Cain
Cain, born Cain Adamson, is a human guardian and the party leader of the adventuring party known as Second Chance . He is played by GrayHaven
Description
Appearance
Cain is described as a tall, muscular, and imposing man. He has messy, silvery grey hair and light stubble with amber eyes and tan skin. His facial features are stern with a clear jawline and harsh nose.
Cain is typically seen wearing simple earthy tones. When expecting a fight, he wears a combat tunic with a red undershirt and metal pauldron. While around the house he wears simple shirts and sweatpants. He often also wears an apron while cooking.
Personality
Cain is stoic and level headed, though seems to care about the people around him. Very little seems to surprise him, as seen when he continued about his business upon hearing that magic is real and that he would be transported to a new world. Cain functions as a stable grounding presence for the party.
Despite his imposing demeanor, Cain often checks in on his party members and makes sure they have support if needed. He often displays a dry sense of humor, focused on wordplay and straight man routine. He also seems to make references to modern media and trends despite being the oldest member of the group. While he doesn’t seem to have any issues or hesitation when it comes to combat, he strives to avoid it whenever possible.
Biography
Background
Not much has been revealed about Cain’s past, though it has been hinted at by his interactions with Joey Circler that he was well known in less than legal spaces. What is known about Cain’s background is that he ran a neighborhood convenience store by himself for 5 years before being brought to Skene. He was a quiet staple of the community: treated his customers fairly, helped out with local neighborhood cleanups, gave extra candy to kids from the cash register on occasion, overall he was a standup guy as far as everyone was concerned.
Fame & Falchions Renatus: Act One
Reincarnation and Coming to Skene
At the beginning of the campaign, the party that would later become Second Chance awoke in an all white room. Upon leaving the room, the party met Gilbert who informed them that they were in the relocation area of the cosmos and were sent to a lecture hall for explanation. After waiting for a moment (and scolding Joey Circler for breaking an entire hand sanitizer dispenser from the wall), the party was met by a very tall mecha angel named Ophelia. She informed the party that they were brought here at the request of The Lady of the Dark, but she didn’t know why. She further explained that the party will be sent to the world of Skene and that they must remain together for one year, then The Lady of the Dark will meet them and explain why they were sent. The party is also informed that they may choose what afterlife their souls will be sent to at that time as well as to have their Heart’s Question answered.
The party is told about the various cultures and technologies on Skene as well as the 3 rules they must follow: No attempts towards world destruction, no assuming the mantle of the The Demon Lord, and that they are not allowed to kill another Other Worlder unless it is self defense. If any of those rules are broken, Ophelia herself will remove them. Ophelia recommends the party head for Halorin Spire before sending them to Skene.
The party is dropped in the middle of a forest just outside of Kalden Village where they meet Crem and Rose. Rose invites the party into her house and helps them adapt to the new strange world. Cain began to cook for the party and was joined by Joey who had nervously revealed that he knew “who he was.” Cain quickly and sternly shut down the conversation, telling Joey their past lives don’t need to follow them in their new lives. Rose had asked the party if she could accompany them to Halorin Spire, which the party agreed to unanimously. At the request of the party, Cain baked a cake for Rose as thanks for her help. Feeling overwhelmed with emotion, Rose went out on the front porch with Cain and Charleigh Thornton following. The two offer Rose encouragement and compassion as she shares her birthday was a week prior and no one was around to celebrate.
The Road to Halorin Spire
The next day, Cain awoke to find one of Joey’s cards in his pocket but it looks like he’s banging against a glass wall with the words “He’ll be back, we’re having a chat.” Cain seemed unperturbed by this fact and simply placed the card back in his pocket. Kayden O'Connor shares about his encounter with a strange and demonic looking creature the night before and the party are disturbed but continue with their plans to leave. In their preparation, they found a hidden bunker belonging to Rose’s father, who was also an Other Worlder, and brought her to see it before leaving.
On the road to Halorin Spire, the party faced their first encounter: a group of goblins fighting a much larger Wizoblin. Cain and Kayden convinced the Wizoblin, Gob Mckoy, to help them fight the other goblins. After an easy victory, Gob warned the party to watch out for That Which Feasts. Rose shares with the party that That Which Feasts is a creature that hunts and feasts upon anyone who has seen it at nighttime, the party deduces that the creature was likely the one Kayden had seen the night before and decided to travel through the night rather than wait. That Which Feasts stalked the party into the night and ambushed them, using invisibility and anti-healing to get the upperhand. Upon seeing Charleigh dropping in combat and seeing the rest of the party wasn’t far away from the same fate, Cain chopped down a large tree with a single sword slash as a barrier for them to escape.
The party reached Halorin Spire and were let in upon hearing they had survived an encounter with That Which Feasts. The tired party made their way to the Delver’s Guild, where they were greeted by a busty, large breasted, heavy chested, big tittied catgirl with a southern accent named Becky. As the party got ready to rest, Cain checked in with Charleigh about both falling in combat and taking a life.
Becoming Delvers
The next morning, the party explored the city for a few hours before going through guild registration. Upon leaving the guild, Cain noticed Dr. Parks had an empty shot glass next to him but waited until the others were occupied to ask him about it. The party made their way to The Pig Sty, where Cain and Charleigh shared an indirect kiss while sipping coffee. Cain then spoke with Dr Parks about the shot glass and the two shared an understanding of trauma and trying to move forward.
During the meeting with Becky, the group decided on the name “Second Chance” for a party name, as a representation of their own rebirth and improvement. During this meeting, Joey reappeared from his supernatural abduction in Cain’s lap, who remarked with a Santa Clause joke. During the affinity testing, Cain was revealed to have an affinity for Light, a fact that he was visibly surprised to hear. The party then proceeded to elect Cain as the leader, which he accepted but also seemed confused by.
As the party went into town to gather supplies with the agreement to meet up at @Rent! Plan! Guide! for housing, Cain, Joey, Charleigh, and Ame went to the Koilon Archive where they met the analytical Marcellus Varen. Using his experience as a store owner, Cain managed to haggle a lower price for the party’s streaming equipment and potential talks for a sponsorship at later ranks by bringing up the group’s survival of That Which Feasts.
At Rent! Plan! Guide! the party met with Leticia who informed them of various places to live, including an old definitely haunted manor that was available for purchase. Upon reaching The Hero’s House, the party found the manor covered in graffiti and were met by the initially hostile ghost, Kamani Mortayne. The party is invited in while Kayden elected to stay outside for a while. The remaining party steadily convince Kamani to allow them to stay in the house together, however she is fully won over by Kayden bringing in a former slave, named Flavay, he had freed while washing off the graffiti. While not excited about incurring the wrath of The Beast Lord Cain found Kayden’s willingness to do what was right even if it wasn’t easy to be admirable. Kamani informed the party they could stay under three conditions: She will allow no slavery in the house, she will instantly kill any demon she sees, and that we are not allowed to go into her room. The party agreed to the terms and she accompanied them back to Rent! Plan! Guide! to finalize the deal. While there, the party is then joined by Ansa, the Demon Lord’s Daughter that Joey had immediately fallen for previously and invited to stay with the group. The rest of the party went outside of the business to negotiate a peace deal while Cain finished signing the deed, he once again used his haggling skills to bring the price of the house down from 20,000z to 18,000z.
Later that night, Cain is seen alone in his room meditating. He contemplates the events of the past few days and expresses doubts in himself as leader and his affinity for Light.
The next morning, the party discovered a secret underground room in the backyard that even Kamani was unaware of (supposedly). They find the Dais of Knowledge with depictions of the original Hero’s Party that Kamani is magically unable to talk about. While there are six indentions in the dais, Kayden somehow created a magistone to place into the dais. A hologram of Amaranthia, the Lady of Flames, appears and explains the purpose of the dais is to aid the future heroes to find The Vestiges of the Six. She explains that Kayden has the Hero’s Spark, a power granted to one individual every generation.
The party then returned to the Delvers’ Guild for orientation and, unbeknownst to them, the orientation required a practical exam with the objective to receive an item from a 5th floor boss. Cain met with Ferry, a 14 year old boy who was the leader of The Cinders. He and his sister have been trying to become delvers for the past 4 years. Feeling concerned for the boy, Cain took the time to teach him stealth tactics. The party was 7th in line to test and were given some helpful advice from Becky to take the time and prepare for delving. The party took the advice and quickly looked up a walkthrough of the first 5 floors of the dungeon on their way to Magistone Forge to prepare. While preparing, Cain asked Ironlight about what he knew about the Vestiges, Ironlight didn’t know the term but was familiar with all of the items. He then stated that there were only 5 members of the original hero’s party.
While training in preparation for their first delve, Cain sees Ferry and Pixie turning from their exam with various injuries. While Dr Parks helped set Pixie’s leg, Ferry shared with Cain that the test required them to grab a scroll from a Plague Revenant and that the creatures honed in on whoever grabbed the scroll, but did not need to be defeated. Cain thanked Ferry for his insight and agreed with Dr Parks on giving them some money and sending them to Old Merrik’s for care.
At the front of the dungeon, the party are met by Lady Aozora, who informs them they are to grab an item from the West boss room and are allowed one question. Cain asked what creature is the boss and was told it was a Jubokko. Cain then spoke with Lady Azora about buying the Hero’s House and making sure they were being respectful of it, Lady Azora seemed pleased with the topic and shared how her husband had sought out the Sword of Light but never found it. He did, however, gain the Cannon of Darkness and currently offers it as a prize should someone beat him. The party is then met by a mysterious hooded figure named Sable who wished them good luck before they entered the dungeon.
The First Delve
The party goes into the first floor of the dungeon, which they were informed was filled with insectoid monsters with very little loot and that it was best to just rush to the exit. Upon finding the exit rather quickly, the party then learned the exit required three keystones scattered throughout the floor to open. The party quickly realized there were many items they had not considered to get for delving such as lockpicks and a compass. After fighting through multiple insect swarms, the party came across a cavern with a ledge that seemed to go up to a different floor. Cain found a pair of boots that have different effects based on what magistone is placed in it. Using an earth stone, he and Ame scouted ahead to the top floor where they found an entrance to a skeletal boss chamber. They quickly went back down to the first floor and the party elected to go another way.
While scouring the first floor, the party discovered a skeleton with a signet ring and a large cursed sword, Cain decided to bring the skeleton and sword with them through the dungeon in the hopes to resurrect the person afterwards. The party then found a Dungeon Merchant named Gundulperht Von Klaukkerstein who traded one of the keystones with them. The trade also brought up two potentially useful items as well as a dead body that could be resurrected, with the rules stating they could only bring one item with them. The party made the difficult decision to take the body as they made their way to the next floor.
On the second floor, the party actively avoided combat with the anthropomorphic dogmen while scouting the floor. This turned out to be a beneficial decision as the creatures were later identified as Kobolds, followers of the dead god Anu who became more helpful to the party as they gained more pieces of the royal armaments. At one point during this exploration, Joey held the scythe of the guardian of death which allowed him to see, presumably, the number of people a person has killed floating above their heads. Upon hearing this news, both he and Cain are visibly uncomfortable and refuse to elaborate before changing the subject. As the party continued on they learned common knowledge about the Celestial War that happened over 3,000 years ago that led to The Triarchy as well as The Demon Lord’s Curse. The party then met with the guardian of the floor, Lily, who provided more information about the Celestial War from the side of monsters. Supposedly, the gods of humanity killed all of the other gods which then re-classified their followers to “Monsters,” the goddess of creation supposedly argued for the monsters to be given their own continent to live peacefully but the other two parts of the triarchy voted to imprison them in dungeons instead. As the party was leaving the floor, Ame was suddenly faced with an intense choice by the remnant of Anu, Cain kneeled by her and provided grounding for her to make her own choice.
As the party left the floor, they came to a beautiful landscape known as the Realm of the Fallen where they met a Floral Spirit named Sako. Sako explained the realm is where all the inhabitants of the dungeon rest when they are not on dungeon duty and is only accessible to adventurers who were approved by a floor guardian. Sako explained that the realm would allow them to skip to the next boss floor when the party was ready.
As the party made their way to the West boss room and talked strategy, they heard muffled screaming from behind the door and charged in to see a young woman named Luretta Anthea being eaten by the Jubokko. Cain immediately rushed in and pried the Jubokko’s mouth open to try and save Luretta, only to then learn she was a part of the Jubokko all along as a lure. The party struggled with fighting Luretta who kept focusing on “wanting to eat the pretty ladies,” swallowing Ame in the process. The objectification led to Charleigh proudly declaring she would not let anyone bully and control her like her father did. After Kayden inspired Charleigh to keep moving forward after a missed hit, Cain successfully intercepted an attack against Charleigh and told her she was nothing like her father, hinting that he knew him personally. With the combination of inspiration and attack interference, the group provided Charleigh with an opening to land a devastating blow on Luretta.
Not wanting to go down without a fight, Luretta tried to swallow Cain, who managed to finish her off with an elemental shard and rescue Ame. As Cain defeated Luretta, a strange aura appeared around him that bent light and enhanced all of the colors in the area: shadows became pitch, his hair turned a shimmering silver, Ame’s hair appeared like sapphire, and the flames appeared brighter. Afterwards, the only thing left of Luretta was her magestone and a purified seed. The party rushed to make sure Ame was okay as she spoke with Umbra in her unconscious state.
After successfully finishing the exam, Second Chance returned to the guild with their loot and the fallen. They were informed that the skeleton belonged to I did not write this guy’s name down, who left a note telling the party they are his lifelong friends now (whether the party wants to be or not). The party then went to a shawarma place where they met the single greatest NPC of Skene, Shawarma Guy.
As the part returned home, Ame collapsed as genesis_creation.exe began, everyone ran into her room concerned as she laid there for minutes. Eventually she woke up with best boy Onyx. A knock was heard at the door and Cain went to find Becky was there delivering their licenses. In the middle of the night. Staring at parts of him very intently. Cain wished her goodnight and went to sleep.
Fame & Falchions Absolution:
Fame & Falchions Renatus: Act Two
Relationships
Joey Circler
Cain and Joey’s dynamic initially started with tension as Joey was terrified of Cain from his past and Cain was distrustful of anyone who knew anything about his past. While Cain still does not trust Joey, and frankly thinks he makes foolish decisions, he still looks out for him and ensures his safety as best as he can. The two share a comedic dynamic as Joey constantly acquiesces to anything Cain says out of fear while Cain simply asks Joey to help out with basic chores and housework.
Kayden O’Connor
Cain initially viewed Kayden as a careless wanderer but very quickly learned he was mistaken. Upon seeing Kayden willingly challenge slavers to save a stranger, Cain began seeing Kayden in a new light. Cain respects and even admires Kayden’s willingness to do what is right, even if it isn’t convenient.
Dr Parks
Cain has an admiration for Dr Parks and his care for other people. After seeing the empty shot glass and speaking with him, Cain recognized the eyes of someone who had seen death almost as often as he had. Cain views Dr Parks as a trusted comrade with a level head.
Ame
Cain views Ame as young and reckless, but overall endearing. He appreciates her exuberance even if it can lead to trouble. While Cain has not had many conversations with her yet, he is still focused on taking care of her along with the rest of the party. He seems to be one of the only people in the party that actually knows the games and anime she references.
Charleigh Thornton
Cain and Charleigh seem to have a close dynamic. Cain did not judge Charleigh based on her father and instead saw her as someone who had to put up an appearance of strength even when hurting. Cain actively reached out to Charleigh after their encounter with That Which Feasts and spoke with her about the difficulties of taking a life and letting her know he will be there if she wants to talk. (We’ll see just how much this section changes in episode 9)
