Session 5: Dress With Pockets (Wondrous Item)
General Summary
In the late afternoon, the party talked to patrons of the Torch & Tankard, including Taewyn, the lithe sun elf proprietress. A male dwarf was a big fan of Rome, having seen her at the Myas'tarapalooza festival some years prior. The party set out to find Kina Veslynd, figuring she'd be more likely to be found in the large casino in the Sunlit Sands district of Eleth Lilanor than in her nearby home on the lowest tier of Light's Rise.
Wandering through Lorinae's sector of the Sprawl, the party took in the shops with Rome stopping to purchase an elegant blue dress. As the elevation descended to sea level, the party came out into the Sunlit Sands, Eleth Lilanor's resort district. Here, the party entered Underhill's, the large casino and hotel complex that dominates the beachfront. Heading in to the House Of Cards, Rome immediately went to talk to Francesca Underhill, the elderly halfling proprietress, to see about joining the evening's live entertainment. Ogvai observed that Francesca's two bodyguards had magical brass knuckles in their pockets, and that Francesca herself wore a magical amulet. The party was directed to Mathis, the gnome stage manager, a large fan of Rome, who agreed to bump an earlier act and push everyone else forward to give Rome the two prime slots of the night.
While Rome and Mathis discussed the pyrotechnic aspects of her show, Doug and Ogvai went to see if they could find Kina, or find out more about her. Doug chatted up some twilight elf bouncers, but discovered little as he attempted to talk about half-elves in general without relating to Kina.
Ogvai, disguising himself as a dwarf, sat down at the high-roller's table, winning 1,000 gp, while giving up a few of the crystals recovered from the Ebon Axes to J'Dira, a female tabaxi from Dro'Desh. A member of The Gleam, she extended Ogvai with an invitation to visit the city, deeply desiring more crystals. J'Dira revealed that she knew Kina, and had heard that it had been over two weeks since Kina was last in the House of Cards, and nearly two months since J'Dira had last gambled with Kina. J'Dira recommended checking Kina's home, as well as referring to a mysterious casino built on an airship that never stayed in one place and had exclusive clientele.
After eating well on food comped by Franesca, the party prepared for Rome's show as the previous act and former headliner, sun elf guitarist Jonathan Verdantwood, finished his set and introduced Rome, an old acquaintance. Rome launched into a fantastic set, wowing the crowd. As she walked offstage before a first encore, intended to be a duet with Jonathan, a nothic came tearing through the crowd and ran onto the stage, turning its deadly eye beam on a woman in the front row, killing her, before looking around, seemingly looking for Rome. Ogvai distracted it with an illusion of Rome and Doug attacked, while Rome snuck backstage, climbed the catwalk, and started dropping lights onto it. Wounded by the party's magic, Rome jumped down from the catwalk, rapier pointed down into the nothic's skull, bringing some of the back curtain down with her.
Her blade finished off the nothic as she landed on top of it. Seizing the opportunity, Mathis had his crew fire off pyrotechnics and handed Rome her lute. As Rome launched into her big hit, Carnival Dreams, a song based on her childhood, the fleeing crowd turned back, seeing the danger was over, and the night was saved, sure to be one of the most memorable nights in the city for a long time.
