universe, but most mortals and even gods do not seem to realize this. So they must be made to realize the inevitability of the darkness as one of the the few true constants in the universe, and the one thing the universe will return to. If there is light a shadow will always be cast but darkness does not rely on light to exist in the same manner. Acknowledging the truths of the dark will also cause people to acknowledge the true scope of Umbra’s power as a god of darkness. Most of their worship seems to come from fear of them and the night. So it tends to go out of its way to cultivate this fear so that mortals, and even some gods, may remember their place in the world and the inevitability of everlasting darkness. To this end it also has a hatred of gods associated with light, such as John de Luminarie and Appylon. This is partially because Umbra itself seems to have a weakness to strong sources of light. The god also finds many forms of light simply irritating and wishes to one day snuff out all light. It could also be that gods who preside over light potentially take away from Umbra’s worship and followers as people might pray to them for protection instead of Umbra when left in the darkness. Either way, they are an “enemy” to basically all things light. They spare members of their cult and also show a surprising level of mercy and care towards those who pray to it even if they are not a part of its cult. Due to the god’s weakness to light it is very methodical when interacting with the surface. Spending most of its time deep beneath the waves of teh ocean before striking or arriving in specific areas at specific times(usually at night). The god often uses terror tactics to make its mark on mortal minds and enemies.     Umbra wishes to trap the world in a state of everlasting and permanent night. Something that the god sees as an eventual inevitability anyway. Some suspect that it could also possibly cement Umbra as the most powerful minor god. If it had the power of an eternal night at its back then it could outlast the likes of Fervanti, Yung, John, Tekuani, and Appylon in a battle of attrition.     The god and some of its followers and creations are known to sabotage almost any and all mortal attempts to travel into space. Claiming that space “is not yet within the understanding of mere mortals.” Some suspect that this is a flex of power or to increase the amount of fear, awe and reverence mortals have towards it, as it is a god associated with space and the darkness that stretches between the stars. Others worry that the god is actually trying to protect Terra or its worshippers from something that lies beyond the bounds of their planet. Many tell stories of Umbra witnessing a terrible future that occurs if mortals travel to space too early while glimpsing into the roots of fate during a meeting of the gods. While space has been traversed by humans of the distant past the reintroduction of magic has made the world a much more chaotic place. The War of Black Ash also caused space travel to cease. Of course, sentient species on modern Terra lack the immunity to magic so who is to say what new magical horrors, imperceptible to humans, now lie within the eternal void. Occasionally, a satellite, probe, or rocket from ages long gone will fall from the skies back on to Terra. These objects seem to be of great interest to Umbra. Sometimes when someone looks to space searching for radio signals they will hear the screams and cries of... something. All the humans residing in satellites are long gone so some believe that some other lifeform or machine on one or more satellites is still up there while others claim that whatever is up there is human no longer. However, it is more likely these sounds are actually just the work of Umbra striking fear into the populace from deep below the ocean’s surface. There exist a myriad of rumors that Umbra has been tasked by Mora and/or Shia themselves to prevent mortals from achieving space travel for all kinds of reasons. But this has yet to be officially confirmed or acknowledged by any of the gods.     Umbra is also a god of the unknown and forbidden knowledge. While it usually isn’t privy to sharing very much it actually knows all manner of secrets and dark truths. Umbra also acted as an assassin for other gods in the past. Ensuring mortals who come across information they should not know keep their mouths shut or simply snuffing them out when there is no other way to silence them. One story details that they were once sent out by Mora and Shia themselves due to how effective they are at this. It goes that sometimes simply knowing something can be harmful to mortals or the natural order. There are many stories of Umbra punishing mortals for sticking their noses where it does not belong or for gaining knowledge that is better left forgotten.     While their actual cult isn’t as big as the likes of Fervanti’s, the actual scope of its worship is massive as many cultures fear the god as a boogeyman-like entity. This causes some to pray to the god so that they may be granted its mercy. Proper respect or behavior must be given to the god in many areas when traversing through the night or dark areas. A myriad of stories detail disobedient children that were dragged away by the god which lies in shadow. Some while wandering where their parents told them not to and others for refusing to go to bed at night. Some of these stories end with the child in question never being returned while others detail them being returned safely, but shaken, after being taught a lesson. Some of the morbid stories detail children returning different. Altered in some way by some sort of magic. Many children have some sort of night light specifically to keep away Umbra; many pray to it as an extra measure or if they are left without any light. Some also worry that the strange sounds one can hear at night or in the darkness have a chance of being Umbra or one of its heralds or followers. Simultaneously, the lack of silence may be caused by the presence of Umbra scaring away almost all other lifeforms or isolating a target.     Umbra seems to be heavily opposed to the creation of another god of lightning and goes through great lengths to try to prevent it from happening. Presumably, this is because of the connection between lightning and light. Also, the reinstatement of lightning mana would empower many gods associated with it and would cause all kinds of headaches for the god since this would give some gods a new leg up over Umbra.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

The mortal form of Umbra is odd and alien. Rather than transforming into a mortal form like a mermidae or vampire, the god takes on something that can be likened to a humanoid form by compressing its true form into something resembling a humanoid shape. The body appears to be composed of various squid tentacles and arms as pitch-black ink flows in, from, and around its body. Giving it the appearance of a living shadow or that a space devoid of light has been granted life and form. The totality of its form is often obscured as some of its ink evaporates into a pitch-black cloud/mist. Its body shape and type is constantly changing. Their body is supernaturally heavy, much more than one of its size should be. Most likely due to the odd nature of its “mortal” form. Whenever it is on the surface the weight of its body creates noticeable imprints into whatever surface it is walking on, no matter how tough the substance is. Weaker things and mortals will become crushed as if the entire weight of the deep ocean rested upon their backs if they are unlucky enough to be stepped on.

Facial Features

They have a “face” that, like the rest of their body, is actually tentacles and arms that have been forced to hold a humanoid shape. This face resembles a white mask with swirling lines and shapes made from the tentacles that it is composed of. However, despite the fact that it feels like a stone to the touch, it is not static and it is constantly moving and contorting with various patterns and shapes in order to display the squid god’s mood and “expressions.” When Umbra speaks, its face opens up between the swirls and lines that run across it. When it opens its face like this, rows upon rows of teeth can be seen behind its “mask.” The face Umbra wears has a single opening that resembles a black featureless eye. This “mask” can unfurl revealing that the “teeth” behind it are actually the spines of suckers on the god’s tentacles. The tentacles of its mask surround a black-beaked maw that can devour mortals in one bite. The face can be removed like a mask despite being an organic part of their body. Wearing it is said to fill those who are worthy with the knowledge of Umbra and devour the face of any who are not(eaving a blank featureless smooth surface where their face once was).

Identifying Characteristics

While usually impossible to see, it is missing an arm that it lost when Fervanti tore it off in a fight. This is much easier to see in its divine form.     Umbra’s true / divine form is one of the most terrifying sights a mortal can lay upon eyes on. Some stories chronicle that merely seeing it in its entirety fills mortals with despair as they come face to face with their insignificance of the universe or the inevitability that they and everything they know within the universe will one day fade to black. Said form is a massive, kraken-like, squid that is only somewhat smaller than the likes of Nagi. With the proper application of illusion magic Umbra can give the illusion that this form is much bigger. The true divine form has black spikes and protrusions along all the squid’s suckers. What one can only assume to be Umbra’s eyes resembles massive black holes and it appears to distort light around it in a similar manner. These eyes passively drain the aura of any mortals it gazes upon. Much of Umbra’s true appearance is unknown as an endless amount of pitch-black ink is released and reabsorbed by its body. This ink absorbs any and all light causing Umbra to look like a manifestation of living darkness itself, or a writhing black mass. Much of this ink takes the form of a dark cloud that can envelope nearby areas in darkness. When enough of this ink has gathered a pitch-black rain will pour forth from them. No official measurements have been made, but apparently enough ink can be released to create entire rivers or lakes. It should be noted that water affected by various magics may be immune to these effects. While usually impossible to see, this form is missing a tentacle(as it was ripped off at one point by Fervanti). When this form “speaks” it makes the “opposite of a sound.” That is to say when it should be speaking anyone that would be in range of said sound will only hear all other noises suddenly falling quiet or becoming muffled for the duration of the “noise.” However, due to being a god anything said entity speaks will be understood just fine.

Special abilities

It has mastered terrifying applications of water, and death magic as well as all kinds of shadow and spacial magic alongside those that have to do with ink.       The water it can conjure or wield is brackish and dark as the deepest parts of the ocean. It can also deliver weight and pressure equal to these crushing depths. Those hit with this water may feel the entirety of the very ocean on their backs. It is also a master of the coldest of ice magics. Allowing them to bring the temperature of the deepest oceans, darkest winter nights, or coldest reaches of space with them wherever they seem to go. It can also use magic to create an area of low or zero gravity around it like that of space.     The god is capable of creating a black ink that blinds mortal eyes if it manages to make contact with said organ. People afflicted with this ink will have their eyes become pitch-black spheres that reflect not an ounce of light. This condition can be cured if one’s eyes simply makes direct contact with sunlight. The god is also capable of using ink to create magical tattoos. Which it can use to grant gifts or abilities of the deep dark upon those it favors or respects. These tattoos can also be forcefully grafted onto a person to alter their biology, transforming one or more parts of them into wretched nightmares of shadow or inflicting various curses until the tattoo is removed. Some shadows are alive and act as parasites or symbiotic creatures with whoever bears them. Some of their ink can be used to create magical runes or words and many often accursed magical scrolls, books, and writings have had their pages filled with this ink. Some of these books have covers and pages made from either Umbra’s own flesh or the flesh of other living things, and some have an approximation of their own life or will. The functions of the writings are wide and varied. Some contain forbidden knowledge, others contain potent and powerful magic or just curse the reader(s). Some even grant the reader some sort of ability(usually at the cost of being bound or subservient to Umbra in some way).     Its ink can be released as either a pitch black liquid or clouds of gas that in large enough volumes can block out the sun in a given area. This gas also puts out all fire created via mortal means and interferes with electric appliances, such as light bulbs and tv screens. It also does not conduct electricity, and actually causes it to dissipate quicker. While the fire of the gods or their boons will continue to burn they are slightly weakened. However, stronger gods can overcome this factor.     The god is known to sometimes devour mortals that anger or displease it. Those who are eaten usually aren’t killed. Often their essence is moved into a new body or physical form that furthers the gods' will. Living shadows that swim through the water or crawl upon the land. Some hide plain sight within darkness and shadows(often because they have a weakness towards fire and shadow). Some are turned into a living weapons or tools.     The god has ways of possessing dead bodies by filling them with ink or dark water. It can also create puppets of shadow by manipulating its ink.     It is capable of performing sound magic through the use of wind magic to a degree. But it typically only does this to perform silencing magic that renders other sound based magic useless and silences the area around it.   It can also wield magic related to nightmares and can shape its ink into creatures based on one’s fear or instill nightmares into those sleeping within the range of its aura. Also, anyone who wakes up within range of their aura may be inflicted with sleep paralysis for time. Umbra is also capable of wielding life magic but the type it calls upon is odd and strange, typically distorting or corrupting mortals affected by it.     Umbra is capable of disguising itself by wearing the skin of other animals. These disguises are disturbingly convincing. But those that can see essence can recognize them quite easily. It can also possess people by crawling inside of them. This process does not kill the affected but it is quite painful.     Umbra does have proficiency in some forms of illusion magic. Specifically, when it comes to using it to cause a place to appear darker or render someone blind. It is also capable of making things invisible in the dark by using said magic.     Most of Umbra’s strength is tied to darkness. So if it is outside a sufficient level of darkness it is greatly weakened and some gods with a connection or proficiency to light or powerful powerful enough fire magic can take advantage of this.     Like many of the older gods, it has had many children but not children in the traditional sense. Instead, it can devour mortals and rebirth them as one of its demigods. Some truly desperate and heartless souls may offer up their own children to Umbra in hopes the god will take their child and grant them the benefits of certain demigods. These children of Umbra often have odd traits like pitch black eyes that reflect no light, translucent skin, appear to be totally monochrome, or have all the body fluids in their body resemble ink. Many of these demigods take the form of monstrous creatures.     “Umbra” is merely a nickname given to the giant squid god. While it does have a true name the name in its entirety is unknown to mortals. The length of the name is too long for most to comprehend and contains sounds and syllables that only those with the form changing capabilities and power of a god could hope to replicate. Seeing the name written out anywhere is known to put so much strain on the eyes because of a unique optical illusion and perfectly sculpted shapes that it renders any mortal who looks upon it blind. Likewise, hearing the actual name pronounced correctly would render anything less than a god deaf while if a mortal attempted to speak it they would find their vocal cords and tongue shredded due to the strain the sounds put on them. Rendering them mute.     Umbra is very durable and can survive the crushing pressure of the depths and many powerful blows with ease.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Much of their history is a mystery. They are a god as old as the likes of Fervanti and Olrath but do not seem to get along particularly well with them or even operate on the same wavelength one would assume gods of their age and stature do.     As for its creation, there are three major myths that people tend to subscribe to. The first one says that the god was born in the blackness of the void between the stars. As the dragons revealed themselves humanity crumbled and communication across the globe was cut off. Several space stations orbiting Terra had become cut off from the world below them and left to die in the cold uncaring vacuum of the abyss. But some managed to survive for a time. Having some degree of sustainability as plants, and fungus grew, allowing for some semblance of sustenance. However, one of these stations malfunctioned and all their lights were turned off. Leaving them in total darkness. Slowly, all the lifeforms on it began to die one by one and out of desperation they performed all manner of abominable acts. However, the satellite soon fell out of orbit and into the ocean. Sinking all the way to the bottom of its deepest parts. In tandem with the fear, magic, and chaos that filled Terra at the time something was soon born in the remains of the satellite. A god born of darkness, magic, and mortal fear. Some would begin to fear all these new unknown factors or realize that in truth, they knew nothing about the cold uncaring universe as their very civilizations and livelihoods crumbled around them. Something that Umbra’s very existence further reinforced.     The other myth states that Umbra was simply born in the darkest depths of the ocean. As the dragons rampaged many forms of communication were put out of commission and there were many blackouts. The fear and chaos in combination with the fading light that once lit humanity and their civilization led to the birth of Umbra, or at least an increase in its power.     The final myth states that the god was born from the secrets of mortals and gods. That Umbra once took the form of a well kept living secret with no physical form. However, a god or mortal revealed a secret of the world and the gods that they were not supposed to to other mortals. Causing Umbra to be born in a quite violent manner from their body. This version of the myth is often used as a warning towards snitches.     Early in the history of the gods, before the light of John de Luminarie, or Appylonn graced mortals(and before they were graced by the strength of Yung Pagoni), Umbra sought to take advantage of the confusion and chaos of the mortals to make its mark. Rising suddenly from the sea and showing mortals and minor gods alike that its power at the time was only surpassed by the major gods. That was until it came across Fervanti. The first other god it met that was as powerful and strong as it was, and possibly even more so. At first the fight was an even match, drawing to a standstill. However, Fervanti was soon made privy to its weakness towards light and managed to draw the fight out until the sun began to rise once again, despite the length of the cold winter night. With that Fervanti was able to handily defeat the god and force it to run back to the ocean after tearing off one of its tentacles. This was a significant blow to the god’s influence and some parts of Umbra’s cult elected to throw their lot in with Fervanti. This interaction led to the birth of a myth that claims the reason wolves howl at night is as a symbol of triumph. For Fervanti bested the darkness itself and now wolves nor mortals need only cower in fear of what may hide in the dark. Some say the howl is also a warning for Umbra to stay away from certain areas. This victory is also what made the other gods and mortals privy to just how big Umbra’s weakness to light was.     At some point the god came into conflict with John de Luminarie, Goddess of Fireflies, and while John managed to best the god it still managed to strike John several times and left a tattoo-like mark around his neck before being driven off. John is one of the gods Umbra comes into conflict with most often. It also often comes into conflict with the god of sperm whales.     While having strength on par with the likes of Fervanti and Yung in sufficient darkness, the true scope of its strength and influence is severely limited by its weakness to strong sources of light, such as the sun, and heavy reliance on darkness. Meaning that if someone were to actually average out its power it would overall be weaker than gods like Fervanti and Yung and only as strong as them when it is in the proper amount of darkness. It spends most of its time safe and at full strength in the dark depths of the ocean. Presiding over a “world of shadows.” Performing precise strikes when it is at a sufficient level of strength or to help fill mortal minds with fear and the truth that one-day darkness will reign.

Gender Identity

Umbra does not care about gender and sees it as a small-minded concept born from small-minded mortals. They do not care about what pronouns one refers to them as. Different parts of the cult may refer to it with different pronouns but most refer to Umbra with it / its pronouns or simply Umbra.

Personality Characteristics

Likes & Dislikes

It goes without saying that Umbra loves darkness and shadows. It also enjoys seeing the different emotional reactions and biological processes that result from the fear of others. It also enjoys feeling powerful and is known to be very prideful. It enjoys the peaceful tranquility of the night, especially when it's accompanied by the relaxing sound of rain. Sometimes it can be seen sitting on the surface of bodies of water, or in rare cases on the lands of the surface, still as a statue, as it lets the pleasant feeling of raindrops fall over its body. It looks down on most mortals outside its cult or those who do not understand the power / inevitability of darkness. It does seem to enjoy educating people in its own weird way(often accompanied by prophetic nightmares and / or fear) but it also values the power of the unknown and lies. It seems to love taunting other minor gods and giving snide remarks.     It is known to be sensitive to various types of light and have a distaste for bright lights and sound. It also greatly dislikes the sun, sunlight, and light pollution along with fire and lightning.

Vices & Personality flaws

Its pride can sometimes become arrogance. Especially, when they are in a place of total darkness. However, they fall completely silent when exposed to enough light, becoming mute.

Personality Quirks

When at a sufficient level of power it tends to talk down to most other minor gods. It usually does this by calling them “little” followed by whatever they’re the god of. For example, Fervanti would be “Little Wolf” and John de Luminarie would be “Little Firefly.” It also shows less respect towards the major gods than the average minor god(with the exception of the major god of fire). But the amount it shows is not zero and they are at least wary of the power the major gods have over it. However, when they are caught in daylight or strong enough light they fall silent and do not speak. Whether this is because they choose not to or simply can’t is unknown. In this weakened state they simply use gestures, dreams, or manipulate their ink in order to convey what they mean. However, they are still known to show annoyance in this state.     It sees mortals as lesser but tend to pity them due to their comparatively short lifespans and inability to grasp certain divine concepts or truths. It doesn’t show much care towards mortals that do not pray to them and does not give them a lot of mercy. It will however, spare anyone who prays to them or shows proper reverence even if they are not in their cult.

Relationship Reasoning

Umbra still holds a grudge against Fervanti for stopping its plans of bringing the world into eternal night. Fervanti is also one of the few minor gods that can hold their own against an Umbra that is at the zenith of its strength despite lacking an association or divine domain having to do with light(but Fervanti is notably proficient with fire mana). Fervanti can also beat Umbra quite easily in a direct fight if it is not at full strength. Members of the Pack of Fervanti must remain extra vigilant at night when in certain areas, especially during the long nights of winter, lest the more violent/aggressive followers or creatures of Umbra rear their ugly heads. However, these forces may overlook them if they pay proper respect. The cults of these two gods frequently come to blows. Umbra usually avoids fighting Fervanti directly unless it is at peak strength. However, even then Fervanti can usually just drag the fight out until he can win the fight. Fervanti is also extremely proficient with fire mana, so he can usually drive Umbra off. Some see the two gods as some sort of counterpart. With one being a hunter of the lands and the other being a hunter of the seas.

Umbra loathes JL due to the fact that they are strongly associated with light and wield powerful light magic, and light acts as Umbra’s only major weakness. John is the god that most often ends up foiling Umbra’s plans since they are both gods that are usually active at night. Plus, John is one of the more powerful light gods. Some priests of the Luminarie Cult specialize in dispelling and combating the influences and works of Umbra. Rumors even say that the Unseen Ray of the cult was originally created to combat Umbra. At one point, during a fight, Umbra managed to strike John and left a tattoo mark around the firefly goddess’ neck.

Relationship Reasoning

Yung is one of the few minor gods that Umbra cannot overpower even when Umbra is at its most powerful despite Yung lacking any divine connection to light on top of lacking a major proficiency with fire mana. Thus, Umbra does not like Yung as the peacock god will sometimes show up to stop it from overpowering minor gods and mortals alike. While Umbra can be very patient it is also known to be an aggressive god when the moment to strike arises. So Yung ends up having to break apart fights it is involved in often.

Out of all the major gods Nagi seems to be the god Umbra interacts with the most. Apparently, Nagi has at least witnessed to the truth of the dark depths, something that is fueled with mortal hearsay and rumors in regards to the bite marks and scars on Nagi. While, in reality, Nagi was simply bitten and attacked before reaching its current size, some are convinced that below the ocean waves lies something even bigger than Nagi. Something that only Nagi, Umbra, and some of the gods of the deepest darkest ocean depths are aware of, along with Mora and Shia. However, some suspect that this relationship can simply be attributed to the fact that Nagi is the god of water and oceans that Umbra resides in and some think Umbra is using Nagi to invoke fear and respect into mortals towards the mysteries of the ocean and gods related to it. However, Umbra find's Nagi's bioluminescence slightly annoying.

Relationship Reasoning

Umbra has a distaste for the dragon and the solar dragonflight in general due to their powerful sun magic. As the powerful light of said magic often gives them an advantage when fighting Umbra. Umbra takes great glee in making an example out of a member of the solar dragonflight whenever possible. For members of Umbra’s Cult, slaying a solar dragonflight member is usually enough to earn them the favor of the god and great prestige. Leading to Umbra and the dragonflight’s leader becoming natural enemies. There has been a noticeable increase in mortals turning to Umbra during the War of the Moon as they pray that its chilling darkness may shield them from the scorching sunlight of Aien Sol De Draco and his powerful followers.

Relationship Reasoning

Umbra has a distaste for the dragon and her respective dragonflight. This is mostly because of her plan to claim dominion over the moon. A celestial body of light that Umbra greatly dislikes, and it dislikes most gods associated with it already. Ironically though, Umbra is a god that has a slight association with the new moon, painting a target on its back. If it was up to Umbra the moon’s light would have already been devoured by the darkness between the stars, and one day it inevitably will be anyway. While Umbra does appreciate mortals having a “healthy” fear of the night it does not care for them fearing the power of the moon’s light. This only adds to the many reasons Umbra has to fight against Neia Lun de Draco and her followers. During the War of the Moon there has been a noticeable increase in mortals turning to Umbra as they hope that its domain of night, darkness, and the unknown will help them fight back against the lunar dragonflight and their respective lunar magic. As well as obscure them in the safety of the night’s darkness in order to avoid attacks. Interestingly, there are records of Umbra having worked with Neia Lun De Draco on at least a couple of occasions in the past. But this appears to solely be out of some mutual benefit. Ever since the war started Umbra has taken a great glee out of making “examples” out of Neia Lun De Draco’s followers whenever possible. To remind them that “The moon you so desperately cling to is no source of power, for even its light must dim and it will be swallowed by darkness.”

The crane god has fought Umbra on several occasions, and has even managed to beat it more than a couple of times due to their masterful use of fire mana. That does not mean these fights were easy however. Members of the Crane Cult must typically avoid crossing Umbra’s territories at night without the proper offerings and / or respect. Lest they risk their ships being pulled down to the bottom of the ocean by the squid god or strange oceanic entities of the night. Many ships simply just avoid Umbra’s territories at night and even the ships that pass through often have tales of strange and nightmarish creatures or occurences.

Relationship Reasoning

Umbra does not get along with Ana and Nancy as the spider gods are gods related to knowledge and surveillance while Umbra is related to secrecy and the like. While they do both have a connection to forbidden knowledge Umbra does not like how much Ana and Nancy’s constant prying and spying. Meanwhile Ana and Nancy do not like Umbra’s proclivity of hiding knowledge or rendering it all but lost.

Relationship Reasoning

Umbra finds Robeulalie to be loud and annoying. They have fought each other on several occasions, of which John or Yung has intervened most of these times. There are rumors that say Robeulalie’s guitar was made from the bones of Umbra or that she tricked Umbra into giving her the instrument. Robeulalie does find him kind of metal though.

Relationship Reasoning

They get along surprisingly great as Umbra’s philosophy that one day everything will fade to darkness and Nergalzeb’s belief that all will rot, decay, and die seem to mesh well together. They have their spats and philosophical disagreements and they aren’t friends but their relationship is probably the closest thing Umbra has to a friend. Also, Nergalzeb has a bigger emphasis on the importance of life than Umbra. From Umbra’s perspective, death and darkness will always eventually triumph over life in the end while Nergalzeb sees no real difference between life and death. The distinction of life and death is but an illusion to the fly god.
