Ka-Tepi Bazaar

The bazaar in Ka-Tepi is a surprisingly large and well-attended area, with dozens of stalls. As numerous caravans use the town as a waypoint and rest area, many merchants take advantage of the opportunity to either vary their wares or sell their entire load and buy fresh items before starting the trip homeward.   The central bazaar is a large courtyard with tall stone pillars rising from it. Great sails of brightly-coloured cloth stretch between them and reflect the worst of the sun's light and heat, allowing both buyers and sellers to bustle around even on the brightest days.   The bazaar is filled with a cacophony of noises and scents, everything from the calls of merchants to the scents of spices and perfumes fills the air in the muted light. The stalls in the bazaar cover the whole gamut of styles, ranging from simple rugs on the flagstones with an assortment of wares, to wooden display stands or wooden stalls draped with fabric. Some of the largest stalls are entire tents, such as that of Haria el-Harith, one of the prominent magic-sellers.   The bazaar is regularly patrolled by members of the Ka-Tepi Town Watch, the veteran members of which know most of the usual thieves and pickpockets on sight. Sergeant Amar el-Taran is a frequent sight here as he keeps a wary eye on the happenings in the courtyard. A pair of guardsmen are also permanently stationed on the steps of the town meeting hall and council chamber, which opens onto the bazaar.   Additional laneways open off the sides of the main courtyard to join smaller courtyards, and smaller bazaars are scattered across Ka-Tepi for the regular merchants selling day-to-day goods and food, but only one area of Ka-Tepi is recognised instantly as The Bazaar of Ka-Tepi.
