Gil Star

A gil star is a bulkĀ gil plate coin minted by Bajapur as a trade currency. Formed of a small plate of electrum one inch by two inches in size, they bear an octagonal gem encapsulated in the centre, surrounded by the likeness of the Tycoon who issued them on one side, and the silhouette of the city of Bajapur on the other.   There are three values of gil stars, denominated by the gem. The fifty-gil star bears a diamond, while the hundred-gil star contains a sapphire. The two hundred fifty-gil star is adorned with a ruby. Whilst the individual design of the gil and the gil star changes every seven years, as the office of Tycoon changes hands, the weight and purity of the electrum and the type and clarity of the gem remains constant, allowing them to serve as a stable currency.   Like the gil plate, it is remarkably difficult to accurately counterfeit, and should the merchant houses of Bajapur discover any attempt, the full economic and military might of the city will descend on the offender.   Gil stars are accepted by merchants across the Sundered Lands with little loss in value as they can be readily traded onward. They usually eventually find their way back to Bajapur in trade caravans, as Bajapur merchants and sellers tend to offer poor exchange rates for any foreign coinage used in the city.
