Kren Walters was the general commanding the Araterre Army when it conquered the Orcish nation that ruled the area where Port Karn is today, over 800 years ago. The Walters family has been ruling the barony ever since. Kyran became Baroness when her father died in a shipwreck off the coast near the city of Oar, on the northeastern coast of the Empire. She was 19. She has since consolidated her power, married Bronn Kreide's younger brother Sten, and managed to keep the city of Port Karn under control. She and Sten have no children as of yet; she suspects Sten is shooting blanks. She is looking into alternatives.
