The Etherworld

The Etherworld is an alternate dimension created by the gods of Selaras at the end of The Great War. Using energy unraveled from the soul of Valerion Equilumos, they wove a spell of epic proportion -- a spell designed to imprison Necrovar in a place where he could no longer hurt their world.   The spell, however, went awry. Instead of only imprisoning Necrovar and his followers, it also claimed the creatures whose power was the equal and opposite of his: the Dragons. When the gods' spell was complete, not only had Necrovar's legions been claimed, but every single living dragon had also been pulled into the Etherworld. There they would all remain for another seven-thousand years, until the Twelfth Age and the beginning of The Shadow War.   Several other species were also caught in the crossfire of the gods' spell and unjustly imprisoned in the Etherworld. These were creatures of either draconic or demonic origin, whose power balanced, rivaled, or complimented either Necrovar's or the dragons' own abilities.   After their imprisonment in the Etherworld, the balance between The Twelve Magics was torn asunder. With many of the wielders of higher magics lost, those who remained on Selaras found themselves vastly weakened. And with the dragons gone, the overall power of magic ebbed away. Some of that strength has been regained genetically over the past ten ages, but modern-age wielders are stunted and weak compared to the power their ancient ancestors once held.
