Wielding

"Wielding" is a term used to describe the process of a sentient living creature harnessing energy from within its soul to affect its external environment.   All living creatures on Selaras are born with wieldable magic in their souls. Creatures of a certain level of intelligence can access their souls -- also referred to as "magicsources" -- and are able to wield the energy stored there. A wielder is typically defined as a living organism that is able to wield one or more of The Twelve Magics.   Like all physical tasks, any act of magic exacts a price of energy. When a wielder uses their magic to accomplish a task, that energy is dredged out of their soul. And as with any physical exertion, expending energy takes a toll on the wielder. Energy within one's soul may be replenished in all the ways a physical body might recover: by eating, drinking, and sleeping. If a wielder completely exhausts the energy in their source, it will generally take a little less than three days to recover their ability to wield, and even longer for the energy in their source to return to full capacity.

Manifestation

Wielding harnesses energy at a molecular level, so the individual strands of molecular energy (called "threads" or "magicthreads") are invisible to the naked eye. However, most magical spells are meant to manipulate or create something in the wielder's environment, so spells will manifest with their physical repercussions, whether that is to move a rock from one place to another, or to create a thunderstorm in the heavens above.
