Helkryvt Moothvaler (a.k.a. Necrovar)

Helkryvt is a human who lived during the Second Age. Sired by a chieftain who could wield earthmagic, and a dragon speaker who could wield airmagic, watermagic, and firemagic, Helkryvt was born with the rare ability to wield all four of the base magics.
This, compounded with his power level as a Tier Eleven wielder, a mage, made him a target. In those days it was common practice for mages to be marked so everyone would know what they were and what sort of power they wielded. Helkryvt's father, Keirwyn, fearing what the tribesmen might do if they discovered the extent of his power. In a misguided effort to protect him, Keirwyn banished Helkryvt from the Moothvaler Tribe when he was only six years old.   Despite his young age, Helkryvt survived on his own, first in the wilderness, then traveling from one human city to another. His unprecedented wielding abilities, mastery of all four of the base magics, and above-average intelligence gave him an edge that few possessed. He quickly learned to hide the extent of his powers, and remained undetected for years.   Eventually Helkryvt's travels led him to the Araxi Tribe, led by female chieftain and dragon speaker Beledine Arowey. There he stayed, pledging his loyalty to Beledine, for he loved her as soon as he met her, and felt at home with her as he never had anywhere else.   Helkryvt was jealous, however, jealous of the bond between Beledine and her dragon, Ghokarian Equilumos. He grew paranoid, believing that Beledine loved Ghokarian more than she loved Helkryvt. Bitter with resentment and growing rage, Helkryvt's negative feelings festered until they came to a breaking point. In a fit of fury, he murdered Ghokarian and Beledine, and killed many of his fellows of the Araxi Tribe.   Taking advantage of Helkryvt's vulnerability then, Necrovar appeared to him and offered him an alliance. Necrovar promised that if Helkryvt provided a mortal body and soul, Necrovar in return could provide him with power beyond imagining. Helkryvt agreed, and it was that night that Necrovar fused itself into Helkryvt's soul, and Helkryvt became its mortal vessel. Historians point to this moment as the unofficial beginning of The Great War, and mark Ghokarian as its first casualty.

Personal history

During the Second Age, the world was in a constant state of conflict, despite the best efforts of bonded dragons and their mortal counterparts. The Moothvaler Tribe, a nomadic people based in the middle of the modern-age Smarlands, came under attack when Helkryvt was four years old. During the attack, Helkryvt's mother, Ythra, and her dragon, Seriath, flew forth. Young Helkryvt begged her not to leave him, but she refused to abandon her people. Leaving Helkryvt hidden, where the attacking bandits wouldn't find him, Ythra and Seriath went to do battle.   In the ensuing fight, Ythra was killed. Her death drove Seriath mad with grief, and the dragon abandoned the Moothvaler Tribe. Helkryvt watched the whole battle unfold from his hiding spot, and saw his mother fall and Seriath flee. This fostered within him a deep resentment and hatred -- resentment that Ythra chose her tribe and Seriath over Helkryvt; and hatred that Seriath had so changed and warped his mother.   This anger fueled Helkryvt's powers, and his magic began to spike and flare. It was then that Keirwyn began to understand the extent of his son's power, and fear for his safety. By the time Helkryvt was six, and the tribesmen had begun to fear him and scorn him for his ill temper, Keirwyn decided there was no choice but to banish Helkryvt from the tribe.

Education

Helkryvt never received formal schooling for his wielding abilities -- he taught himself everything he knew. Since he was unrestrained by power levels or the types of magic he wielded, and since he was uncommonly bright even at a young age, Helkryvt began to make up his own spells. He experimented with his magic during the two years he spent wandering the wilderness on his own. By the time he was eight, and desperate enough for human contact that he dared approach a mortal city and beg to be taken in, Helkryvt's self-learned wielding knowledge had surpassed that of many renowned mages.   In the human city of Yost, Helkryvt was put to work in the growing fields in exchange for shelter and protection. The city was large enough that there were some depositories of scrolls there, guarded by learned men, and Helkryvt sought them out, thirsty for more knowledge -- for he believed knowledge was power. The learned men taught him to read, and soon Helkryvt had read every scroll in Yost by the time he turned ten.   With nothing left to learn in that city -- and with the Yosti Tribe growing suspicious of Helkryvt's seemingly bottomless mine of magical energy -- Helkryvt returned to his nomadic roots and began traveling again. He walked west, passing through the wastes and the mountains, stopping at every mortal city where he could trade work for shelter. By the time he was fourteen, he had gone so far west that he had come back east, and found that he had returned full-circle to the land of his birth and origin. During the intervening years of his travels, he had studied highly advanced scrolls written by bonded mages, and he understood more about the science of magic than most humans.

Mental Trauma

Along with the trauma of his mother's death, his father's betrayal, and Seriath's abandonment of the Moothvaler Tribe, Helkryvt grew up with a threat hanging over his head due to his immense power. As a mage whose abilities had manifested and blossomed at an early age, Helkryvt was always at risk of being discovered by his fellow tribesmen. If they ever found out he was a mage, they would brand him as such: cutting his cheeks and smearing acidic evasdrin tar in the wounds so they might turn pitch-black and never heal through either natural or magical means.   Though Helkryvt was never afraid of the tribesmen or this potential danger -- knowing himself to be more powerful than any of his brethren -- it made for a hostile and tense environment. The knowledge that he would be punished for his gifts rankled with him, and the fact that he had to hide his natural-born talents infuriated him.   As if all of this was not enough, Helkryvt's close contact with his mother and her dragon began to change him. When he was three, his eyes lightened from shiny obsidian to a dull, dark purple. Neither Ythra nor Seriath had ever seen such a phenomenon or heard of it, and Ythra began to fear for Helkryvt. It was then that she began to pull away from her son, to keep him at arms' length, and far from either her or Seriath. She feared he was forming some sort of magical bond to the dragon through her, and did not know what sort of consequences it might bear. She never explained this to Helkryvt, and he was left to believe that she simply no longer loved him.   The change in his eyes only caused a greater divide between him and the tribesmen. Though his eyes remained a dark and subtle purple for years, they began to grow brighter the more he pushed his magic to the limit, the stronger he grew. People often mistook him for a dragon speaker without a dragon, which caused distrust and sometimes panic in the mortal settlements he passed through. He could, therefore, never truly find anyone who understood him or who wanted to befriend him.
