Temple of Dead Souls
With a black dome that reaches only two stories above the patchwork streets of central Sarnyan, the central church for Zardula seems foreboding, but not particularly impressive. Two life-sized statues - one of a priestess in thick robe and another of a black knight, perhaps a Hand of Zardula, flank the heavy iron door that is the only break in the dome. Once inside, supplicants enter a small hallway with stairs that curiously lead down. Doubling back several times, the stairs descend into the depths of the crypts below the dome. Emerging from the stairs, supplicants enter a grand hall, its domed ceiling reaching over fifty feet into the air. it is here that the black masses for Zardula are performed. A dozen tunnels spiral out of the hallway, each guarded by a grotesque carving, the heads of demons and devils from legend. Where the tunnels lead, none but the most fervent of Zardula's faithul know for sure, but rumors of crypts and catacombs that descend deeper and spiral out beneath the entire city are likely to be true as those that pass by the domed cathedral in the dead of night swear they can hear the cries of the departed.
