The Barrens

The region known as 'The Barrens' is a wild expanse unclaimed by any nation, and a haven for outlaws and exiles as a result. The area is heavily forested and wild, with many free-ranging monsters, rampaging groups of bandits, and goblinoid war parties roaming the area. It has been less than a decade since Lord Senarr led his people into the area to settle and pacify it, and they have only begun to penetrate the edges of the realm.   The territory stretches from Brankara in the north to Kadaver in the south, taking up the entire western side of the atoll ring of the Sundered Lands. The Belt of Medusa separates the region from the Empire of Dhargul, but its only defenses are its wildness, inaccessibility, and the resident monsters. The hobgoblins of the Empire frequently send scouting parties into the area to try to gain a foothold, but have been unable to get sufficient numbers through the mountains to establish a foothold before the wildlife savages their forces.   Senarr Keep was built on a mountaintop plateau with the village of Lumberhorn and a logging camp at the base of the mountain. Composed of settlers from Brankara led by the self-exiled Lord Senarr, the group is made up of hardy individualists dedicated to forging a new realm despite the challenges facing them.   The group of heroes known as the Spellhands saved the Keep from an invading hobgoblin army, rooting out an evil cult of the dark god Rawhn working with them and driving them from their base. Lord Senarr promised them lands and titles once the area was pacified, and in exchange, the group poured their hard-won treasure into the area. Paying for construction of part of the fortifications around the expanding village, as well as a fortified tavern and hotel within the village, they range into the surrounding wilds on a daily basis.   The Barrens hold many secrets dating back to the time before The Sundering, including ancient elven transport portals leading to strange locations, hidden fortresses and labyrinths, and the lairs of mad geniuses and wild monsters alike. Ferreting out these secrets, pacifying threats to the settlement, and finding new ways to bolster the growth of the community, has become the Spellhands' primary role.
