Olha II Shiroko

Empress Olha II Shiroko

Olha ascended to the throne in 1050, after her mother, former empress Inna Shiroko, retired. She married her younger brother Yakiv Shiroko in the same year and in 1051 had her first and only child Taras Shiroko. In the peacetime in which she reigned, she focused her work on education within the military. Both she and Yakiv were murdered in an assassination plot orchestrated by their brother Andriy Shiroko in 1057.

Personal history

Olha was born in 1021 while her mother, Inna Shiroko, was being held in prison by Olha's grandfather, Ilya VIII Shiroko. Kariin Shiroko was able to convince Ilya VIII to allow Inna out of prison and into house arrest in order to take care of Olha in a more appropriate setting. There Olha was cared for by both her father Fedir Shiroko and Inna.   When she was two, her younger brother Yakiv Shiroko was born and Inna was permanently allowed outside of her cell to raise her children.   While she was growing up, she rarely saw her grandfather, who was fighting in the Fourth Great War through most of her childhood. Her lessons were mostly conducted through tutors, her parents, and her grandmother. She was brought up with her mother's desire for peaceful solution, but tended toward an interest in the military like her grandfather.   Her training in essence magic began directly after her Attunement Test, in which it was discovered that she was a pyr-esh. While she had a great deal of talent for magic, she was much more interested in mundane affairs and did not develop her skills as much as they could have been. Instead, she immersed herself in political science, something her grandmother encouraged greatly.   Her relationships with her siblings were stable enough and she was particularly close to Yakiv and Zora, her only sister. Rustem was much younger than her and they did not interact often, although they were friendly. Andriy was a nuisance to her, but she tried to be kind to him through the years.   When Ilya VIII died in 1032, Olha was thrust into the role of High Princess (tajanji), a role previously held by Inna as the heir. She was much older than children normally coming into the title as her mother did not become empress until Olha was 12. After this, she watched Inna end the war within a few months and spent more time with the returning veterans.   Her experiences with them led her to realize that many had dedicated themselves so much to the military that they had very few prospects for retirement and those who wanted to leave after the Fourth Great War had no other skills aside from combat.   When she became empress in 1050, after Inna's retirement, she married her younger brother Yakiv Shiroko. She also created a tsirin as was tradition, a slim, agile creature named Juana. After her ascension, she began programs to assist current and former military members with education. She set up the first imperial trade schools for veterans, along with continued assistance for their children.   In 1051, she and Yakiv had their first child, Taras Shiroko. He arrived premature at 30 weeks of age and Olha spent the next few months personally looking after him, which led to Yakiv taking over the main leadership of the empire. During this time, Inna helped Olha and Yakiv and once Taras was sure to survive infancy, Olha returned to her regular duties, although she and Yavik made a point to be involved in their son's upbringing as much as possible.   Over the next six years, she continued her work with military members and became highly respected by the human soldiers for her attention to their needs. She also expanded charity programs. These were funded by raised taxes on the nobility which were unpopular, but necessary to continue her goals.   In 1057, she and Yakiv planned a small trip, but their plans were delayed due to a heavy storm. When they were able to leave, the departed with a short good bye to their son. During the trip, they were ambushed by mercenaries sent by their brother, Andriy Shiroko. While Yakiv was the intended target, both were killed.   After their bodies were returned to the palace, they were given a spectacular funeral and Andriy assumed the throne. Both were buried in the family mausoleum on the grounds of the Gandenye

History

Olha and Yakiv grew up together, along with the other royal siblings. As per Shiroko Dynasty tradition, as the two eldest children, they were married just after Olha took the throne after their mother Inna Shiroko retired.   The two had a son together and raised him as much as they could despite the hectic schedule of ruling an empire.    They died together during an assassination attempt. The target had been Yakiv, but they were killed defending one another.

History

Olha liked her brother well enough, but sometimes saw him as an annoying younger sibling, especially given that he followed her around often. As they grew older, she found him a competent part of the Department of State Affairs and listened to his advice. She knew he was more fond of her than was normal even in the inbred dynasty line, but did not think his affection would lead to anything negative so never spoke of it with him.    Andriy was a shadow to his older sister throughout their childhood and in his late teens fell in love with her. He hated that she was going to marry Yakiv and tried to surpass him in any way possible. After the wedding, he kept close to her through his work for the empire. Ultimately, his jealousy toward Yakiv let to an assassination attempt that, unfortunately, let to Olha's death as well.

History

Olha and Yakiv had been trying to conceive an heir since before their marriage. Taras was born one year after they were married, but was premature (30 weeks). Due to this, she was away from court for several weeks personally caring for him rather than leaving the task to wet nurses or nannies. Through this, she developed a particularly strong bond with her son.   After Taras was able to be cared for as a normal royal baby, she separated herself from him during the day to continue ruling the empire, but made a point to take over his care during the evenings.   As he matured, mother and son were very close throughout the remainder of Olha's life. Unfortunately, she was murdered when Taras was six.   He still holds cherished memories of his time with her and visits her grave in the family mausoleum once every two weeks to be close to her.

Nicknames & Petnames

Olha began calling him 'fresh snow' (roadetsin uepa-> roh'ah'deht'seen oo'eh'pah) due to his premature birth and inherited white hair (family trait). As he grew older, the nickname was shortened to 'tsinpa'.   Taras referred to his mother as dictated by Eoin royal family social rules, calling her 'majesty' (zasheka) or 'lady mother' (tayúova -> yúova meaning 'mother' and 'ta-' being a prefix used to denote a high status) when in public. In private, he called her 'mommy' (ova).
