Human (Tummarand, Husliq, and Pezzlian)

Written by Janto

The human ethnicities of Orbis fall into three main categories:
  • Husliq: descendants of the second group of settlers to come to the Commonwealth
  • Tummarand: descendants of the first human settlers in the Commonwealth
  • Pezzlian: warrior and zet inhabitants of the Kingdom of Pezzliio (also immigrants from the Kingdom to the Commonwealth)
All three groups contain a range of skin colors, hair styles, and appearances.  Skin color does not determine ethnic identity, but rather ancestry to one of the three original settler communities.  Despite the political importance of this identity, there is considerable intermarriage between Husliq and Tummarand in the Commonwealth.  Pezzlian immigrants are an underclass, but in the Kingdom of Pezzlio, bloodlines of the warrior caste are tightly regulated.   The continent of Ederim has been dominated by human cultures since the Fourth Age. Rapid human breeding, city building, and territorial conquests contributed to this early expansion that ultimately enslaved the tonttus, conquered the elves, and pushed the dwarves into the deep western forests. Today, the two major human nations, the cosmopolitan Commonwealth of Vomerro and the autocratic Kingdom of Pezzlio, control huge areas of the continent.

Culture

Human culture is varied in the Commonwealth where every town and city has its own traditions, local customs, and proud history. Pezzlio strives to impose a uniform culture on its lands, with the warrior caste at the top. Pezzlian authorities suppress local zet culture.   The large coastal city of Skafatum (settled by the Husliq) used to be the capital of the Commonwealth, but lost that position as its neighbor Vomerro (settled by the Tummarand) grew. There remains a political rivalry between those two settlements, but most political offices alternate between the two dominant human cultures.

Demographics

In the Commonwealth, Husliq and Tummarand are the most numerous humans (around 30% apiece). There are a few Pezzlian (including zet) immigrants and refugees (around 5%). Tonttu and elf are the next numerous (Tonttu 18% and 15% elf). Dwarves are rare in urban settings (around 3%) but there are unknown numbers in the thick western forests.
In Pezzlio, the greatest majority of humans (over 80%) are Pezzlian (of that 80%, 12% are warrior caste, 88% zet). The true numbers of tonttu, elves, and dwarves are unknown but low.
