Ashe C2 Episode 19 - Carsigil Park Moths
Previously on...
Virgil Capsaicin's Capricious Conniving Coven of Cavorting Comrades Coveting Currency.
A ornate magically sealed box was accidentally stolen by Wes and Crashe weeks ago and is sought by the man known as Ionn Castaliogne. The contents were finally revealed with the help of Jaron Dartmoor. It was revealed as a powerful arcane focus. How the Vestal Moth knew to steal the team's carriage with the box stowed inside is the current question.
Your team tracked the Moth and their leader Premalkin Po to the city of Westinox. Meeting with a friend of Jaron's, the arcanist known as Tinovar Incenzo, you all decided to dismantle the focus and sell of the pieces. Making a deal with Tinovar you promised to offer him protection as he did the work of breaking down the focus safely and sharing the profits from the magically infused components.
In the meantime you have been exploring the city and looking for leads on where to find the Vestal Moths hideout. With the help of your new companion Virgil Capsaicin, a former gnome polymorphed into a guinea pig (or so he claims) you tracked the thieves to an abandoned temple beneath a local bakery. Confronted by Premalkin Po you made a deal. In exchange for information on who hired him you would exchange the box and your carriage as well as 12000 gold to cover his finder fee.
This bluff was concoted by Finnix to allow you to exit the thieves guild safely and come up with a plan to fight another day. With this meeting now looming over the group you spent the next day looking for ideas on how to survive this meeting or make enough money to carry through the deal. Mausim went to the Lodestone Inn to get information on a rival thieves guild in an attempt to pit both groups against one another. Wes went to Carsigil Park to scout out potential tactical opportunities. Finnix and Virgil attempted to ask the local guards for assistance. The vedalkan and the guinea pig, however, succumbed to their vices and wound up in in the Marble Eye Tavern instead. Drinking and gathering information about local automatons.
Mausim picked up a tail while out in town and confronted the man. The man demurred and quickly exited. Though the meeting at the lodestone did turn up a connection with a man known as Knock Bo. A Link to a thieves guild known as the Maldrith Moth, the parent company to the upstart Vestal Moth. A meeting was set that night at the Fiend's Delight Tavern.
Gathering together at the tavern that night you met with Omrani Spire, a green elven woman, and Knock Bo and made a deal to offer up the underground guild and the head of Premalkin Po the following day. You also saw two members of the Vestal Moth at the same Inn and oddly enough the man known as Belfry who continued to spy on Mausim. Mausim confronted him and forced the man to admit that he was keeping an eye on them for a secret organization. Though genuine fear kept the man from coughing up his secrets he agreed to meet with Mausim the following day at the Marble Eye.
Finnix drunkenly attacked one of the vestal Moth thieves as Wes and Mausim followed on the heels of the second as he attempted to flee. Finnix drunkenly flailed at the human man as he turned to run, but his attempts were hampered by his inebriation. Finally he let loose with a round from his ball bearing gun which shattered the thief's Femur. Wes and Mausim found the other hiding in a tree using the eyes of the falcon Aerin. Mausim cast thunderwave to send the halfling flying out of the tree and falling to his death. The guards rushed in to arrest the remaining thief rolling on the ground.

Plot points/Scenes
You all stand in front of the Fiend's Delight tavern. The overcast night sky pitch black as the stars and moons are obscured. You see the guards trussing up the Thief with the broken leg. A man with a cart stops near the halfling man who lies still on the ground after being knocked out of the tree by Mausim. The air around you is cold with a biting wind blowing every few minutes.
Several patrons from the tavern gather around all of you to gawk at the scene. As the guards do their work many of them get bored and return to their mugs and glasses. The noise of a common tavern and inn resumes. It's just after midnight, What would you like to do? [DM Note: It is possible to meet with Omrani Spire tonight if the party chooses to come up with a plan immediately.]
The Following Day
You all wake the following morning thinking on the events of the previous day. The problem remains, that Premalkin Po is expecting 12000 gold in your carriage as well as the magically sealed box delivered to him in Carsigil Park this afternoon. Your efforts last night were not futile, though. You managed to set up a meeting with Omrani Spire and the Maldrith Moth. The meeting is this morning around 10am at the Calenton General store not far from the Reddleberry bakery, the secret entance to the Vestal Moth guild.
Mausim you remember that you have a meeting with the mysterious man Belfry this very evening at the Marble Eye. He seemed very frightened and on edge as you cajoled him into working with you and against whatever organization is pressuring him to spy on you.
The forces of the Vestal moth are down by two though due to your actions last night. Dola Dunkweed, the halfling died when he hit the ground and Bilgus Knot, the human man, is in Westin guard custody with a broken leg.
The morning is yet again a chill early winter day though quite sunny. A breeze brings the temperature down to the low 30's but the morning light feels good on your faces.
[DM Note: At this point as we wrap up the thieves guild war all signs will point towards the Castaliogne Manor. Whether they track down Kirana or get the info from the Eyes of the Basilisk they must know that Ionn has taken over the family home and has turned it into his own personal laboratory. He plans to use the focus to create his own shatterfall as well as destroy a piece of the dark one's prison, a tablet of white Corundum pentagonal in shape. Twelve of these create a magical ward that banished Aer'Chabadzael from this plane of existence and trapped him in his own domain of Dread. ]
Roland Belfry
[DM Note: Roland Belfry is a minor noble in a lot of trouble. The Belfry family is a minor principality just outside of Westinox. A town and assorted farmlands known as Bluebell. He has squandered his fathers fortune on bad investments and gambling. To pay off his debt he now works for the Eyes of the Basilisk. His contact wears a white mask with horns on it. She dresses in a velvety maroon well made dress. Her voice is low and sultry, almost as if it is enchanted to sound like that.]
As you walk into the Marble Eye Tavern you see familiar faces of the local drunks and some of the laborers from nearby docks and shops. Looking out of place, however, in a far booth is Roland Belfry. He still dresses in his fine breeches and shirt, though he has thrown a ratty leather jacket over it in a feeble attempt to disguise himself. He looks visibly nervous huddled over a glass of Pale Ale.
The tavern is loud tonight but not as raucous as the two nights past. Even so there is a lot of noise in the common room and a lot of motion as patrons move from bar to table and Charlie 4 Eyes tries to keep up.
"It's you, we need to keep this quick. I don't know how much information I can give you." After a few sentences this happens.
Mausim roll a perception check. [DC 17. On a success Mausim can hear a muffled sound and see the dart sticking out of Roland's neck. It is a small dart only 1 inch long with a long thin needle sticking into the skin. It is painted dark blue and has tiny fletching made of peacock feathers. ]
On a fail Mausim just sees Roland go still, his eyes staring ahead lifelessly. Then the body falls to the table and Mausim can see the small dart in his neck. If Mausim Purues the attacker he will lose sight of him. A piece of parchment drifts down in front of you. It floats slightly on the breeze until you reach out your hand to catch. You unroll it fully to read it and words appear as if written by a ghostly hand. "The Church of Eigeralon, Tonight."

Themes
Mausim Dream 03 -
You stand in a large tent with a wide wooden table before you strewn with maps of the surrounding area. The tent is the dark crimson color that matches your cloak and gloves and it is accented with a burnished gold color that matches the griffon symbols on your tabard. Your lieutenant stands on the other side, a brown haired thin man though he has wide shoulder. His eyes are puffy and red as he finishes writing a troop movement order. "Year 4 of this campaign, hard to believe it is almost eventide festival time again."
You watch as he knocks over a lit candle and stumbles a bit due to exhaustion. "Apologies milord!" He scrambles clumsily to pinch out the flame and stop any parchment from lighting on fire. [DM Note: A human man, brown hair and brown eyes kind of shaggy hair with lots of stubble. His name is Ron Fennel.]
As you send him back to his tent, he steps out into the cold night air. A light snow falls in between the tents and a few torches flicker and sputter out amongst the sprawling war camp. As you turn back to your table roll a perception check. An elven man pulls back his hood as you see his cloak move slightly, perfectly blended into the shadows of your tent. Whether an illusion or just expert camouflage you are unsure.
"My Liege Lord has sent a message, he says you, We are fighting the wrong war. He wants to set a meeting." As Mausim responds to this strange message the elf responds with "He said you would be wary and bade me to give you this." From his pack the elven man unrolls a silken cloth tied with a silver rope. Inside is a Pentagonal white stone. The stone is white Corundum, several sigils are carved into it in perfect elven and runic script. In the center is the symbol of the Dark One. A chill runs down your spine or the spine of the man you are seeing visions through. Despite the bravery and weight of command this man holds a cold fear grips him. The blood leaves your face and a queasy feeling punches into your gut.
"General Verilius Rivendrias said you would know what this means. With my message delivered I must leave." And with that you wake up.
Battle at the Park!
Let the party decide if they want to join the ambush group going into the thieves guild or the ambush party going into the Park. The Maldrith Moth will split up into two groups. Omrani Spire will lead the battle in the park and Knock Bo will take the rest of the thieves into the Guild hall under the bakery.
Rewards: A magic item or 2 and 250 gp. Let's pick a weapon and two consumables from the flash bomb or the griffon's saddlebag.
Information: Premalkin Po or any of the remaining Vestal Moth Thieves will reveal that they stole the carriage for the woman known as Kirana Castaliogne. She hired them to keep the box and the carriage out of the hands of Ionn. They know that she is staying at the Lodestone Inn if they want to question her!

Structure
Exposition
Let's Mangle Tinovar...
[DM Note: When the team resolves their issues with the Vestal Moth, they will learn that Kirana Castaliogne is the one who hired them to steal the box. How she knew where it was is another mystery that they should inquire about. They will return to Tinovar to see how he is doing dismantling the focus...]
As you enter the arcanists shoppe you notice the door swings a little looser on it's hinges. A red glow emanates from within as you move past the dozens of glowing magical lights that make up many of the man's signature wares. As you move forward the red light progresses and you see that many of the yellow and orange glowing filaments still remain the same color. It is the glass that is stained red. Flecks and splatter of blood coat the outside of many of the once cheery bulbs.
As you pull back the heavy curtain leading into the back room you smell a dense coppery odor mingled with rust. You feel a wetness beneath your boots. You kick dozens of small tools and broken pieces of metal as you see the workshop has been trashed. As you look up on the far wall of the cranky gnome's once meticulous but overpacked workshop you see his body. Pinned to the wall with a dozen swords and daggers deeply stabbed through him and punched into the wood behind with some force. Something powerful did this, the blades are not removed easily even with decent strength check. Tinovar's face is barely visible through the blood and rended flesh.
Incongrously pinned to the gnome's chest is an expensive piece of white parchment lettered with exquisite calligraphy. A couple of bloody fingerprints can be found on the edges. It reads "I told you all not to take my things..."

Conflict
Next up: All roads lead to the Castaliogne Manor. Ionn has taken over the manor and created his lab. He has obtained the focus and is beginning to assemble his device.
He will destroy the seal and create his shatterfall within the week. They need to infiltrate the manor and kill him and the rest of his mutants.
He will destroy the seal and create his shatterfall within the week. They need to infiltrate the manor and kill him and the rest of his mutants.
Tinovar has given the team four sending stones to stay in contact.
The Vestal Moth thieves guild can be found somewhere under Westinox. It has 4 entry ways. Two subterranean through the sewers, one through the bakery on the north side of the city and one through the roof of a nearby four story building. A laundry chute slides down into the crate room of the guild. Premalkin Po is the leader of the guild and may be cajoled into talking to the group or he may hold to his deal with Ionn.
Lord Darkhorse - Ionn has taken over the Castaliogne Manor just inside the inner walls of the city. The Vestal Moth Thieves Guild - The players are interested in finding the entrance to this guild and to find out why they tried to steal the box. Bella'Caix L'Couer - A formerly human woman who has pledged herself to the Dark One in exchange for immortality and the destruction of the Elven Race. She has hated elves for over four thousand years and her hatred has caused her to consider actual genocide. Her immortality and acquired power are the tools she will use to complete this mission. She is currently posing as new alias is
Kirana Vargiese Castaliogne, an attractive half elven woman with black hair. She poses as an aristocratic woman whose family was destroyed by Lord Vedemire Darkhorse. She is looking into what he is doing to use it as a way to destroy him. All she needs is group of powerful but dimwitted adventurers who can help her. Exatron Saul is in the city waiting for Finnix. He has heard the same rumors as Finnix and is investigating the strange automaton that has been sighted.
The Eyes of the Basilisk - An ancient organization now reawakened, the Eyes are looking for ways to stop the Dark One from returning. The members wear masks to conceal their identities and most of them are wealthy or high ranking members of society. They are interested in Ionn Castaliogne and have pieced together that he is not an actual Castaliogne family member. Their records show no such family member existing. They will seek an audience with our PC's once they find out that they are in the city and have had dealings with Ionn. They may demand a test of competence, a bloody test of survival in the lower rooms of Rinvallon Castle. If the PC's survive the gates will open once more and a piece of expensive parchment will be pinned to a wall "We will speak of this again..."
Let's use two stone golems with a twist. Though these task may seem difficult indeed add in two metal stars that can be found on the arched ceiling above. Inserting those stars into the sockets on the back of the golems necks will deactivate them!
Reddleberry's Bakery - The owner of the bakery and head baker is a Halfling man named Ned Reddle. He was a former thief who went straight. He is currently being blackmailed by the Vestal Moth to maintain his bakery as a front for their back room dealings. They maintain their power over him by threatening to reveal the truth of his past to his wife Eartha who has just given birth to their newborn son, Radish. If he gets indignant about his position with Premalkin Po they escalate and threaten to kill his family.
There is a secret door in the oven room that leads to an underground passage which is the entry 2 point on the Vestal moth map.
