Humans are the most populous and most intelligent of the mortal species descended from lifemagic.   With lifemagic as their core power, humans have the ability to wield any of the four base magics: airmagic, earthmagic, firemagic, and watermagic. Magic is passed down through both parents' bloodlines, and as such an individual human may be able to wield multiple base magics (or all of them).   Modern-age humans first appeared about 10,000 years ago, in the Age Before Ages. They split from their genetic ancestors, a hominid mortal species called troglodytes, when they became more intelligent, and therefore also more powerful wielders. The rise of humans ultimately led to the extinction of the troglodytes, who could no longer compete with their cousins for territory, game, or freshwater sources.   The extinction of the troglodytes spurred humans to greater heights, and emboldened them to expand. Humans grew brave enough to approach the dragons, the dominant species of the planet, in search of an alliance. Though the dragons were emotionless and impartial in those days, it transpired that prolonged contact with mortal creatures allowed them to forge magical bonds with the lesser beings. Thus were forged the first alliances between individual dragons and humans.   This affiliation with the dragons again propelled humans to new and greater heights. Bonded dragons shared information and intelligence with their human bondmates, and this allowed humans to make great strides in wielding, infrastructure, healing, science, and even political organization. Humans clumped together, grew more populous, and the first cities were wielded into existence. This era was known as the Golden Age, and lasted for a thousand years before the mortal races of Selaras agreed upon a uniform timekeeping method. This marked the beginning of the modern age, and the beginning of recorded mortal history, and humans called it the First Age.
