Translocation Ban Physical / Metaphysical Law in Tarien | World Anvil

Translocation Ban

Simply put, the Translocation Ban means that magic cannot be used to transport creatures or objects from one place to another without physically travelling distance. Practically, this has two key effects. First, magi cannot teleport themselves or others from place-to-place. This change effectively made Tarien a much larger, more isolated world. Given the proliferation of magical transportation, particularly in the years leading up to the Great War, had created a window of exposure to goods and ideals from many lands. Since the Miracle of Rebirth, the hunger for these goods and ideas has persisted, making organizations that empower their transportation, such as Merchant's and Mercenaries' Guilds both wealthy and powerful on an international scale.

Secondly, magi cannot summon extra-planar creatures into Tarien and bind them into service. Creatures native to Tarien can still be summoned, but those that would result in extra-planar servants inevitably fail. Scholars postulate that this stricture was the most important in ending the war, as it prevented the Elynthi from simply re-summoning their allies. Over the centuries since its invocation, this stricture has also necessitated a change in Nosferian's Church, moving much worship and practice aware from direct summoning to communing with the Nosferian’s demons. While there have been rumors that some powerful Elynthi priests have managed to summon demons for short periods of time, they have not been substantiated.

Note that it is unknown whether or not this ban prevents magi from leaving Tarien via arcane means. It does, however, mean that once they have left, it is impossible to return. As such, no one has been able to test the theory. Several archmagi vanished, often in dramatic fashion, after the Miracle of Rebirth, leading scholars to believe that they abandoned Tarien for other, less arcane-restrictive, homes.
