Sharin
General Information
Etymology
The word "Sharin" has two possible origins:- "Sharin" could be an imperfect combination of the two older words "Shis" and "Rina", the first meaning "breeze" and the latter meaning "warm"
- "Sharin" might be a corruption of the older word "Eshinaar", which means "Goat"
Landscape & Geography
Sharin is tucked away from most of Daria by the The Zizan Mountain Range. However, transport is fairly easy from Sharin to the south-western states, as there are no obstructing mountains. Coastal sharin enjoys a dry summer climate, whereas the more inland areas experience a more colder, temperate-like climate. As a result, the majority of inhabitants live closer to the coast.
The Ziz River, which is the only body of water found in the region, passes through northern Sharin, and drains in the south-west of the state.
Restricted Autonomy
The state of Sharin is assigned a Self-Governance Index of 2. As a result, Sharin's major economical policies are not decided by its regional council, rather by the High Council of Daria. Due to historical reasons, The Regional Council of Sharin is strictly forbidden from commanding any sort of military organizations or groups, too;the only military organizations allowed within the borders of Sharin are those controlled by the High Council.
A Hub for Separatists
Due to the long history of isolation of Sharin, and the southern communities from the rest of Daria, a lot of people see Sharin not as a constituent of Daria, but rather an independent nation, and thus alien to the northern and eastern communities. This long-held belief is what gave rise to The Southern Liberation Front, or The SLF for short.
The SLF is considered a terrorist organization by the High Council and if someone is found out to have ties to it, they are punished severely. Fortunately, due to the absence of any kind of attacks in southern Daria in the past several months, it's believed the SLF has gone into dormancy.
History & Creation
Zizan & Quom
When retelling Sharinian history, an ancient legend comes to mind: The Story of Zizan and Quom.
Zizan was a very simple-minded lumberjack, while Quom was a scavenger. They were a lonely couple that lived in the northern region of Sharin. One day, when Zizan left to cut some trees for firewood, Quom accidentally encountered what looked like a goat— some people think it was more of a sheep. The goat had a deep cut on its right hip. It didn't bleed, yet it couldn't walk.
When the injured goat fell on Quom's warm lap begging for aid, Quom carried it inside of the cabin. With time, Quom's love, and the warmth emitted from Zizan's firewood burning, the goat quickly recovered. However, to the caring couple's astonishment, the goat started bleeding from somewhere even though the wound was closed. The goat quickly leapt and ran south for 4 days leaving a trail of blood. Zizan and Quom would follow this trail for 3 days and 2 nights.
In the end, Zizan and Quom never found the goat, instead they found a paradise: Sharin.
The Dull Era
Sharin's history as a settlement extends from all the way back to The Dull Era. During these years, Sharin was a small duchy located at the southern fringes of the Zizan Mountains; it didn't occupy the southern coast until much later.
Most of Sharin's history during The Dull Era is mostly expanding towards the coast. Eventually, The Duchy of Sharin reaches the coast just before The Low Era.
The Low Era
Sharin, or the land Sharin occupied at the time, wasn't one of the first recipients of Mana, and magic. As a result, Sharin was greatly affected by its western neighbor: The Kingdom of Miral, whose territories at the time were one of the first recipients of Mana. These effects from Miral came to be known as The Wars of Aggression.
After these wars, in which Sharin lost half of her territories to Miral before capitulating, new advancements were made—not just Mana making its way to Sharin, but Sharin was one of the earliest states to develop a proper navy, perhaps due to being left alone, and was the first to reach Komtitrasz, or Quomtitras . This event that would eventually cause Sharin to dominate Daria throughout the rest of The Low Era came to be known as "The Sharinian Miracle".
The Sharinian domination of Daria was most likely because of the discovery of Komtitrasz and the subsequent exploitation of the land for mining purposes. Also, Sharinians were the only people who invested and used their crude magic to enhance their ships rather than their swords, hence the creation of Eyed Ships: Ships with enchanted eyes that allow them to dodge rocks and sail smoothly, they also frightened the nomads of Komtitrasz badly. Unfortunately, Eyed ships would eventually be banned by the new Darian government and would be remembered only by their presence on the Seal of Sharin.
By the end of The Low Era, Sharin had control over everything west, and south, of the Zizan Mountain Range, the southern seas, and the island of Kalesini. Nevertheless, this would soon completely change.
The High Era
The start of the High Era, the advancements of Magic, and the creation of Magical Institutions, marked the certain downfall of one of the oldest states of Daria. Throughout The High Era, Sharin would lose influence over the states of The Meszar Valley. The High Era would also see the breakout of the four Darian Interwars, with Sharin participating in the fourth one only, just to protect its territories down south in Komtitrasz.
Even though Sharin actually won several battles and kept her overseas possessions, under Phylae Quotri Sharin ceded her territories in Komtitrasz and the island of Kalesini to the newly-formed The Federation of Daria. What were once colonies of Sharin, became the states of Neris, Kerkas, and The Archipelago of Sarsi Rossi with the creation of The Federation of Daria.
Intel Not Available for Public Disclosure
The Darian government, particularly The Szoltag, is aware that The Doves have a branch operating in Sharin. However, they have yet to pinpoint where it is exactly.
The SLF was originally created as an excuse for The Darian Federal Government to increase their presence in Sharin.
