Dr. Parks
Dr. Parks, born Victor Benjamin Parks, is the party healer of the delving party Second Chance and is played by FiddleStrixVT.
Description
Appearance
He stands at about 5'10", has blonde hair that's cut above his ears, and blue eyes that have seen too much.
When he was pulled to Skene, he was wearing a dirty doctor's apron, a loose fitting undershirt, dark pants, had his stethoscope, and his bag on him.
Once on Skene Dr. Parks wears a red tunic style shirt, tan pants, and usually wears his stethoscope around his neck. He also carries his medicine bag with him that contains all the base gear for treating and stabilizing wounds in a hurry.
Personality
Dr. Parks is usually reserved and doesn't say very much, choosing instead to speak with his actions, tending to lead with caution first and being prepared to help if the situation demands it.
After he feels comfortable around people, he starts to open up more. Among his colleagues on Earth, Dr. Parks is known to be incredibly kind, reliable, and thoughtful, often doing things for people before being asked for help. By his superiors, he is known for being very diligent in his duties as well as resourceful in a pinch. During his downtime, he will usually be the one reading a book, studying up on new breakthroughs in medicine, playing solitaire, or joining in conversation with insight and advice.
On the other hand, he finds it difficult to open up to people that he considers to be his patients, as that feels like crossing the doctor/patient relationship line. This makes his position in Second Chance strange, as his instinct is to keep his party members at arm's length, but knowing that they are also some of the only people on Skene that could possibly understand him. He has been very introspective since arriving on Skene, and usually spends his downtime alone, writing letters he cannot send to his parents.
Biography
Background
Dr. Parks grew up in a relatively poor family in a rural part of the United States. Before he entered high school, he lost his grandmother, aunt, and younger sister to preventable but expensive to treat illnesses. He dedicated himself to becoming the doctor that could have saved them, studying incredibly hard in high school and graduating with his both his high school diploma and associates degree, earning him a full-ride scholarship to the medical institution of his choice. He worked through his medical program and residency, often performing in the top 10 percent of the class. Once his residency was up, he volunteered for Doctors without Borders so that he could bring aid to impoverished people around the world. While there, he also fought for equitable wages for the doctors and staff on duty after he noticed a disparity.
Throughout his journey, he would always write letters home and call whenever he could, as well as sent everything that he had in excess payment back to his parents at home to help make their lives a little easier.
Dr. Parks had just finished setting a broken leg in a young boy and turned around to head to the next patient when he suddenly felt himself pulled to Skene.
Fame & Falchions Renatus: Act One
In Rx1 "All The World's A Stage" Dr. Parks shows up in the white room of Relocation Services of the Cosmos with the other members of Second Chance and can't tell if he's having a fever dream or not. He goes along with the rest of the group where they meet an angelic robot named Ophelia who tells them that they have been chosen, lays out rules for their stay on Skene, and tells them that The Lady of the Dark chose them. Ophelia also gives them a quick rundown of how Skene works. Dr. Parks is particularly concerned that the mundane healing knowledge of Skene is underdeveloped. After introductions, the only person Dr. Parks has any recognition of is Charleigh Thornton, current CEO of Thronton Group, a company which screwed over many of his patients. When they land on Skene, Dr. Parks starts collecting plants along their way to Kalden Village that look like they could be medicinal. When they find a body, Dr. Parks determines that he is far beyond saving, finds the dead adventurer's ID tag, and helps build the funeral pyre. When the party runs into Rose looking for Rockworms to help her friend, Dr. Parks takes an interest and learns what he can from Rose and her grandmother's notes. Rose gives Dr. Parks a censer as they make medicine for her friend together.
In Rx2 "That Which Feasts" Dr. Parks wakes up and determines that whatever this is, it is not a fever dream, and decides to make tea. After breakfast, Dr. Parks and Kayden O'Connor work together to clean up while Ame and Rose go to the storehouse. Later, the party goes to investigate a strange tree just outside the village and discover the belongings of a different person who was brought to Skene from Earth. When questions arise, Charleigh Thornton and Dr. Parks share a silent and awkward walk to get Rose, who fears that the party had left her behind, and the two of them do their best to reassure her. Later, the party fights a group of goblins, and then has a huge challenge while trying to fight That Which Feasts. Dr. Parks fights to keep people alive before they decide to flee towards Halorin Spire. Once there, Dr. Parks asks for directions, then sets up a surgery suite in a room that they get to help fix up Ame.
In Rx3 "Halorin's Spire" Dr. Parks has a nightmare about not being able to save his patients, then goes downstairs and gets a very strong shot of alcohol. He learns that the last doctor Renora could think of lived over 300 years ago and was from a place called Newark. He also gets some information about where to find Rose an apprenticeship. Later, Cain talks to Dr. Parks about the empty shotglass he noticed, and the two of them talk about moving forward and better nights. When the party goes to register, Dr. Parks finds out he has an affinity towards Light. After registration, Dr. Parks heads off on his own to find the places Renora mentioned for Rose to apprentice. He checks out Soot and Sage first and meets Old Merrik who tells him about how slave pacts are illegal in the city, but that they can't do anything about pacts made outside the city except choose to not do business with those that participate in the trade. Old Merrik says that he can sponsor Second Chance, giving Dr. Parks some Dust of Preparation. He also teaches Dr. Parks about herbal smoke pouches and offers to take Rose on with a good salary and good days off. Later, as Dr. Parks approaches Hearth and Herb, he runs into Kayden O'Connor who is trying to do the same task. There is a small discussion and Kayden O'Connor leaves, offended that Dr. Parks must think he's incompetent. Dr. Parks walks in to the establishment, gets a vibe that it would not be good for Rose and leaves immediately.
In Rx4 "Rent! Plan! Guide!" Dr. Parks tells the members of the party what he learned about Feroxia and the slave trade. After the group gets to Second Chance Manor and meets Kamani Mortayne, he asks her what she's actually mad about, then promises that the party will leave if they are unable to help her. After Flavay joins the group, Dr. Parks, Joey Circler, Charleigh Thornton, Cain, and Kamani go to the real estate office to secure the manor, where Kamani and Joey get into a fight that leads Kamani to shatter a vase that Joey and Dr. parks clean up. Later, Dr. Parks tries to write notes but fails, and instead starts composing a letter to his parents about the last few days. Rose comes to see if he's okay, but he tells her that she doesn't need to worry about him, and should instead focus on taking care of herself and helping Flavay.
In Rx5 "The Deeper One Delves" after he wakes up, Dr. Parks observes the party and takes mental notes of what's happening around him. After the events in the Second Chance Manor hidden basement, Dr. Parks goes with the rest of the party to The Moon Whisk where Lumera gives them coffee and pastries. Once the party gets to orientation at Halorin Spire Delver's Guild in, Dr. Parks asks Becky for what to expect, after which the party heads to Magistone Forge to get supplies. There, they run into Joey Circler and Dr. Parks takes him to get food and caught up to speed on delving. When the two return, Dr. Parks immediately attends to Pixie, who had a broken leg after Cinders' license attempt. Dr. Parks gives Ferry some money as well as directions to Soot and Sage, telling them to follow the directions they're given about taking care of the injury. As the two of them leave, Cain tells Dr. Parks that the minimum age for Delving is only 9, which he adds to the list of changes he wants to advocate for.
In Rx6 "Dungeon Bug" after the party spends a long time trying to figure out how to fight fantasy pill-bugs, Dr. Parks throws an elemental shard of fire at them to wind the encounter. Later, when they find bug honey, he identifies that it has medicinal properties. When the party meets the Dungeon Merchant, Dr. Parks recognizes that he's an old plague doctor from Earth.
In Rx7 "Secrets" Dr. Parks asks Lily if the rest of the world is taught what really happened during the Celestial War, which tips her off that the party is reincarnates. When they get to the next floor, Dr. Parks spends time writing down what he's learned so far in his journal. Then has some small talk with Cain.
In Rx8 "Revelations" Dr. Parks fails to recognize and treat a poison that Ame is afflicted with on the way to the boss fight, then does his best to keep the party alive through healing as the fight gets out of hand quickly. During the battle, when Charleigh Thornton declares that she won't let the boss scare her like her father did, Dr. Parks sees her in a new, less-conflicted light. After the fight ends, he determines that Ame still has a pulse despite being swallowed by the monster, but doesn't know if there is anything else he can do to help her. He takes an elixir to restore his magic and then heals who he can in the rest of the party. After Ame comes to, Dr. Parks notices a strange black spider webbing retreating back to her eye, then returns her eyepatch to her. After they turn in the bodies they recovered from the dungeon and had shawarma, Dr. Parks heads to his room to write a letter and compile the notes of what he saw in the dungeon. Shortly after, Kayden O'Connor gets Dr. Parks to come help Ame because she collapsed, and as he examines her he sees a reverse text box in her cursed eye. He gives her anesthetic to help the pain as that is all he can do for her.
