Bonaventure Verseweaver (Bon Vee)
Beuford Forrest Winchuck
This is Bon Vee's complete edited backstory:
Bonaventure Verseweaver (Bon Vee)
Beuford Winchuck, born to halfling parents, Gurtrude and Fredrick Winchuck, wandered off, with a great curiosity, at age 5, into the forest, until he found a village of wood elves. Highly intelligent and self-sufficient, he managed to keep a low profile and stay fed for about a month. Convincing inquisitive elves periodically that his parents were right around the corner, he decided he would be much better off, protected by a home. Getting to know the village, in that month, he picked out a couple who seemed to have their lives together. They were open minded and had one of the largest hovels in the village. They were also located right next to one of the entrances to the largest underground library known (or unknown) to the rest of the world.
The underground structure was only known as the Imperial Library, but as he read, over time, Beuford knew it was not the original Imperial Library. The original was in another world. The elves took pride in knowledge and intel, and took even more pride in being able to make a contribution to their underground gem. There were teams called "truth-seekers" that set forth on adventures. Their sole purpose was to deposit large quantities of new knowledge into the library. The teams were specialized to focus on political intel, technological intel, magical intel, biological intel, etc.
Beuford, uncannily intelligent, was fascinated by the structure of the system and was addicted to knowledge. When he decided to take on a home, he knocked on the door of Arun and Sithah Oakenrock. Gifted with a silver tongue, he was able to convince them to take him in and that he was an orphan named Bonaventure Verseweaver (because who wants to be called Beuford?). This wasn't hard to do, since they had seen him wandering the town periodically and had their suspicions he was abandoned.
It didn't take long for the Oakenrocks to see that Bonaventure was highly intelligent and extremely self-sufficient. Bon Vee (as he called himself, because who wants to be called Bonaventure?) wanted to spend most of his time at the library, and the Oakenrocks didn't get in his way. He quickly recognized that these people would continue to provide him with food and shelter, in exchange for a few systematic chores and a feigned sense of love and appreciation. It wasn't that Bon Vee didn't feel emotions of love and appreciation, but knowing how the chemicals in the mind work and that they are fabricated by the mind itself, it felt more like feigning than feeling.
Bon Vee, is a Bard of sorts. He values freedom and refuses to be part of any group. He will always say and do what gets him where he needs to be. He will not, however, be loyal to a party for the sake of loyalty. Not extremely musical in a talent sense, Bon Vee is intellectually capable of mastering any subject he hyper fixates upon. Mystery and adventure are his current fixations and boy did he stumble upon an intriguing group. One day he was returning with a group of “truth-seekers”. As they were speeding through the forest on a crisp fall day, they passed a scene that was imbedded in his mind.
Everything was embedded in Bon Vee’s mind. Gifted as a memorabillis (in today's time we would say he had a photographic memory), he noted every detail of that day and things just didn't add up. The carriage with a horse short. The overweight Elven man, the blood stains in the gravel road and much more.
Bon Vee is glaringly aware of, and equally confident of his unmatched intelligence, and is not one to follow rules of others, including his adopeted parents. In fact, he is so aware of his own intelligence, that he recognizes the arrogance that could be portrayed and has developed quite a charismatic personality. He, in fact, is a wordsmith. A jack of all trades, indeed, but none of his abilities are as strong as his poetic allure . . . especially when he's breaking the rules.
On that day, that crisp autumn day with that peculiar carriage of miscreants, he did not return home. He left without warning or regret, as he knew, when he eventually returned, he could erase his foster parents' anguish and worry with precise poetic explanation. He followed the intriguing crew for months and is now contemplating revealing himself, now that he's figured them out. Bon Vee watched the crew carefully and was fascinated by their freedom of adventuring. They were indebted to no one, only the thrill of adventure and their strange concepts of right and wrong. Over the years Bon Vee learned tricks to infiltrate “truth-seeker” missions. He decided he was going to infiltrate this group until he thoroughly comprehended their purpose.
Bon Vee followed the party into the city of Warshaw. He watched the crew slip into a local magic shop, then tucked into it himself, after they left. Bon Vee was a master of hypnosis and he lulled the shop keep to sleep. He didn’t have much time and this guy didn’t seem to label much. Bon Vee knew potions from books he’s read, but it was nearly impossible to decipher this alchemist’s system for sorting things. He did recognize one potion that he needed, but couldn’t find a poison that would completely do away with one of the crew members. The shop keep was starting to come to and he had run out of time. Bon Vee made his way toward the door and saw a box on the counter. On the way out, he dug his hand deep in the box and grabbed the first thing he touched, (a rock? A chain?) then bolted out of there to catch a visual of the group he’d been stalking.
Later that night Bon Vee checked the door handles of each of the adventurers’ rooms. The only one that seemed to be unlocked was the fat one, the one they called Crashe. Not his first choice, but not impossible. He crept up to the snoring slob. He looked at the rock on the chain he grabbed from the mystery box in the magic shop. “Perfect!” It glowed with a faint turquoise hew. He jammed the point of the glowing gem into the throat of Crashe. Crashe’s eyes opened wide in shock, but his throat wouldn’t let him so much as squeak. Aside from the pointy thing in his neck, there seemed to be tiny fingers grabbing at his prosthetic eyeball.
Crashe, who passed out in his armor and weapons next to him on his bed earlier that night, was able to grab at his weapons and make an attempt to thwart this tiny attacker. But it was too late. In a split second, Crashe disappeared into a faint misty vapor. Bon Vee was sure Crashe was now nothing but dust particles in the air. He slipped the chain of the amulet around his neck and waited to meet up with the rest of the party for the meeting at the Broken Tower. Bon Vee thought to himself, “Well that when better than planned! And I got myself a little token as well.” In the palm of Bon Vee’s hand was a marble. A marble? An eye. A red eyed marble. As he rolled it in his hand, he thought he caught a quick glint of light. Curious little thing. He put it in his pocket and waited in the room until morning.
