The Most Holy Inquisition of the Western Church

"Guilty of horse thievery, perjury, and a litany of heinous acts, including premeditated murder! What say you in your defense?" thundered the Judge, his eyes ablaze with righteous zeal.   I stood firm and replied grimly, "I did what I had to do to survive, and that man I dispatched deserved every ounce of retribution. He masqueraded as a noble, but he was a ravenous wolf draped in sheep's clothing, a vile worshiper of some foul carrion god that goaded him to slaughter the impoverished and desecrate their bodies! I'd do it all over again, without shedding a single tear for his wicked soul!" My words were resolute as I faced my accuser.   "He was a nobleman! You should have sought the guards or proper authorities if you witnessed his crimes, instead of embarking on a vigilante's crusade!" The judge snarled at me, and I knew I would soon dance the deadman's jig or face a far more drawn-out demise. That's when he spoke, the man I now saw as my savior, an angel of salvation clad in darkness, his voice hard as stone with a rasp that could smooth a thorn bush.   "By order of the Holy Inquisition, this man shall repay his debts through our service," declared the enigmatic figure.   The judge nearly choked in surprise, and truth be told, I was taken aback as well. Instead of facing the noose, I found myself facing an uncertain fate, recruited into the dreaded Inquisition. The Judge dared not question the Church's dark-hatted agents. My journey from awaiting the gallows to confronting an enigmatic destiny had been swift and unexpected. I mustered the courage to ask why he spared me, and the somber-faced man in the slouch hat simply replied, "I'd have done the same."   In that moment, I realized that I had exchanged one form of captivity for another, and as the Inquisitor's new recruit, my path was set on a treacherous course into the shadows.   -From the Secret Journal of Clayton Stone, new recruit to the Inquisition

Structure

The Inquisition's power lies not solely in the few Inquisitors who lead its ranks, but in the vast network of agents, contacts, and support specialists that enshroud them. These agents, while not official servants of the Western Church, are nonetheless dedicated to the cause and are paid handsomely for their loyalty. While they may not hold formal ranks within the Holy Inquisition, they form the backbone of its operations, working tirelessly to gather intelligence, track down leads, and provide crucial support to the Inquisitors in their pursuit of the wicked.   The Inquisitors themselves, adorned with the iconic black slouch hats, operate under a structured hierarchy established by their founder, based on their individual talents and expertise in apprehending and hunting down malevolent forces. The journey to becoming a full-fledged Inquisitor begins as an Apprentice Seeker, where the neophyte learns the ropes and receives guidance from experienced mentors. Advancing through the ranks, they become Journeyman Seekers, honing their skills and mastering the art of detecting hidden evils.   Upon proving their mettle, they are bestowed the title of Seeker, fully inducted into the ranks of the Inquisition. But their journey doesn't end there; it is merely the beginning. As Apprentice Inquisitors, they take on more substantial responsibilities, embarking on their first solo missions under the watchful eye of their superiors.   Through dedication and experience, they ascend to the esteemed rank of Journeyman Inquisitors, where they demonstrate a greater understanding of the darkness that pervades the realm. By this stage, they may also oversee the training of new recruits, shaping the next generation of Seekers.   Reaching the pinnacle of their careers, they become Inquisitors, holding significant authority within the ranks and leading teams of Seekers. Those who distinguish themselves further earn the title of Senior Inquisitors, heralded for their exceptional achievements and strategic acumen.   The esteemed few who attain the rank of Master Inquisitor are recognized for their legendary prowess and exceptional service to the church and the realm. They are granted wide latitude in their operations and possess the authority to command respect from all ranks below them.   The rarefied echelons of the Inquisition are occupied by High Inquisitors, leaders of regional branches, and instrumental in coordinating the efforts of Inquisitors and agents alike.   At the zenith of the Inquisition's hierarchy stands the Supreme Inquisitors. These exalted individuals hold the highest authority, guiding the overall operations of the Holy Inquisition across an entire nation.   Only one rank remains above the Supreme Inquisitor and that is the Grand Master whom all ranks of the Inquisition must answer to and commands the entire organization who in turn answers only to the crown and the leaders of the Western Church.   Within the labyrinthine web of the Inquisition, ranks may not be everything, but skill, dedication, and results truly define an individual's standing. From the humblest Apprentice Seeker to the illustrious Supreme Inquisitors, they all play a vital role in preserving the light, ensuring that the shadow of evil finds no refuge in the realm.   It is of note that some inquistors also carry duel titles, some are members of the clergy, nobles, land owners and the order see's no reason to disallow them to retain or earn such. Thus one might encounter a Lord Inquisitor, a Sir or Lady Inquisitor, or a Cardinal Inquisitor as examples.

Culture

As the Inquisition expanded its reach beyond the borders of Paladius, it found itself adapting and assimilating elements of the diverse cultures it encountered in Serrosia, Russvaria, and Zophor. While serving the greater body of the Western Church, each region's Inquisitors brought their own flair and symbolism, reflected not only in their choice of hats but also in their preferred attire and tools.   In Paladius, the black Slouch Hat remained iconic, a symbol of authority and fear among the populace. It epitomized the dark and mysterious nature of the Inquisition, as its wearers prowled through the shadows, rooting out evil and delivering justice to the wicked.   In Serrosia, the Inquisitors adopted a different style, donning black Cavalier Hats adorned with a single white feather. This elegant hat symbolized both duty and purity, representing the Inquisitors' commitment to upholding justice and the divine values of the Western Church. In their presence, there was an air of nobility, as they moved with grace and determination, guided by a higher calling.   In Zophor, the Inquisitors sported wide-brimmed leather hats aptly named Witch Hunters hats. This choice of headwear reflected the region's history of witch trials and hunting down dark practitioners of the arcane. The wide brim provided shade from the harsh sun, while the leather material conveyed a sense of rugged determination and adaptability.   Meanwhile, the Russvarian Inquisitors embraced practicality and resilience in their attire. Faced with the frigid temperatures of their homeland, they favored thick quilted gambeson hoods and mantles. These garments not only provided warmth but also added an extra layer of defense against potential foes. Their style spoke of resilience and resourcefulness, as they braved the harsh elements in their pursuit of justice.   Beyond their attire, the Inquisitors of each region also integrated unique tools and practices into their approach. Drawing from the wisdom of their host cultures, they crafted specialized methods to combat the hidden evil lurking within their borders.   Yet, despite the differences in fashion and preferred tools, the core principles of the Inquisition remained unwavering - a relentless pursuit of justice, a steadfast commitment to the Western Church, and an unyielding defense of the realm against malevolent forces. As the Inquisition thrived and expanded across Serrosia, Russvaria, and Zophor, its diverse yet united front showcased the strength of unity in the face of darkness. Together, the Inquisitors of the Western Church stand as a formidable force, upholding the sanctity of their lands and protecting the innocent from the encroaching shadows of evil.

Public Agenda

The Public Agenda of the Inquisition is clear and resolute - to root out the evil that lurks in the shadows of society. With unwavering determination, the Inquisitors of the Western Church embark on their solemn duty to expose and eradicate malevolent forces that seek to harm the innocent and threaten the peace of the realm.   Their mission is transparent, as they stand as beacons of justice and defenders of the divine. Embracing the teachings of the Western Church, the Inquisition strives to protect the realm from the unseen malevolence that could prey upon the unsuspecting. Their pursuit knows no bounds, for they delve into the darkest corners of society, unearthing the wicked and holding them accountable for their heinous deeds.   Inquisitors operate under the banner of righteousness, shielding the innocent from the insidious machinations of malevolent entities. By standing strong in their convictions.   As they traverse the realms of Paladius, Serrosia, Russvaria, and Zophor, the Inquisitors uphold the values of truth, justice, and order. Their allegiance to the Western Church empowers them to stand united, ensuring that no evil remains hidden from their vigilant gaze.   The public at large understands, respects and at times fears the noble cause of the Inquisition, as its agents are seen as protectors and enforcers of divine justice.   Even the Church itself is not immune to the Inquistion and it often acts as the first and foremost body at ferreting out internal corruption with in the heart of the Western Church.

Assets

The assets of the Inquisition are truly impressive, backed by a triumvirate of support from the Western Church, the Crown, and in some instances, the personal wealth of its own agents. This substantial financial backing enables the Inquisition to operate with unparalleled efficiency and effectiveness in its relentless pursuit of evil.   The Western Church, recognizing the vital role played by the Inquisition in upholding its values and protecting the innocent, ensures a steady flow of resources to sustain their operations. As an integral arm of the Church, the Inquisition's coffers are well-filled, allowing them to acquire the tools, equipment, and provisions necessary for their missions. Their connection to the Church also grants them access to valuable information and intelligence networks, enhancing their ability to unmask hidden threats and infiltrate nefarious organizations.   The Crown, understanding the crucial role played by the Inquisition in maintaining order and safeguarding the realm, provides further support to bolster their endeavors. The Crown's financial contributions ensure that the Inquisition can operate independently, free from the constraints of bureaucracy and red tape. This allows them to act swiftly and decisively in the face of emerging threats, making them a formidable force to be reckoned with.   Moreover, many Inquisitors are individuals of wealth and influence in their own right. As dedicated defenders of justice, they often use their personal fortunes to supplement the Inquisition's resources. This demonstrates their unwavering commitment to the cause and their willingness to invest in the greater good.   With such robust financial backing, the Inquisition can afford to recruit and train the most skilled agents, maintain an extensive network of informants and contacts, and equip their personnel with the finest gear and weaponry available. This financial prowess also enables them to maintain a wide array of safe houses, secure communication channels, and magical equipment, further enhancing their capabilities in tracking down hidden malevolence.   In combination, the impressive assets of the Inquisition create an indomitable force, one that remains ever vigilant, ready to confront the darkest evils that seek to undermine the sanctity of the realm. As they deploy their resources with purpose and precision, the Inquisition stands as an unwavering pillar of protection, shielding the innocent and preserving the light of justice in a world where shadows threaten to engulf all.

History

Evil Begets Evil: Unraveling the Dark Past   During the tumultuous era of the Mage Wars, the Heartlands of Terigoth bore witness to an era of fear and justified apprehension towards those wielding malevolent and perilous magic. Among the regions affected, Eastern Terigoth's Paladius suffered most deeply. Although united under one High King due to the menacing threat of Hordain's undead armies and the formation of the Knight Alliance, the populace harbored a profound dread and loathing for any magic that did not emanate from a cleric devoted to good or non-evil deities.   In the years bridging the end of the Mage Wars and the advent of the Age of Shattered Destiny, Paladius plunged into the "Madness of the Witch Pyres." Accusations of dark magic propagated like wildfire, and superstitious witch hunters, most of whom were charlatans, took the mantle of judge, jury, and executioner for anyone merely accused of dabbling in malevolent powers. Still grappling with the aftermath of the war against Hordain and the sinister forces that had plagued their lands, the church and ruling powers struggled to differentiate true sources of evil from the delusions of a frightened populace while maintaining order.   The Trial of "Witch-Finder" Tully Ambrose: Unmasking Evil   Count Eduard Whiterose, a Paladin devoted to the god of white magic, Trathar, and a seasoned veteran of the Undead Wars with Hordain, brought the madness to a head when he discovered that over a dozen individuals, mostly women, had been ruthlessly tortured to death by a man hailed as the greatest witch-finder in the realm - Tully Ambrose.   Undeterred by the fervent superstition that had gripped Paladius, Count Whiterose investigated Ambrose's actions and found them baseless, rooted in fear and sadistic cruelty. Driven by divine magic and his unyielding devotion to justice, the Paladin declared Ambrose unholy, unlawful, and a heretic against the divines. The witch-finder could not escape the long arm of the Count.   As Count Whiterose pursued Ambrose, he unearthed damning evidence revealing the witch-finder as a malevolent monster in league with dark forces. Exploiting the fear and hysteria surrounding evil magic, Ambrose had ritually tortured and murdered numerous innocent souls. Yet, drawing the attention of an experienced war veteran proved to be Ambrose's downfall. The Paladin Count pledged to end the witch-finder's vile deeds, and nothing, not even heaven or hell, could halt his pursuit of justice.   Within months of being declared a heretic, Ambrose was captured and incarcerated, locked in chains within a dungeon cell. Despite his assertions that he had served the gods, the count's divine magic exposed Ambrose's lies, and the witch-finder was assured he would receive the justice he had denied his victims.   A week later, Ambrose stood trial in the city of Calinham, the event made a public spectacle. Count Whiterose presented irrefutable evidence, factual and logical, while those allied with him countered Ambrose's supporters, turning the crowd against the witch-finder. Ambrose's most ardent followers made a final desperate attempt to defend him, only to be subdued by guards and arrested for conspiring to disrupt a lawful trial.   The End of the Witch-Finders: A New Beginning   Ambrose's trial sent shockwaves throughout Paladius, leading to a cascade of trials that sought to avenge the innocent lives lost to the sadistic witch hunters. Over a hundred and fifty individuals met their fate on the gallows for their unlawful acts of torture and murder. With the support of the clergy and nobility, the Witch Finders faced a formidable adversary.   However, the malevolent forces still lurked in the land, and many witch finders were found to be cultists of dark gods or aligned with extra-planar malevolence. The need for proper training to combat these threats became evident.   Unexpectedly, a former mage warlord, Starisa Weisstien, and her newly-founded High Guild of the Arcane approached the Western Church. They implored the church, particularly the clergy devoted to gods of magic, to help educate the populace about magic, its uses, and the dark arts employed by malevolent magi. The Church and High King recognized knowledge as their greatest weapon, and fully supported the formation of a specialized force to combat hidden evils.   The Holy Inquisition is Born: Warriors of Light who must act in the shadows   Armed with knowledge and backed by the government, the Western Church set out to recruit the most formidable and, in some cases, the most ruthless individuals. Count Whiterose, appointed as the first Grand Master of the Inquisition, shaped the standards for its agents. Weak-willed, ignorant, or petty individuals had no place in the Inquisition. This self-governing force would serve the church, providing support and diligently hunting down evil that hid among the people. While occasionally aiding in the battle against monsters, their primary targets were hidden cultists, sadistic murderers, and those who wore masks of civility while concealing dark hearts. The Holy Inquisition recognized no barriers of wealth, station, or power when it came to delivering divine justice upon the guilty.   The Inquisition's legacy stretches across the annals of history:   As generations passed, the Inquisition's influence extended to every nation within the King's Alliance, earning its place as a revered servant of the Western Church. When orders of knights succumbed to corruption under demonic lords like Baphomet, or when vampires concealed themselves within noble ranks, treating their subjects as mere cattle for sustenance, the Inquisition stood ready to answer the call. As power-hungry murderers embraced the malevolent forces, the agents of the Inquisition emerged as a hidden dagger wielded by the clergy, secretive and potent. Their iconic black slouch hats became an unmistakable symbol, signaling to nobles and commoners alike that it was wise to conduct oneself with utmost propriety in their presence.   The Inquisitors, revered as relentless hunters of evil, commanded both fear and respect. Armed with the knowledge bestowed upon them by the High Guild of the Arcane, they proved to be formidable adversaries against the darkness that plagued the realm. Wherever malevolence slithered into the shadows, the Inquisition's vigilant eyes watched, ready to confront the most heinous of crimes and deliver righteous retribution.   As the centuries unfolded, the Inquisition grew in reputation and influence. Their loyalty to the church and commitment to justice fortified the alliance between the crown and the divine, forging an unbreakable bond. Their activities became shrouded in mystery, whispered tales circulating among both the nobility and the common folk. While the extent of their reach remained enigmatic, their dedication to the eradication of evil cast an enduring legacy.   The black slouch hats that concealed their visages became synonymous with both fear and hope. To the innocent, the sight of a slouch-hatted Inquisitor brought comfort and reassurance, for they knew that justice was on their side. For the guilty, the same sight struck terror, for they understood that the long arm of the Inquisition reached even the most remote corners of the realm.   Throughout history, the Inquisition remained steadfast in its duty, protecting the innocent, uprooting wickedness, and guarding the realm from the tides of darkness that sought to engulf it. The Western Church, its people, and the noble houses reveres the Inquisition as an unyielding bastion of light, fiercely dedicated to preserving the sanctity of their world.   As the sun sets upon the realm each evening, casting long shadows across the land, the memory of the Inquisition endures, an ever-present reminder that evil will not escape the judgment of the righteous. Though its agents may be few they are among the best, their resolve is unyielding, and the shadow of the Inquisition stretches far and wide, reaching into every corner where malevolence dare creep.

"Unwavering Faith, Righteous Zeal, and Swift Justice"

"It is not enough that the wicked find effort to conceal themselves in the guise of innocence. It is not enough, that some are obliged to act in the shadows for our defense, but that there are men who claim to be such as a simple excuse to be arbitrary violent and cowardly villains who couldn't stand even a fraction of a second against a proper Magi?" - Remos Valerian of house Whitecastle at the trial of Tully Ambrose.   "I seem to unverve you duke, is there a reason for that?" - Clayton Stone ever curious and dangerous   "Burning people alive is barbarous and cruel, the noose is how real witch hunters kill heretics, diabolists and demonolgists" -Inquisitor Beatrix Lewis
The rain hammered down like icy spears, but it couldn't deter the man draped in a dark, weathered cape and adorned with brass buckles on his slouch hat. Sanity had long forsaken him, replaced by an unyielding pursuit of justice. He peered through the cascading drops, down his hawkish nose, undeterred by the cold infernal rain that fell upon the crime scene. His companion, dressed in humble attire, held a flickering hooded lantern, appearing melancholic to endure the relentless downpour alongside the man in the dark hat.   "Do you have any inkling as to how the poor soul met her end?" inquired the lantern-bearer, avoiding direct gazes at the corpse while pondering the wickedness that could perpetrate such evil upon their fellow man.   The man with the slouch hat replied with a voice reminiscent of dark, bitter brew mixed with gravel and shattered glass, "Someone shall pay dearly for this."   Placing two silver pennies upon the lifeless eyes, the man in the hat uttered a prayer, beseeching the ravens to guide her soul to the afterlife. The somber witness knew that no peace would come until the malefactor faced the relentless justice of his employer.   The Inquisitor was unleashed, a tireless wolf-hound on the prowl, unyielding and unswerving in his pursuit of the prey. No obstacle would deter him on his relentless path to deliver retribution upon the perpetrator.   -From the Journal of Brian Wellsly lantern bearer for Inquisitor Clayton Stone, in the service of the Holy Inquisition.
