Lord Derwyn is the current Patriarch of House Numaness.
Derwyn is a exceptional negotiator and politician. That why he was able to become the Patriarch.
He is a reasonably competent strategist and used to be a formidable fighter in his youth. He is not afraid of war but prefers to fight with the pen rather than the sword.
While very charismatic, he is only a mediocre manager, finding the minutiae of running a realm somewhat tedious, but fortunately has talented underlings he can delegate these tasks to.
He is famously elitist and is disliked by most of the commoners. He is also a very staunch traditionalist with genealogy, favoring those with the blood of the four founding dragons and being generally opposed to mixing their royal blood with wild mages and random half-dragons.
He frequently butts heads with Gwendolyn ap Numaness. She is a queen and he is only a count, but technically she is supposed to defer to him on purely family members of House Numaness.
Their biggest point of contention is that Queen Gwendolyn wants to bring in many half-dragons to revitalize the bloodlines which flies in the face of Derwyn's notions of blood purity.
Their second point of contention is that Derwyn believes the Queen compromises too much of House Numaness' power away in the name of short term ambitions. In other words, she focuses too much on the realm as a whole and not House Numaness specifically.
Derwyn actually believes the Queen's military ambitions to annex Fumaya are a good idea, but he is pretending to be ambivalent towards it, so he can try to shake concessions out of her, mainly pushes through the arranged marriages that he wants.
