Ashe C2 Episode 25 - The Road to Warshaw
Previously On...
Finally defeating Ionn Castaliogne in the depths of Castaliogne manor you once more recovered the arcane focus. Looking through his many documents and plans you found evidence proving that the man was one of the Fallen, Lord Vedemire Dark Horse. In cells found under the manor you also helped Qesa Huss and Opela Barn rescure their missing Acolyte. In a separate cell you found an emaciated man calling himself Roman Castaliogne, the last surviving heir to the line of House Castaligone.
Documents and the family museum proved his claim and you also discovered another startling fact. The woman known as Kirana Castaliogne who helped you plan your assault had died three years earlier and looked nothing like a portrait of the real Kirana. A mystery for another time you pored over the laboratory and plans of Lord Darkhorse.
Mausim and Finn learned that Darkhorse was attempting to destroy the seals on the Dark One's prison using the arcane focus. Apparently this was not his only goal, he also had planned to create his own shatterfall. With his calculations he could control where the shattering would hit hardest and also obtain the majority of the powerful stones making him one of the most powerful people on the planet.
Meeting with the Eyes of the Basilisk once more you learned that the woman known as Kirana left Westinox and was heading to the city of Warshaw. They also asked for the arcane focus to keep it secure but you all declined and instead created a stronger compartment in your carriage.
After your business was concluded in the city you chartered a large ferry to transport all of you and the carriage and horses down to the city of Ulirre. From there you travel the Ulerin Road to the city of Warshaw.
Ahead of you the well traveled snow covered road you see something in the distance...
Plot points/Scenes
On the Ulerin Road
Kirana/ Bella Caix has made her way to Warshaw and is trying to find the seal of the dark one. It is in the vault under the castle. She has been using Revetan the Reclaimer, the warforged created by Isringus, to weaken power in the city. She has disguised him as a human man named Rindell Yggvald a claimant to the throne. The Yggvalds are an old family that used to vie for power in the city but haven't put forth a claim in centuries. With the Queen old and weak Kirana will try to build Rindell a power base to challenge for the crown.
Sava Cogson is in the city to watch the proceedings and find Revetan the Reclaimer. He was given this task by Cog himself. Cog is researching the seals on the dark one's domain and is planning an expedition to enter the dark domain and kill Aer'Chabadzael once and for all. In the meantime he has sent his son to deal with Revetan.
Leaving the city of Ulirre you outfit the carriage and head out east On the Ulerin Road. The temperature rises to a nice 2 centigrade and the sunshine above feels warm and cheery on your faces. It also reflects off of the recent snowfall making for a very bright horizon line. This is broken up by the many copses of fur trees that line the road as well as many large drifts from the windy Ulirre Valley area. It's only a two day ride to Warshaw thanks to the wide, well traveled road. Though the recent weather slows you a bit, already much of the snow on the road has been tamped down thanks to many sleighs, carriages and horses that travel the road.
Eventually you find yourselves on a nice long stretch around noon. An almost snowblind effect emanates from the area around you. You pass through some tightly packed trees that block some of the light giving you some relief. Up ahead you see a basket of some sort made of dark wood just lying in the middle of the road. As you venture closer you see that it is some sort of bassinet, a baby can be seen inside and the cradle rocks slightly with it's movement. What do you do?
As you get close to peer into the bassinet, a crossbow lifts up quickly with a nasty barbed bolt protruding pointing right at your throat. A substance glistens on the edges of the barbs. "Don't move bub." You see the baby inside is a very small bald gnome. Now you see traces of stubble on the little man's face. From the tree line 7 figures rise up from snow banks or point crossbow's from behind trees. They all have crossbow's and short bows pointed at all of you.
A red haired half elven man with a deep scar across his left cheek smiles and steps out "Hands where we can see them. Let's all do this in a civilized manner. We're not here for violence, just a small portion of your gold, maybe some food, then you will be free to go."
[DM Note: He introduces himself as O'dango Jim and calls his gang the Green Banshees. The gnome in the bassinet is Pocketwatch and the others are: Clando Mug, Turf, Bandyl Grill, Wendell Crow, Hodange, and Millicent Monge. They are all Half orc's and Hobgoblins. Level 4 Rogues.]
As the sun sets the air gets cold. The temperature drops to -5 Centigrade and the very air around you stings your skin. As you stop to make camp roll Constitution saving throws [DC 11]. How do you all set up camp? If a fire is made, the warmth is welcome as you all place your frozen hands close to the flames. A meager meal is made of your rations and you sit around the fire for an hour before a sleepiness creeps in.
Frost Worm if necessary
Have the PC's note some large tunnels or sink holes that can be seen off of the road. A Frost Worm lurks about and it is very dangerous. If they wind up in combat with this thing they may need saving. Have a Brass Dragon save them, this would be interesting.
Vertagon Al'Reshi - A brass Dragon of the Vellikis Desert of Venteneheim. He lives near the Misty City in an ancient Temple. Brass dragons love a good conversation and researching important people of all races. This dragon is writing a book on famous adventuring groups and would love to get some stories on a young team. "You are like a bud about to blossom, it is a very exciting time!"
As he takes human form he will look like a half elven man with a red beard and red hair. His eyes have a gold color to them and a streak of golden hair flows over his left ear. He wears a brass colored cloak over some boiled leather armor. He has a lion fur collar and fur lined undergarments that peek through the cracks in his armor. He will also answer questions on the world if anyone has any.

Mausim Dream 04 -
You walk amongst a battlefield strewn with thousands of bodies. The sky overhead is dark with midday clouds. A light rain falls all around you and you pull your cloak tighter to ward off the chill. Your cloak is ripped and torn and darker in some areas. Is it wet or is that blood? As you walk you feel the clamminess of your undergarments as if you have just sweated for hours. Roll an intelligence check [DM Note: DC 14, On a success Mausim can realize the battle is one of the great human elven battles of the great war of SF 2 3245 in the Inorh region of the Elves. Clearly a battle of armies number near 7000 soldiers each.]
As you walk the field with your lieutenant behind you, you assess the losses on the field. All of a sudden you smell the air ionize, a metallic tint to that hits your nostrils. A light forms in the clouds above, a sickly bright green. A face materializes and forms a grin. Difficult to make out features, but you see something that sends a chill down your spine. A dead human woman in an archers uniform twitches. Her left arm shifts and plants the palm down in the mud.
The head lifts in a jerky motion and the eyes glow with a green color that mimics the one in the sky. Then another soldier moves, followed by a dead elven soldier only 30 meters from your position. Another, then another, you draw your sword as the battlefield now comes alive once more.

Crashe Dream 04 -
As you fall into the trance that refreshes your body and mind you go through the katas of Ista Imli. These phrases and thought images make up the strange religion or meditative state that has guided you along your journey. Halfway through your concentration jostles as something pushes on it. A voice in the back of your head speaks. An elven man says "Yes, I must meet with him. Show him in." A vision forms of an elaborate elven tent interior, A table is set up with maps and scrolls. Do you try to push it away or do you allow it to happen?
[DM Note: Crashe must roll a wisdom saving throw DC 13.]
The voice rages "No! This is war, the people must be defended! The humans have made this war!" Then a melancholy seeps in as he says "It's all over, the dark one will rule if we don't do something." The feelings of rage and sorrow sweep over you quickly giving you a nauseous feeling and disturbing your Ista Imli. An elven warrior walks into the tent swiftly, The voice in the back of your head recognizes him.
"General, it's Commander Calendias, he appears to be seriously wounded, come quick." As you walk out the tent you see the slumped over form of an armored elven man with dirty blonde hair. The center of his white tabard is stained red. He falls over as you approach.
The dark sky above is overcast and a light rain falls upon you. As you rush forward to tend to the man a flash of green fills a section of the clouds. You don't feel a pulse in Calendias. As you think of any orders to give Calendias' eyes open and glow with the same green light, his gloved hand in a swift motion grips your throat and squeezes!

Finnix you get a buzz on the sending stone in your pocket. You hear the gravelly voice of the goblin who is your contact on this world. "Meet me at Bulongo's Inn, The black table on the South wall."

Prisoner Transfer and Prisoner 9934
The team will encounter a prisoner train on it's way to Ulirre. There is a prisoner transfer as Penthos is trading some high profile eastern criminals for some spies captured by the city of Westinox. One of which will be a halfling man named Trick Redfern. He is an old friend of Mausim's and they both sailed and worked together in Copenhaus. He can relay news from Copenhaus that Mausim is wanted for stealing the griffon, Grand Theft Aerial, and that he should return home to clear his name. He pleads with Mausim to find a way to spring him from the prison train. He was working briefly as a ships captain for one of the men arrested. A high profile smuggler from Westinox named Cedalphus Ironeye. He is innocent and shouldn't be there.
After feeding and watering the horses you harness them once more to the carriage and trundles down the road. The morning sun rises and greets your faces with welcome warmth. The wind is still biting but the temperature approaches zero centigrade once more. You pass many small farms and two person buggies carting small loads of hay and grain for their animals. The landscape is fairly flat in the immediate area, you see mountain ranges in the distance and rolling hills to the northeast. Large copses of pine mixed with skeletal Deciduous trees can be seen every few miles. Compared to the Ashen forest and your previous adventures these groups of vegetation seem quaint.
Around 2pm you see signs for the city of warshaw claiming only another 8 miles. A large train of wagons being pulled by large draft horses appears in the distance heading down the road towards you. As it gets closer you see armor glint in the sunlight. The drivers wear a burnished leather and carry crossbows and short swords. Next to each of them is a heavily armored gaurd with a longsword. They look to be wearing Chainmail shirts with greaves and helmets.

Exatron Saul follows Finnix to Warshaw. He brings along some spider drones that he has developed. Spider like golems that have web attacks, claw attacks, And a string of webbing they can shoot out. Need stats.
The prisoner caravan on the road to Warshaw is run by a man named Strahan. He is loyal to Vernabogge and accuses Mausim of Grand Theft Aerial and Sedition. Mausim has been entered into the book of treason, this will follow him until Vernabogge is defeated. Strahan will be a recurring villain for Mausim.
Exaspider - specially designed automatons (probably stolen) designed by Exatron Saul. They are small constructs with the features of spiders. Eight metal legs and several glass orbs in their heads that take in visual information. These must be unobstructed to hunt and restrain their prey. They are designed to track and restrain targets. They have a web attack that they can use once per hour but they can shoot out a strand of very sticky flexible steel thread that can reduce a targets movement by half.

Rising Action
The Abandoned Tower
Just above the 23 on the Map of Warshaw is an old abandoned tower. Here Sava Cogson has set up his living space and office to deal with the problem of Revetan and safeguard the seal. He is trying to keep a low profile.
Rega Ragnash has tracked down Sava and now needs Finnix to help him in his assault. He thinks Sava is Cog and want to capture the warforged. He has spent the last decade developing a device that will temporarily shut down a warforged by disrupting the magic that fuels their bodies. The device cost a small fortune and Ragnash had to employ several wizards and artificers to get it down and keep it's true purpose a secret. He will tell Finnix to place the device on the chest of the warforged to put it into a sort of stasis. He also demands that he get first crack at the figure to question the warforged man and may kill him. Finnix can have the pieces to take back to his employer off world. Just a small part of Ragnash's plan of revenge on Adventure Team Grimm, he still needs to kill Vom Fass and then Mew. He has given Karnac a pass due to his objections to Stimpy's enslavement back in the day. He is also not sure he can deal with Blizzard Hops just yet but his time will come.
At the tower he will command the team to strike at Sava quickly and without mercy. No matter how the team deals with Sava the real problem will be Exatron Saul and his Exaspiders. He is here to get the bounty first and make sure Finnix is stranded here on the planet with no money. He has hired a couple of mercenaries to help as well, a Fighter and a Rogue. He has six of his exaspiders and his cannon.
When the battle goes badly for him he will call in a wyvern with a gnome rider to spirit him away. His next move is to work with the strange clan of bounty hunters known as the Ghora's Mask. These are gnomes who ride powerful golems that act as mounts and as their battle companions. [See the cards and minis that we got from Mike they are from Golem Arcana]

Climax
What's happening in Warshaw:
Rodrigues Hortalez Company is making moves to break the Royal Trade & Freight Company's hold on commerce in the region.
Queen Amalia is getting old. Her scions are vying for the throne. Also Revetan the warforged [DM Note: Formerly the rogue known as Rumen Vuighn.] is posing as a human man with royal lineage to act as a spoiler in the race. He is being pushed to do this by Bella Caix La'couer who was using her Kirana disguise to make it easier for the party. Now she has changed her alias to Ricelia Serise. She will attempt to ally with Prince Vestun Ricard Tred Wardashar, human man, who is last in line for the throne. He doesn't mind giving power to Revetan as long as he becomes head advisor or vizier or something.
Leaving him in position to usurp the throne at a later date. Is he willing to murder his sisters? Not yet, but Bella has no problem pushing him in that direction. She is looking to obtain the Dark One's seal that resides in the vault below the castle.
Like all of the Fallen they use these elaborate plots and machinations to achieve their goals rather than brute force or a snatch and grab. Bella often wants to create webs of power she can draw on later as well as serving her Dark Lord. They always have multiple motives several of which are selfish.
Sava Cogson is aware of the Fallen known as Bella Caix La'Couer thanks to his father's research. He has yet to identify her but knows that she is in the city. His secondary objective is to find and destroy Rumen Vuighn, also known as Revetan the reclaimer. A warforged built by Isringus to spite and kill Cog. This all goes back to his time on Adventure Team Grimm and what they did to Helle's Adventuring company 30 years ago.
COMBAT! - While the team talks with Sava, Rega realizes that he isn't Cog. He is irate and may demand to know where the son of a bitch Cog is. His thirst for revenge is powerful. While the conversation takes place Exatron Saul will take a high position and rain down blasts of his arcane cannon. He lets loose his Exaspiders and uses one of the Ghora's Mask golems to fight the team. He thinks Sava is the warforged and will try to kill Finnix to claim the bounty. When the battle begins to turn he will flee using a Wyvern and a rider , one of the Ghora's Mask. He has set up a financial trust with the company.
Mettletown - A large district of laborers and craftsmen, many of whom are upset over their recent treatment by the Royal Trade company and the crown imposing new taxes and export duties.
The Golden Orchard and the Queen's Road - This enchanted area of soil is always fertile and bears thousands of fruit trees easily. All of these trees have survived hundreds of weather events that would have killed any other foliage over the last thousand years. Ice storms, torrential rain, and frigid temperatures have not killed a single tree. It is also incredibly important to the economy of the realm and for the citizens. If the Royal Trade Company decides to export the fruit for profit rather than feed the populace things could go bad quickly.
Warders / Wardashaw City Guard - Well trained and fierce fighters, the guard protects the royal family and it's citizens and is usually quite unfriendly to outsiders. Over the last decade due to corruption and dwindling budget many of the guard now look to bribes or other compensation. Some enjoy some freelance work on the side. Some wonder if a more militaristic government wouldn't get more done than ruling by divine right…

Bella Will use the team to awaken Electra the Unseen. She has taken the sarcophagus from Lord Vedemire while the team was assaulting the manor. She used the team to take down Vedemire and now she has several new objectives. Release Electra, a Fallen she considers her sister and an asset to her future plans, Destroy the seal in the Castle vault for the Dark One.
A side quest in her mind. She needs to maintain her immortality even if the Dark one is defeated. In her mind even if the Dark One rises to power and escapes his prison some heroes will rise up and defeat him. She just needs to survive this future and she will be the most powerful creature on tanaheim.
Use the tower fight to set this up. She has secreted the sarcophagus on the second floor. It needs two kills to release Electra. The fist kill will release a small arcane wave of a purple color. This may change the lights on Finn's armor or give Mausim a weird tickle of power on the back of his neck. The second kill will end the wards on the sarcophagus resulting in a powerful emission of magical energies. A beam of purple and pink light will explode out of the sarcophagus like the end of ghost busters.
During this fight Bella will walk amongst the combatants monologuing. She has cast a powerful ritual spell that allows her to be ethereal for 24 hours. A spell of her own design that she can lift by releasing concentration.

Rodrigues Hortalez Company is making moves to break the Royal Trade & Freight Company's hold on commerce in the region.
Queen Amalia is getting old. Her scions are vying for the throne. Also Revetan the warforged [DM Note: Formerly the rogue known as Rumen Vuighn.] is posing as a human man with royal lineage to act as a spoiler in the race. He is being pushed to do this by Bella Caix La'couer who was using her Kirana disguise to make it easier for the party. Now she has changed her alias to Ricelia Serise. She will attempt to ally with Prince Vestun Ricard Tred Wardashar, human man, who is last in line for the throne. He doesn't mind giving power to Revetan as long as he becomes head advisor or vizier or something.
Leaving him in position to usurp the throne at a later date. Is he willing to murder his sisters? Not yet, but Bella has no problem pushing him in that direction. She is looking to obtain the Dark One's seal that resides in the vault below the castle.
Like all of the Fallen they use these elaborate plots and machinations to achieve their goals rather than brute force or a snatch and grab. Bella often wants to create webs of power she can draw on later as well as serving her Dark Lord. They always have multiple motives several of which are selfish.
Sava Cogson is aware of the Fallen known as Bella Caix La'Couer thanks to his father's research. He has yet to identify her but knows that she is in the city.
