Dark Mountain

Known as Tûrakh-Neshel or “The Mountain That Holds Its Breath” in Kari-Zaro, Dark Mountain is is an extinct volcanic peak rising from the Brinton Ridge just beyond the village of Pensicoit, distinguished by a perpetual mantle of dark cloud that clings to its upper slopes. Though the mountain has shown no volcanic activity within recorded history, it continues to vent cold, mineral-laden gases through fissures near its summit. These vapors, heavier than the surrounding air, rise slowly and mingle with the dense moisture drawn upward from the Jungles of Thallox below. Where warm, life-heavy jungle air meets the lifeless stone of the upper mountain, condensation occurs almost instantly, forming a thick, light-devouring cloud that rarely lifts, even in strong winds.

The Kari-Zaro understand this phenomenon as a boundary made visible. Below the cloud line, the forest breathes freely — leaves transpire, water moves, and sound carries. Above it, stone dominates, and the air grows dull and heavy, muffling noise and swallowing light. Birds avoid the summit, and animals refuse its paths, retreating long before the ground turns bare. To the Kari-Zaro, Tûrakh-Neshel is not cursed, nor sacred in the ritual sense, but respected as a place where the land exhales what it no longer needs. Elders warn that lingering near the cloud dulls the senses and shortens memory, and so the mountain is watched, named, and left alone — its breath unchallenged.
