Introduction to Stagburn Dale

Written by Janto

Welcome to Stagburn Dale! This is a fully-formed settlement and can work as a starter town for any fantasy TTRPG campaign. It's full of fleshed-out NPC's, many adventure hooks and side quests, nearby dungeons, and an expansive plot to foil an ancient evil. It is part of the Ederim setting but can easily be modified to fit any existing campaign.

The Basics:

  • There's a longstanding war in Ederim between two powerful nations
  • The war's not going well, so mistrust and nationalism are high on both sides
  • Stagburn Dale is a sleepy town of humans in the Commonwealth far from the front lines, but it's also full of secrets
  • In this world, elves are great craftspeople, philosophers, urban sophisticates, and actors often oppressed by human society
  • Dwarves generally live in dark forests away from human settlements and safeguard nature
  • Halflings are called tonttus and still remember when humans enslaved their ancestors

The Continent of Ederim

Two large nation-states occupy this continent. In the north, the Commonwealth of Vomerro is a republic of cities, towns, and villages tied together politically for trade, security, and defense. It's a cosmopolitan place where two human ethnicities, the Husliq and the Tummarand, generally share power. Elves and halflings (called tonttus ) can be found here, although dwarves are rare.   To the south, the Kingdom of Pezzlio operates as a military dictatorship. It's dominated by nationalistic humans, with other races found only in the largest cities. Their society is based on a ruling class of warriors and a subjugated class of peasants and workers called zets.

The War

For centuries the Commonwealth and Pezzlio have been involved in a prolonged war, although neither nation quite agrees how the fighting began. The armies of the Commonwealth and Pezzlio sometimes invade the lands of their enemy, but for the last hundred years or so, combat has stalemated to a border zone between them called the Shifting Lands. There, armies contest over a series of castles and keeps. The successful besieging of a fortress is celebrated as a national victory and the loss of one a civic disaster.

Stagburn Dale

Stagburn Dale is a small village in the southwestern corner of the Commonwealth. It sits at the edge of a great, dark, primeval western forest and atop very ancient dwarven ruins. Very few citizens have explored either.   The town is governed by a mayor who oversees the settlement and a forester who manages the hinterland. As with every town and city in the Commonwealth, Stagburn is part of a larger region administered by a Ward Duke. The previous duke took a liking to Stagburn and built a mansion here. Unfortunately he recently died (under mysterious circumstances) and Stagburn's hopes for prestige and prosperity disappeared.
