Though dragon speakers, or rheenarae, once roamed the land in past and better ages, they died out when the dragons themselves were imprisoned in the Etherworld at the end of The Great War.
Ten ages passed before another dragon speaker was made. This was Keriya Soulstar, whose brief but momentous contact with the dragon-god Shivnath turned her into the only rheenar in the world.
The manifestation of Shivnath's magic in Keriya's soul turned the human's eyes purple; this signaled to anyone with a basic grounding in Allentrian history exactly what she was. When she was discovered by Empress Aldelphia Alderwood, the ruler of Allentria conscripted Keriya into the battle against Necrovar's return. Thus was Keriya pulled even deeper into political conflict, and thus was she officially made part of The Shadow War.

Transmission & Vectors

One can only become a dragon speaker via direct contact with a dragon. Modern-age dragons are able to form magical bonds with sentient mortal creatures, and this binding of one soul to another allows the two bondmates to share thoughts, emotions, and even magic.

Causes

A dragon speaker is made when the bond is formed; in connecting to the dragon's soul, they are connected to the dragon's magic, and this particular magic manifests its presence physically by changing the color of its host's eyes.
