Runed Prosthetics

Just like new! But better!

"And... There." The Crenian man gently slid the carved obsidian and metal arm onto what was left of his partner's limb. His partner, a young Kitainese man watched with fascination as he felt the new arm gently squeeze his elbow. It was snug for a moment before it seemed to settle. The Crenian man glanced up. "That was the 'hold' rune, it's not too tight?"   The Kitainese man shook his head. "No, Cerin. It feels fine..." He didn't try to move just yet, staring at the glossy black stone. "It'll be like Raphael's?" He asked, voice somewhat nervous.   Cerin glanced up, his glasses sliding down his nose a touch. He grimaced "It... It should be." He replied, looking unsure for the first time since he'd shown him the new arm. "Shiva helped me. I wanted to make sure it would work..."   The Kitainese man nodded, swallowing roughly. "What do we do, then?"   Cerin grinned, reaching up to trace the runes he'd carved into the arm. "Trace the runes, give them energy. The rest should figure itself out." He hoped.   Carefully, the Kitainese man reached up and traced the runes with his left hand. All at once, they sprung to life with a deep, red-orange light. The arm didn't feel heavy anymore. In fact... His eyes widened as he realized he could feel his leg beneath the arm. "Good Gods..."   "Nah, just me." Cerin grinned, earning himself a playful push.
Runed prosthetics are a technological marvel once thought to only be a far-off pipe dream. Through use of runic magic and various materials treated to accept it, the runesmiths of Creni have managed to create something incredible.

Discovery

A Crenian scientist experimenting with runes and treatment of various materials with divine magic (Essentia or one of its components), was shocked when she discovered that materials that had been pretreated with essentia and included the rune for "Alive" began to function autonomously. Crystal Constructs had already existed for many a year, so her discovery was at first limited in the excitement it drew.   It was when she approached a close friend who had lost a limb in a Husk attack that things began to click into place. Through many prototypes, failures and experiments, finally she was able to create a working, moving prosthetic leg. A leg that could feel and move just based on its owners thoughts. Overnight, she became a sensation, and her pet project was used to help the lives of many thousands of disabled mortals and Knights.

Access/Availability

Runed prosthetics are readily available, though the quality will suffer somewhat depending on price. Top of the line prosthetics have high costs, but feature runes for 'feeling' in addition to life-like movement and fine motor function. Lower tier prosthetics will be able to move, but those motions may be more crude than what their old limb was capable of.   The material the 'shell' of the prosthetic is made of may change depending on where it was manufactured. Some will pay handsomely for prosthetics that are particularly stylish, or made of a material known to be loved by one God or another.

Utility

These items are used by hundreds of thousands of Esseni and dragons who have lost one or more limbs. They replace the functions of the lost limb to varying degrees of success. Prosthetics made for Knights are the most impressive as they have to replace the function of abilities beyond those of normal esseni, in addition to standing up to high incidences of fighting.

Complexity
Runed prosthetics vary in complexity depending on their price range. All have the same general form that closely resembles flesh and blood limbs.

I find prosthetics to be fascinating. I ALSO find runes to be fascinating. I swear, this article was made specifically for me to find it fascinating!   The images are exceedingly well done. I really enjoy the image on the sidebar, showing off the different runes! I'd be very interested to see an expansion on that, showing different combinations of runes, and maybe the different results brought out because of it!

Haha, thank you!! :D I'm really glad!   I had a lot of fun with the runes and the prosthetic itself! I do plan on making a full article on Runes and Runic Magic at some point in the future, probably once Summer Camp is over! I already have a bunch drawn out and everything!

I'll have to keep an eye out for that! It sounds super interesting, and I'd love to see where you take this idea.
