Fiona Annabelle Symons {AKA Gilly Ghel} Character in Tariek Rough Collection | World Anvil

Fiona Annabelle Symons {AKA Gilly Ghel}

Miss Fiona Annabelle Symons (a.k.a. Gilly Ghel)

"Too long have you been treated like second class citizens, too long have you been treated as lesser, as disposable, as mere tools and equipment, not people! Too many have been left crippled, too many grieving widows and children, too many! I know some here may not work the plants, some may have, or perhaps once had, family, lovers, or dear friends whom worked in them, and died due to the sheer atrocious working conditions. I too did. I lost a man three months ago in that terrible fire whom....I owe everything. A man whom was not my lover, but my brother in spirit, and soon my brother to be. A young man with so much promise, whom introduced me to the man that I will be blessed to marry. I remember it like it was yesterday, though it was almost eighteen months ago. I also remember the night before he died....we were planning the wedding, and Mikael was to be my husband's best man, as one might expect. Many of you in this crowd are treated abhorrantly. Many others here have suffered devastating losses because of the systemic treatment of those whom do this vital work. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!"
The woman known as 'Gilly Ghel', one Fiona Annabelle Symons.

At age twenty-one, born into a very wealthy family, this is the woman whom has become a folk hero of sorts, despite what those she champions for could perhaps see as a dark past, or one that at the very least is a conflict of interest. She is the daughter of one Voltaire Symons, the same Ghel magnate who's factory burned down three months ago, killing and maiming some forty odd workers. The fire was caused by sheer negligence in the care and upkeep of the facility, but Voltaire, using his money and influence, has blamed the workers, and avoided paying out any sort of compensation. Without a Guild, or indeed the necessary legal recognition to formally be recognized and organize as such, the Ghel-men as a whole have no defense. Or so it would have seemed to many. But in the months since, an unlikely hero stepped forward. Fiona, whom lost the man who would have been her brother in law in the incident. She knows the truth of it now, and always knew, though she'd wanted to believe her father hadn't let things get so dire. Like many she'd spent a long time assuming the conditions were exaggerated. But over the last two years since meeting Mikael she's been championing the cause with her father, causing 'difficulties' to say the least. Family only stretches so far, however, and since this incident, Fiona has seemingly gone silent, much to Voltaire's relief, since he has a new headache, this 'Gilly Ghel', figure whom is organizing the Ghel-men and creating true progress and order, pushing the political agenda of unionization into the limelight. Something Voltaire means to stop by any means necessary.

Personal history

Growing up the daughter of a Ghel Magnate, she lived much of her life unaware of the dark truths of the industry, living off exploitation of their labor, the labor of the poor, worked to death, the labor of children, even in breach of several lawsm ignored because of the deep need for Ghel and the products it was used to produce across Suranth. For many years she grew up an unaware noble woman, with a good heart, but no true understanding of the truths of the world. That all changed however, when she fell in love. You see her father was of a 'new' enough school of thought that though he would not let her marry someone he didn't approve of, she was not property. That concept was seen as archaic and crude. She was allowed, encouraged even, to seek her own suitors. And though a step down the social ladder, her father had no issue with her becoming involved with, and then engaged to, an officer of the law.

Of course this was because Voltaire was not and still is not aware of whom the lawman's brother, the young friend Fiona spoke highly about, whom had introduced her to her husband to be, truly was. Mikael Grunston, the younger brother of Alexei Grunston, was a Ghel-man. She learned much and though she believed Mikael in the broad strokes, and did start pushing her father for change, to no avail, she truly could not believe her father had let it get so bad.

Then came the tragedy. Months before her and Alexei's nuptials were supposed to occur, Mikael slated to be his brother's best man, of course. High spirits, joy and hope were taken in a swift moment of great tragedy, and the wedding pushed aside, postponed until further notice to 'grieve.' The incident in question? The Whale Point Grease Fire. over thirty dead including Mikael, from depraved indifference and what could only be described as criminal neglect of the factory's necessary mechanical parts, by all accounts.

All accounts except her father's and their massive PR budget. Instead they blamed a 'lazy, foolish worker' for 'lighting a smoke and accidentally dropping it into a vat of the highly flammable boiling oil.' Fiona was distraught and furious, Alexei obsessive and angry. Together, they supported each other, and decided upon courses of action. Fiona stopped pushing her father, indeed she began to play the 'doting daughter' when at home again, much to her disgust. But she only was home perhaps once a week now, dutiful visits from a 'loving daughter' whom had moved in with her husband to be to 'support and comfort his grieving soul.' Like a dutiful wife or wife to be should.

However they were not idle and were not grieving. Alexei is working non-stop, trying to find a way to bring Voltaire down legally, whilst supporting the growing movement for Ghel-men Guild Recognition. The movement was growing with great speed over the last three months under the mysterious, or not so mysterious to Alexei and by some of the Ghel-men that could be trusted with such a necessary secret, leadership and motivation of one Gilly Ghel.

Alexei and the trusted members of the movement's leadership know the truth. Gilly is Fiona. Fiona is Gilly. They are the same. Her past is kept a close circle secret however, only vague notes of it used without giving away any family names of anyone involved. This is not for any fear of reprisal or the members of the movement turning the other cheek, but it is to weaponize it. It is to use this identity as a weapon at the right and most opportunistic and beneficial moment. Alexei understands full well what his wife (yes they married quietly, so if the worse were to happen, Fiona would not die without having at least marrying and consumating with the man she loves) is doing, and the position she's putting herself in and supports her, even knowing the danger of it. She could die, and that is no exaggeration.

Mental Trauma

The loss of Mikael, a young man of only eighteen years she saw as a younger brother and trusted confidante, her best friend whom was not her husband-to-be has left her deeply traumatized. Her response to her trauma however has been one that may at some point become very dangerous. She has become a true believer. Over the last three months, she has become 'Gilly Ghel', a voice, a revolutionary, a public agitator. She basically 'forced' her husband to teach her to shoot, and carries a pistol at all times. She learned her way around some basics of combat, training with Alexei, so she carries a blackjack or sap, similiar to a policeman's truncheon in size and shape. She has not become morose or depressed, but instead become a bit of a an extremist, a bit of a zealot. A 'true believer'. Totally and wholly dedicated to the cause, fearless in the face of the police or worse, totally unafraid of the idea of death or imprisonment. She has dirtied her hair with grease, had her husband cut it poorly, and purposely does her face with coal dust smudges and other substances as 'make-up, which is enough to hide her identity, but naturally as is eventually planned, enough that if she were to wipe her face off and run water through her hair, even with the poor cut, it will quickly become undeniable to know whom she actually is, to insure she will be ready to reveal herself if the opportune moment arrives suddenly.

Intellectual Characteristics

She is very smart, well educated in numbers, business, history, and linguistics.

Morality & Philosophy

She is obviously extremely liberal for the time, indeed one could argue extremely liberal in general. She bucks tradition, is disgusted by the wealthy and hates her heritage. She intends to publically disown her father when she can finally force him to meet with Gilly Ghel in public, that is her hope and plan for the big reveal. She has no name for what she believes, for this morality or philosophy, indeed she doesn't see it that way, as none before here organizing similar movements did. She is just angry. She saw a great injustice done, felt it upon her own life in a horrible and tragic way, and has simply had enough.

Gilly Ghel is truly an interesting character. Suffering losses first-hand and not breaking by the situation. But adjusting her whole life living it in secret to have an edge over her dad to bring him down (if I understood it correctly).   I really like your slightly old-fashioned style of writing, immersive but partly (at least for non-native me) difficult to follow. ^^‘

It is purposely vague as well so likely not just you. The reason for that is also I'm doing my prompts in that style mostly (about 80% of them) with their direct usage in a TTRPG game in mind so I want to fulfill the prompt without exposing all the goodies as it were. You do understand correctly indeed. Gilly is meant to be a Plot NPC/Antagonist depending which side of the movement a Party were to side with in a given campaign/adventure module. Or a potential pre-gen character that is playable as well, depending how a GM wanted to run the scenario more casually for a new group or a group just wanting to pick up and play, as I'm intending to make 'Pathfinder-esque' adventure modules and paths for my material as I refine it later. My current writing style is very chaotic, it is not just you, I promise and likely has less to do with being non-native speaker than it does my...mad scientist 'welcome to my digital laboratory of chaos and madness' approach to my writing at current. After Summer Camp I'm taking a year off expanding my world any further, Tariek will be the rough name and this world is for rough material. I intend to start a new world that is the more....cleaned up, edited and groomed version, given its proper name (Valerick) and take the year to proof-read, edit, tidy, and CSS (hopefully)/beautify my work on the first nation I've got ready. Set it out more coherently, better organized and easier to follow, basically creating what will be the final template for setting guides for each country and its regions. The goal from this summer camp material in that next year is to include two 'Campaign modules' within that country's setting guide, offering a loose template that I'm hoping to make system agnostic in much of its descriptive material, whilst still offering a set up stat set for the game system I prefer to use which is Warhammer Fantasy. Basically noting 'this is how I ran it for the game rules and system of play I prefer, but my material and writing is meant to be system agnostic. You are a GM, get creative, and decide how you feel best to represent the material and lore in rules for whatever system you prefer. There are no wrong answers here, only unique interpretations."   Big goals, but I like to set my bars high lol.   So I thank you :) and am glad you found her interesting! But worry not, it is not just you. I will admit, it is me and my drafting/first version writing style. The madness is apparent even to me, whom is a native speaker of English. xD
