Govari Barony

Within the Howling Peaks, sticking to the river valleys, careful expansion has occurred, lead by the Govari clan, a dwarven clan known even among their own race for their skill and raw talent at mining, tunneling and subterranean navigation. Within these lands of course, the dangers are ever present, and it is but a relatively thin vein and route, that is following the waterways, that is settled. Greenskins, Joten, filthy Yetis and worse are common. Raids are a regular threat to communities here. These people live a hard life, but those whom survive can find their way and great fortune. These mountains are mineral rich, the timber here strong and plentiful. Hardy men and women with skill and a proper chip on their shoulders can find great success here. Some twenty-two thousand tax paying citizens of Suranth, and their children of course, call this region home.

Geography

CITIES AND TOWNS:

Irambegmam (8561): This settlement, named in the dwarven tongue (pronounced Erum-vig-myam) is more or less literally translated to 'Granite-Hole-City' or, as most men call it, Stoneburg. The large town is named for the large and busy granite quarry that employs (directly and indirectly combined) some two thousand of the town's citizens. This is also the principal settlement and seat of power for the Govari Clan. The city is always busy, and lately things have been more busy and wild than usual. The stone-cutters guild, whom are the ones who literally pull the stone from the quarry, are on strike. Full stop, production has shut down, and has been that way for about two weeks. The three mining interests involved in the massive quarry, each laying claim to one third of the proposed area, have been...upset. A few days previous they tried bringing in unskilled workers and getting them to cut stone. Teaching them, and well, this did not go well. Riots ensued, attacks on the businesses, forcing these fool people to give up those jobs. Now back in a stalemate, things seemed to maybe be calming down. The union heads and the mining bosses were finally meeting. Talks were ongoing....until but two days ago...when a murder victim was discovered.

Stonebanks (4509): This busy port town gets its name of course, for being the shipping point for the granite from the quarries in the region, and this boatyard is one of the busiest river dockyards in all of Suranth. Normally of course. But the last two weeks saw a slowdown, and now layoffs, with the Stonecutters Guild strike in Irambegmam. Now news is trickling in that there was an incident, halting talks....and that the strike looks likely to last a long time. This news of course, has seen responses of a poor nature as the various dock workers...react....to layoffs and the loss of their incomes and ability to support their families. Crime is on the rise already and it will likely get worse.

Millbank (2877): This small industrious town gets its name for the various mills that operate along the river bank, making paper, cutting stone into bricks and blocks, grinding imported grains into flour, cutting logs into timber. Lately some of the millers have been struggling, of course, with the slowdown and now complete freeze in granite shipping. No one really knows much, last they heard was a strike, but both parties were in negotiations. But concern is rising, naturally.
