Joshua Mendez

One of the only humans in the Altean Army alongside Erica and Damon, Joshua is a shaper of curious ability. He fights with a sabre and repeater pistol, infusing the former with maiga while peppering foes with the latter. He's a lighthearted man, jovial and upbeat to a fault. He is not without vice, however, and has problems reigning in his gambling tendencies and drinking habits.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Joshua is lean and athletic, training consistently to maintain his physique. He is swift for someone of his build.

Special abilities

• Joshua's shaping is odd in that he uses it to imbue himself with great speed. This speed is applied to his mind as well, letting him percieve the world in slow motion and to keep up with the nearly sonic speeds he is capable of. He likens managing the flow of maiga through his body while fighting to trying to fight while juggling. This "speedster" style of shaping is seemingly unique to him; others have attempted to copy the technique with limited success. It is theorized a god gave him this ability to aid Damon in his fight against the Diezens.
• Outside of enhancing his speed, Joshua uses maiga to form and manipulate ice, using it to lock foes up, create barriers, and make projectiles. His proficiency with other elements is severely lacking, however.
• Joshua is uncannily lucky. While this is something difficult to quantify, his gambling addiction stems from the thrill of winning as often as he does. Regardless of what his opponents may think, he is completely honest in his plays, never stooping to cheating.

Apparel & Accessories

He usually wears a red bandana around his head, letting his chest-length hair fall as it would naturally from under it. His teal pants and long sleeved button-up shirt have bits of armour layered on top, specifically leather pauldrons, along with a brigandine, forearm guards and greaves made of a light altanite alloy. A holster for his repeater pistol and a sheath for his saber sit on his right and left hip, respectively. A seperate pouch behind the holster holds gambling aids, typically a few dice and a fresh deck of cards. It also contains his favourite coin, a piece commissioned from Damon to have the Altean Army's insignia on one side and a depiction of Demmar on the other, cast in silver.

Accomplishments & Achievements

• He is one of Damon's human generals, a position only Erica and himself hold.
• Joshua is commonly attributed to saving a sizable number of lives during Diezen incursions between his speed, luck, and ability to shield others with his ice shaping.
• His stamina is immense, supporting extended use of his shaper powers, particularly his draining speed enhancement.

Failures & Embarrassments

• All of his luck and success does go to his head. Joshua will commonly showboat his talents whenever there's a crowd to show off for, even if it's in the middle of combat. This distraction sometimes costs him the opportunity to save others.
• His gambling tendencies are famous, his propensity for alchohol nearly as much so. There have been times he's been unable to deploy due to a drinking bender taken too far the night before.
• Bringing up the above points to him invariably have him get very defensive and difficult to speak with, let alone work with. This is something Damon puts up with with great, but tried, patience.
