The dragon travelers that saved our material plane have been simply called the Travelers for time out of mind. They have, over the eons, stepped in to meddle in mortal affairs, but that faded away over time. In fact, they disappeared entirely. Until, that is, the impact. They managed, somehow, to save the Human species from extinction.
The impact of the asteroid could not have been better placed to destroy the humans. Indeed, ninety percent of the were either vaporized immediately, or died in the geological upheaval afterwards. The displaced water caused deadly tsunamis, and the force that created the one hundred and thirteen kilometer diameter crater also caused volcanoes to explode, earthquakes to rage, and fire to fall from the sky as the ejecta returned to Tellus as white hot molten rock. And the epicenter of it all was the precise point to do the most damage to Humanity.
