Dwarf

Written by Janto

Dwarves love nature and view themselves as the stewards of the natural world. They mainly dwell in the forest and wild lands of Orbis.   Dwarves were probably the first inhabitants of Ederim. Many of their original settlements housed both dwarves and fae creatures. After human cities expanded in the Sixth Age, dwarves abandoned their land and withdrew into the dense western forests and the fae faded into the Feywild. It's rare now to see a dwarf in a human city, but there are some who have turned their back on nature and embraced urban life among the tall folk.   Dwarven settlements are run by religious prophets called fáith (pronounced FETH). They make their homes in a grove of sacred ash trees called a doire fuinnseann (pronounced DOY-de fa-SOY-an). Druids and rangers hold privileged positions. A dwarven community is usually tasked with protecting and managing a specific landscape. Sometimes they worship Manes associated with local nature spirits.   They're also master brewers and vintners, often blending natural ingredients into special concoctions. Dwarven ale and wine are considered the best in Orbis and the beverage trade may represent the only connection a dwarven settlement has with the outside world. Traditional dwarven brewing involves digging a rectangular pit inside a crescent stone wall. The brewing takes place inside the pit and hot stones are used to heat the liquid. This arrangement is called a fulacht fiadh (pronounced FULL-ahk FEE-add).   There are three main ethnicities of dwarves in Orbis:   Forest Dwarf:  This is the most common dwarf in Orbis.  They have a range of skin tones and tend to be short and stocky.  Often, male dwarves entwine ivy and leaves through their beards as decoration.  (Comparable to hill dwarves)   Ice Dwarf:  Far to the north of the Commonwealth and south of the Kingdom of Pezzlio dwell the most private dwarves.  These light-skinned dwarves live in frozen wastes and eschew all connections with the outside world, including other dwarves. (Comparable to mountain dwarves)   Dark Dwarf:  Some dwarves live in the Underdark.  They are known to make allegiances with evil dragons, infernal creatures, and demons.  Their existence is only whispered by the other dwarves.  Forest dwarves will always attack dark dwarves when they find them (which is rare). (Comparable to duergar)
