Waston Organization in Tariek Rough Collection | World Anvil

Waston

On the southern edge of Valerick, deep in the thickest jungles is the nation of Waston. This land is a strange and wonderful place, for hidden amongst the wilds of this rainforest are perhaps the most inventive and creative folk of Valerick. The gnomes. Gnomish science is wild, dangerous, but also in its own ways genius. It was gnomish experimentation that founded the first firearms, and it has become something of their peoples' pride and joy. But they are tinkerers, always seeking to improve upon their designs. This nation, hidden amongst the leafy rainforest, hides towns and cities of promise, science, magic and invention.
(Flag Concept: Experimental gun, vine wrapped.)

Structure

The gnomes hold knowledge and science in high regard, and they seek only the most experienced and sharpest minds to lead them. In this current day and age, that mind is High Magister Jeremiah Sunam, the gnome responsible for the invention of the pepperbox cartridge and the first motorized machinery, carts and wagons that move about his nation's capital of Rydan without need for horse or oxen, just coal and a person to keep feeding it.
Like any good scientific and logical people, everything is done in collaboration. The major political decisions are made by a council of the greatest minds of the nation, along with their advisers.

Public Agenda

To continue the technological advancement of their nation, the continent, and to be ready next time the Black Mists return.

Assets

Technology and knowledge, along with various strange and valuable pieces of equipment. Lumber, various goods from the sea. Waston's navy numbers 400 or so vessels. The cities here are technological marvels as well.

History

Waston was one of the later nations returned to the fold, for the gnomish people whom called the jungles home refused to commit to such a march until they'd finished developing firearms, en masse too boot. But the day finally came. The war was pitched, bloody and filthy, dragging out for nearly two years. Every inch of Waston was an entrenched hell, a battlefield hungry for the dead and dying. But the people persevered, and finally, 2 years after the first shots were fired, that goal was accomplished.

Military

The best guess places Waston's potential army at 35000-45000 but none can get a better range than that. Well trained, favoring firearms, cannon and more...modernized war fare. Masters of siege war fare and siege works.
Their intelligence organization a group called the Huntmasters, and are excellent at their job, masters of deception and information retrieval.
The elite force of this army are simply called the Musketeers. These troops are masters in rapier, and the new pepperbox pistol and rifle,

Technological Level

Late Renaissance-1700s

Religion

As in all nations, worship of any of the nine heroes of the Draconic Wars is fully accepted here. The favored god of the inhabitants of Waston however, fits, is Cormaq Thunderhand. His legends tell us that he joined the fight in the Draconic Wars for glory, and for the chance to test his latest ideas and inventions, seeking immortality through the stories to be told of him later and finding it. This is the key tenet and ideal of his faith. Seek that immortality, the only true immortality. Immortality through how history remembers you, how history writes you.

Foreign Relations

Waston is a strange nation, in that they have trade arrangements with everyone, but are very secretive and aren't massively open with anyone. All firearms are made here, their crafting perhaps one of the best kept gnomish secrets, something that is only just finally being shared for the first generation of firearms (black powder/flintlock) even though strange pepperbox and revolving cartridge weapons are starting to appear. The gnomes of Waston like to keep their monopoly, and like to keep a proper advantage over their foes

Agriculture & Industry

This area is not a well understood area of Waston. They import food and bits of everything, but also export similar foods and other materials as well. The biggest industry is hidden, a secret. Their technology. Firearms are the hefty meat of their nations export and therefore economy. But other pieces, bits here and there, slip out, seemingly 'accidentally', and sell for a massive price. But it always traces back to a known operative for the Waston's government. This fact leads many to believe that this is definitely no accident

Trade & Transport

The road systems here are almost all coastal, and limited to a degree, most of the inland jungle not explored by any roads, indeed, not explored at all. Most travel and trade that does come in and out does so by sea

Education

Not much is known about how this nation handles education either, but they produce the most well educated, logical, scientific, but wildly and willingly experimentally mindsets in their citizens.

Infrastructure

Their cities and towns are the window into their world, places of marvelous innovation. Steam powered carriages, structures that are of strange, seemingly implausible architecture.

Welcome to the Jungle!
