The Twelve Magics
There are twelve fundamental forces that make up all the mass and energy in the Universe. These may be classified into three groups: the four base magics, consisting of elemental power that creates life; the four higher magics, consisting of the more enigmatic forces that stitch the fabric of spacetime together; and the four arcane magics, most powerful and most mysterious of all.

Valemagic Wielding is the art of manipulating magical energy to affect change in the world. There are two basic subsets of wielding: manipulation magic, and creation magic. Manipulation is the easier of the two, since it makes use of pre-existing materials in the physical world. Creation is much harder, as it requires pulling energy from a wielder's own soul in order to create something new. There is a classification system that mortals use to denote different power levels of wielding ability. This classification system is known as the Tier System, and ranks mortals' power on a scale from one to eleven. Tier One magic wielders are the weakest on this scale, while Tier Eleven wielders, known as mages, are the strongest. Though mortals are segmented into tiers, the gradation of power itself is more fluid, on a sliding scale. At a certain level of power (Tier Six and higher), mortals gain the ability to wield creation magic. Tier Nine wielders and higher can access the core of their power, the arcane magic that powers them -- be it lifemagic, timemagic, or changemagic -- which grants them certain metaphysical abilities, including healing, telepathy, and longevity. Tier Eleven wielders are granted still more expanded ability. This is the most powerful class of wielder a mortal can be, approaching godlike skill at the upper reaches of the tier. There is a Tier Twelve, but this tier is reserved for gods alone. They are in a class onto themselves, for they wield valemagic.

Manifestation
Each magic manifests physically in the world. Magic is manipulated at the molecular level, and wielders can draw strands of molecules, or "threads", out of their sources to either affect their surroundings or create something new in their environment.
Powerful wielders can see these discreet strands of energy, which makes it easier for them to weave spells. Most of the population, however, cannot see magicthreads, and so the magic itself is, in essence, invisible. It is no more than the transference of energy, energy that moves through a living being and out into the world. The result of wielding, however, will become evident once a spell is complete. The weaving of a fire spell may be invisible to the naked eye, but it will manifest in a flame once the wielder completes the weave. The same is true for all the base magics and higher magics, although often the effects of arcane spells are still invisible, and therefore will not physically manifest at all.
