Session 15: New Connections
General Summary
After collecting their bounties, Doug and Rome were returning to Forest's Edge in Ma'Zar. Rome was distracted by a mastiff, belonging to Shadow, who had just entered town in pursuit of a mysterious summons, instructing him to look for a flame in the treetops. Rome and Doug entered the inn, bragging to all about their completion of the ogre bounty and catching the attention of Alden and Eirame, who had rode into town with a caravan and were drinking nearby.
Chiranni closely observed Shadow as he entered, sitting down with Rome and Doug as Rome bought drinks for everyone in the tavern. Correctly marking him as a rogue, Chirrani offered him some business, speaking in Thieves' Cant while she delivered the drinks to their table. Shadow followed her to the bar, where she informed him of a task that he might be able to complete. A few nights ago, J'Lanni had organized a militia and raided an Ebon Axes hideout, located in a cave in a base of Ma'Zar's southeast hill, facing the river. Most of the Axes' crew was taken prisoner, but all but two of them were assassinated by an unknown archer while being led to a holding cell. The two that survived were unwilling to name the perpetrator, believed to be the leader of the local Axes cell. Chirrani had good reason to believe the leader was Ro'Hisan, a textiles merchant and clothier who, Chirrani claimed, was faking an arm injury, wearing his arm in a sling to throw off the townsfolk while in actuality being perfectly healthy. Chirrani said that J'Lanni was paying a reward for proof of the leader's identify and his capture or death. She suggested Shadow take that on, getting some friends in case things got rough.
Shadow took Doug and Rome outside, telling them about the job. Eirame and Al left the inn as well, looking at the job board, and got invited to join the other three. The party decided to investigate the river cave, to see if anything was overlooked. They found a false bottom in a drawer on a table in the entrance room, but it had already been emptied. Following a passage to the right, they discovered a room with any empty crates; it too had been picked over, by the militia or by surviving Axe members. In another room off the entrance room, they found weapon and armor racks, again stripped clean, and a table that was used for cutting and repackaging kress. Al and Shadow discovered a door leading down a narrow passage. Following it, they emerged on the river bank, upstream from the original entrance. Detecting some footprints, they followed them to the northeast around the hill. Someone atop the northwest hill fired a shot that happened to hit Doug in the shoulderblade. A note was attached, reading "You would be wise to keep your noses out of others' business", with a black axe as a signature.
Continuing around the hill and reentering town from the southeast, the party took care of some business, returning to the inn to regroup at nightfall. Leaving at 2 AM, the party headed to Ro'Hisan's house and workshop, two trees connected by a wood and rope bridge, 12 feet off the ground. With some difficulty and noise, the party managed to climb up. Entering the workshop, they were attacked by a Tabaxi hiding behind the loom in the workshop. He quickly summoned another two, and the party entered battle.
