J. Stilton Journal, Vol. 3

The logbook and diary of Jeremy Stilton, the adventurer/cartographer that rediscovered the ancient city of Paxandar. Engaged by the King of the (then) city-state of Greynor, Stilton was paid a hefty sum in gold that turned out to be well worth it. It was he that first mapped most of the continent now known as Pax.
Retiring a wealthy man, he built an estate and small trading outpost to support it on a river delta far to the west, directly atop the ancient city. He held the place as sacred, and upon discovering Hamish's Crypts, he concealed the entrance inside a temple he commissioned Gnomish architects to build.
Oddly enough, he wound up marrying a Northwoman. I say oddly, because all signs point to Mr. Stilton being having died at the hands of the barbarous Northmen. Yet another strange thing about Mr. Stilton is that he took his lady wife's family name in her honor. It was unheard of at the time, so they simply hyphenated it to make it more palatable to the very old-fashioned folks of the frontier.
This preserved piece of ancient history is a collection of journal pages, bound together with a press and cotton twine. It is quite weathered, and the twine rotted away long ago, but one can just imagine it in its original glory! The pages themselves are made of sheepskin parchment; the ink is a collusion of lamp-black, soluble iron salts and vegetable-derived tannic acid, and soot. The writing is impressively rendered in a steady handed cursive of the High Old Style, and delightfully free form in it's derivation. There are some quite detailed maps, as you will see, and quite a few musings on the Manner of Things. Untrained people are unallowed to touch the work directly. Please ask a staff member if you would like a view of another page; we have copies for sale in the gift shop.
