Ulf Black Tongue Character in Tarien | World Anvil

Ulf Black Tongue

Spirit Seeker

Slight of frame and what one might call bookish, if the Tribe of the Winter Wolf had such things, Ulf is the unlikely mate to the tribe's alpha hunter- Reyna. Named during his eighth winter when Ulf fell victim to a wasting disease that ravaged the tribe. Though Ulf's mouth eventually recovered, the plague left over two dozen dead, and blackening the tongues and gums of its victims. He would never grow as tall and broad as the other men of his tribe and even today his leather shirt hangs loosely over his slight frame. A strong spring breeze has, in fact, knocked him over.

None of the deficiencies, however, have kept him silent. Instead of cowering from his betters as a boy, Ulf has used his sharp to tongue to first antagonize and then bewilder those larger children that might otherwise have bullied him. When he manifested a talent for woodcraft and spirit talking in his twelfth winter, the tribe's old Spirit Seeker took him under her wing, teaching him all that she could before passing into the next life just as Ulf came into manhood.

He wooed Reyna a winter after assuming the roll of Spirit Seeker and has served as her voice ever sense. Speaking enough for both of them, hunters and children alike have noted wryly that it is often difficult to discern Ulf's proclamations for the Alpha, the words of the spirits, and the drivel he eschews as "theories."

Scrawny for a human and puny for a member of the Tribe of the White Wolf, Ulf is both mate to Reyna - the tribe's alpha - and its Spirit Seeker. He talks incessantly, using his wit to both insult and bewilder the rest of the tribe in between proclamations from Reyna and the Spirits.
