Inna I Shiroko

Empress Inna I Shiroko

Inna (reign 1032-1050) was responsible for the end of the Fourth Great War. She retired soon after the end and handed the empire to her oldest daughter, Olha. In her retirement, she took up gardening and became a point of stability and magical education for her grandson Taras Shiroko I.

Personal history

Inna was born in 983 before her father Ilya VIII Shiroko and her mother Kariin Shiroko were married. As they were going to be married anyway, Inna was still considered the heir despite her early birth and for most of her early life, the empire was a peaceful place. Like her siblings and other royal Shiroko children, she learned a great deal about magic, particularly stitching.   Between all of her siblings, she became like a second mother to them and often acted as a point of settlement during disputes among the royal and noble children. During this time, she also studied under her father in preparation for her to rule the empire one day. He was much more aggressive than herself, however, and she disliked his approach to diplomacy, a strategy which ultimately led to the Fourth Great War, beginning in 1015 when she was 32.   While the war went on, she tried to get into contact with the royal family of Yzel in order to broker a deal between the two countries. Her attempts were unsuccessful when Ilya VIII discovered her dealings and had her imprisoned. He was going to have her killed, but was stopped by her younger brother Fedir Shiroko and her mother. While under arrest, she continued to write letters to Yzel, which Fedir helped sneak out of the Golden City.   Ilya refused to retire as would be normal when the heir was in their late 20s to early 30s and as emperor, no one could force him to step down. However, Kariim convinced him to allow Inna and Fedir to be married in 1021. Two months later, their first child, Olha, was born and between 1023 and 1031 they had four more children: Yakiv, Andriy, Zora, and Rustem. Despite their children, she continued to live under house arrest until her ascension.   After Ilya VIII's death in battle (1032), she was freed from imprisonment and coronated at the age of 50 once her mother retired directly after her father's death. She immediately began working out a peace deal with Yzel with the full authority of Eoion behind her.   Her success ended the Fourth Great War and she was given the moniker "Peacemaker" for her work.   After her retirement in 1050, at age 67, she passed the title of empress on to her oldest daughter Olha and attended the wedding of Olha and Yakiv. For two years, she remained in the Gandenye to assist with the transition and subsequently acted as an advisor to her children. In 1052, one year after the birth of her grandson, Taras Shiroko, she retired to one of the winter palaces in the northeastern area of empire, near Sori Ilaz.   Upon Olha and Yakiv's deaths in 1057, she attended the coronation of her second son, Andriy and attempted to gain custody of Taras due to her suspicions that Andriy had been involved in Olha and Yakiv's deaths. However, as Andriy was emperor and held more power, she failed, resulting in her exile from the Golden City in retaliation for what Andriy saw as an attempt to undermine his new authority. She was instead able to negotiate with him an agreement stating he would have no children who would compete for the throne later and she would be able to see her grandson once every other year for two weeks.   She remained on good terms with the rest of the royal family despite the friction between her and Andriy and in her free time, she became an avid gardener. When her grandson was visiting, she noticed something was going wrong with him, but could never convince him to tell her, which only furthered her suspicions and distaste toward Andriy. On meeting Erasure, she was happy that her grandson had someone protecting him. Although she did not completely approve of their growing romantic relationship, she did not interfere, assuming in the end Taras would marry a cousin as normal. Rather than interfere in the budding romance, she instead took Erasure under her wing as a second grandson and, when he told her of Taras's growing mental instability, she showed him the book used kept by the Shiroko ancestors detailing treatments. She left this book to him in her will.    Her death in 1068, at the age of 85 was met with mass mourning and three days of funerary celebrations. After the cremation ceremony, her ashes were interred in the Shiroko family tomb inside the Golden City.

History

As Andriy's mother, Inna raised him from childhood, although she was not as present as his father, Fedir, due to her position as empress. After Olha and Yakiv's deaths, she suspected her second son of involvement in the murders, but had only conjecture. His fierce opposition to allowing Taras to spend time with her, and the subsequent fear and strange behavior her grandson exhibited while with her further deteriorated their relationship as she believed Andriy was abusing Taras, but could do very little to stop it.   Andriy respected her as his mother when he was a child and into his early adulthood. However, after Olha and Yavik died, her suspicions regarding his involvement and subsequent behavior with Taras let him to exile her from the Gandenye. Their relationship never improved and they only spoke when absolutely necessary until Inna's death.

History

Erasure met Inna while traveling with Taras to visit her. Due to the falling out between her and Andriy Shiroko, Inna was only allowed to see her grandson at very specific times. Over the years, the two developed a surrogate grandmother-grandson relationship, particularly as Inna noticed how attached Taras was to Erasure. She was happy her grandson had a friend.   Inna was the first person Erasure told about the instability he saw in Taras and Inna assisted him in finding methods to help. She also acted as a confidant for him despite his status as a slave and hers as a former empress.   When she died, she left him a journal containing all of her notes regarding her great uncle Dmitri Shiroko's similar illness and the treatments her parents and siblings had used to help him.
