during the Nola Incident. The Nola Gene came from Delusion spilling his own blood into the ingredients of the new Birthday flavor of Nola Cola; which was marketed as having the smell and flavor of cake batter.
Transmission & Vectors
It can be acquired from drinking one of the infected cans of Nola Cola, or having it poured into open wounds. It is also passed through birth.
Causes
Delusion broke into the Nola Cola factory and infected the source with his blood. His power was his bloods ability to change something on a genetic level.
Symptoms
The development of powers for most people, and either degradation of your physical form or enhancement of powers for others.

Lower income areas who the soda was first marketed to.

Whoever drunk the new Birthday flavor when it came out now have the gene, and passed it down to their children.
History
After the incident it took about 6 months for anyone to show any powers. Slowly more people would gain them as well, or their children or grandchildren would gain them. Sometimes it would be a cause for celebration, and others it ruined their lives. But it became a new reality for people, with some of the drinks even making it overseas. It globally changed things, just in America it led to the Purity Political faction which has gained enough power to bring whole states to their way of thinking.

There will always be those who despise anyone that isn't a regular human. Besides them, most people will judge others based on how they use their abilities rather than just having them period.
