Mulettes

Tiny horse-like creatures that roam in herds across the tundra of central Tokaru.  The stand about 2 feet at the shoulders, and are rotund, their fore-feat are slender, with hooked claws used for uprooting plants as they graze, but their back legs are strong and enable them to spring into extremely fast speeds from a standing start in seconds.    Their muzzles are long with lips that enable easy grasping of grasses, and their long mule-like ears rotate constantly seeking for tell-tale sounds of predators.  They sport a shaggy tail that they use to keep flies and other pests at bay.   The Mulette's congregate in vast herds, consisting of  hundreds of individuals.  They can move at speed as a herd, almost like a school of fish or vast flock of birds as they change direction fast and in unison.

Ecology and Habitats

The herds roam the tundra of central Tokaru, keeping the fungal forests at bay.  They are the preferred prety of the Giant vultures of Tokaru, and the The Talons of Aetora and exploers of the Protectorates will each will send out the ocassional hunting party to fill their stocks.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Their diet consists of grasses and shallow root crops that grow across the tundra of central Tokaru.

Additional Information

Domestication

The original Motu bred some Mulettes in captivity, but the art was lost once they were dispossessed from the island of Tokaru.  The forces of the Protectorates are beginning to experiment with them as farmed meat.

The furs and leathers can be used as per any other best,

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

The herds of Mulettes are accompanied by flocks of small birds that eat the insects and grubs that are distubed by the herd's grazing.  They will also bee seen perched upon the backs of the Mulettes and help keep them free of other parasites such as fleas and ticks.
