Zardula Character in Tarien | World Anvil

Zardula

The Reaper of Bones

Zardalu (Czar-Dahl-oo) is among the eldest of the gods of Tarien , second only to Chetria. He is a patient god, rarely dabbling in the affairs of men . . . after all, all men come to him in time. He appears to his followers as a decaying corpse, resplendent in rotting king’s regalia.

History/Relationships

Zardalu holds a deep hatred for Anderi, the only god more powerful than himself, and for Legerdemain, the only mortal ever to escape his grasp.

Dogma

The sight of a priest of Zardalu often brings fear to the general populace. It is believed that with them, death always follows. However, their belief and behavior is misunderstood. Zardalu’s priesthood understands that death is merely a part of the cycle of life. They recognize the sleep which lasts for eternity as opposed to the brief waking moment of life. They see it as their duty to escort the recently deceased upon their path, and to bring understanding to those that remain behind. Some sects of the priesthood actively seek to appease their lord by bringing death to those who’s lives are near an end, while others see it as their duty to comfort those left behind by a deceased beloved one.

Church/Priesthood

His priesthood often congregates on battlefields to help the mortally wounded and deceased on their journey.

Priests of Zardalu always wear long, thick, purple or black robes, even over their armor. Over the robes they wear a thick cowl, with a veil covering the face. Some priests wield battle scythes in combat the scythe is roughly the size of a battle axe, and is carried openly. Priests who carry these scythes gain the honorary title 'finger of death'.
