Kang-Chorath

This marshy, swamp covered land, running thick with all manner of river and and riverboat trade and economy, is the nation of Kang-Chorath. Though not as heavily populated as many of the other countries of Valerick, many do choose to try and find a life here. But its a dangerous place and life, the swamps posing an ever real threat. But yet many do find a life here successfully. They are also a haven, a shipping point of importance, almost all goods that are shipping south from the northern lands of Rohara and Raechin pass through their waters and cities, and vice versa.

Structure

Kang-Chorath oddly is the traditional home of the halflings, and this nation runs different than most nations on Valerick. Whilst most of the other countries do have a monarch type who, whilst not holding all the power, does indeed have the ability to wield it all if they so choose, or in times of crisis. Kang-Chorath differs in that it doesn't allow for this. Indeed, it is, even moreso than Deepwood, more of a union of states, each county fully independent of each other. And there have been cases of one county going to war with another in the nation's two hundred and fifty year history. Three times in fact. Most without proper understanding of the how this country is politically structured would call these 'civil wars'. But her inhabitants would ferociously deny this.
As to the council of Nations, they rotate. Every ten years, they rotate where the representative is from, one serving from every county in a cycle. As such they don't have one ruler so much as a council of elected representatives, diplomats for their internal state of affairs, six of them to be exact.
Those six at this time are: Lord Tenzia Sylvanus of Haramir, Baroness Seriaph Calvant of Southridge, MInister Erik Sorvan of Sandgate, Duke Borvas Cull of Suvant, Lord Connor Evans of Hillgate and High Captain Roxy Telvan of Whitefjord.

Public Agenda

To maintain their rather...odd and chaotic way of life, and to protect themselves and from the Black Mists

Assets

This marshland nation is home to all manner of odd herb and alchemical ingredient not found anywhere else, which makes them valuable. The sea and her bounty are also another asset that is made full use of by this country. They've a navy of over two hundred vessels, and are well versed in coastal sailing as well as river and marsh navigation.
Their cities and towns, unlike the more northern nations, aren't fortresses, but they are designed sensibly, buildings getting taller towards the center, the larger ones have walls and other such security, but they aren't built with that sole purpose in mind. Indeed most towns and such in this nation were built as trade hubs and as resting havens, midpoints for travel. Places to get a rest, resupply and get your bearings again before continuing on your way.

History

This nation was and has always been a bit of a mess. But the halflings are a stubborn lot, if nothing else. So it came as little surprise to most that they managed to all work together and take back their marshy, swampy homeland in 925. It was a long, hard, ugly campaign to push out the daemonic entities that were still there, and purify the land as best as one could. Not much is known, truthfully, about this march, for not much was shared with the outside world. Like every nation however, there are still little...areas, locations that reek of Abyssal Taint. Areas where the Black Mist hides, waits, and occasionally shows itself.
This nation is also strange as it has become the traditional home of the twisted, also known as Tieflings. Whilst many have some (unfounded) superstitious belief that these poor souls twisted appearance is because they are of the Abyss, or of Daemonic origin, citizens of Kang-Chorath for the most part see beyond that. They see people whom were horribly maimed and changed against their will by the crisis of the Sundering. The Empress herself has sanctified their right to exist, stating emphatically they are not in any way a thing of the Abyss. They were also a vital and key ally in the campaign to recover the nation, fighting shoulder to shoulder, metaphorically of course due to height difference, with the halflings. This has endured a cultural respect.

Military

Kang-Chorath's as a nation is...well difficult to navigate given it is more like a loosely tied association of six nations that are all equals. This also means it isn't...easy to broadly paint a picture of their military structure. But estimates put the potential numbers that could be fielded around forty thousand.
But one key part that does stand above the multiple cultural divides are The Ears. This is the name for the intelligence organization of Kang Chorath. Another is their elite troops, of which there are only a thousand. The Children of the Swamp, as they are known. Powerful druids whom live as defenders of the land and for a higher purpose and separate from any internal squabbles.

Religion

Again, the nine heroes of lore, those whom ascended during the times of the Draconic Wars, they may all be worshipped. But here is where things become....odd. Some claim that tieflings, though they were better at hiding it, have always existed, indeed one, the least worshipped hero, was amongst the nine, fighting in the Draconic Wars. None can no for sure, of course, but this is a controversy and though worship of all nine is legal, that one in particular, is viewed with....careful consideration. In most places.
Deat-Ka, the tiefling, the dancer of dreams and shadows, is the hero favored here, oddly so. Many wonder why this is, but some think it is obvious. The halfling lands had been the secret home of the twisted all this time. Whatever the case, despite the apprehension felt about tieflings, one indeed sits in Valerick's Pantheon. He preaches seeking true eternal fulfillment and life, but to turn away from methods Daemonic or undead. Indeed those forces upset the balance of life and death and must be purged with extreme prejudice. An odd philosophy but one embraced by much of the citizenry.
The Hall of Shadows, his cathedral is tucked away, within Haramir, a large, simple building, a place of rest and dreaming.

Foreign Relations

Kang-Chorath is a strange nation. Though allied willingly with all her neighbors, she also stands somewhat separate, not entering into any of the larger agreements, such as the Northern Prosperity Agreement, or the Heartland Defense Pact, or any others that exist

Agriculture & Industry

Though the land is marshy and waterlogged, some crops thrive here. Rices, various fruits, all manner of edible marine foliage are all farmed en masse in some areas. The sea also provides a bounty, including the whaling industry, which is a heavy producer of oil.

Trade & Transport

Most transportation is done via rivers and the sea, but one major road, one maintained in a unspoken and unnamed alliance amongst all three eastern counties, is the Central Coast Highway. This runs all the way up the coastline
Oil, various odd agricultural goods, and other bounties of the sea are the most common items of export, along with whalebone carvings, luxury pieces that fetch a high price at many markets throughout Valerick. All manner of goods are traded for, from firearms to metal to lumber and everything in between.

Education

Much like Rohara, Kang-Chorath uses a public education system heavily, though it is less...well organized. Many non halflings choose to educate their own due to the wildly varied structure of this system.

Infrastructure

This nation is built much differently than many others, due to the terrain. There are no true needs for aqueducts, as its a swamp. One simply collects water from the swamp land around their house, skims any plant matter off, boil it, and viola. fresh, drinkable water. Sewage is slightly more of a problem, most dwellings are built with places to bury or burn such things to dispose of them. The way towns are built is a simple, but ingenious construction of wooden walkways and legs and platforms for buildings to sit atop. Such construction is difficult and dangerous, as one must work directly in the swamp, and all manner of creature calls those waters home.
