Senatorial Legions

The armed force of the Palatine empire, the Senatorial Legions have been an integral part of Palatina since its founding over 700 years ago. In their heyday one of the most feared and highly regarded forces in the western half of the continent, the Senatorial Legions conquered lands uncounting in Khely and Valeny, subjected all the shores of the Palatin Sea to their dominion, and spread the emperor's dictat far and wide.

Today they are a diminished order, much as the empire in general, and in recent decades their might has been aimed at trying to hold on to what they can in the shrinking empire.

The legions have always been recruited from the Palatine core, as it is seen that the freeholders of the Palatine heartland and full Palatine citizens are the most loyal and have the most to gain from the legions' successes. Though allies and subjects have always served with the Palatines, most notably with the Sevestan armies, they have never been considered parts of the legions proper.

Culture

The legions are a crucial part of Palatine society, generally recruited from the freeholders of the Palatine countryside. The Palatines have historically had much of their peasantry serve in the army at one point or another, and have always seen military service as a place of duty and honor. Even now, as the Palatines have retreated from conquest and have not tasted victory as frequently as in their glory days, the legions remain a respected institution.

Befitting the name, the legions are led by the members of the senatorial class, who are meant to serve as officers and commanders in the legions before assuming their place in the senate in Atrans. In recent decades, as the legions have shrunk but the senatorial class has not, this has caused some difficulty as there simply aren't enough legions to accommodate all of the prospective senators.

'In recent decades, as the legions have shrunk but the senatorial class has not, this has caused some difficulty as there simply aren't enough legions to accommodate all of the prospective senators.' Oops. That could end poorly if they start to fight over leadership positions!

Ah yes, the armies of powerful empires eventually sink under the pressure of their own size. Lovely Article.
