Tiras' Gates Item in Tarien | World Anvil

Tiras' Gates

Scattered throughout Tarien, these magical portals appear and disappear seemingly at random in remote locations throughout the confinement. Stepping through one takes a person to another gate, often hundreds if not thousands of leagues distant. In centuries past, when these sort of phenomenon were studied by the likes of the School of Pure and Applied Thaumaturgy at the University of Karradone, magi had begun to catalogue their appearance and myriad destinations. Theorems abounded. From the research that remains it appears that these gates appear and disappear based upon the phases of Verdun and Mora. It is unclear what governs destinations, though many have speculated that that the angle of ascension for each moon governs the destination of a traveler. This theory, however was never proven, as many a magi entered a gate, expecting a particular destination only to find themself disappointed.

The lunar cycle of the gates led many to ascribe them to Tiras, though magi from the University swear that their research precludes a divine origin. Still, the gate seem to function, despite the Translocation Ban which adds credence to this popular belief. Given the trust in the arcane that has come about since the Mage Wars, there are plenty of those that prefer to believe they are governed by the dark goddess than some sort of arcane power.

With the arcane enmity that surfaced after the Mage Wars, little further research has been conducted and what was conducted before has generally been lost. As such, little is known about specific gates and their destinations. What follows below is a very incomprehensive list.
