Lore Rundown

Lore Summary

Prehistoric Phase
The World Snake and The Canticle of Ouroboros
At the dawn of the Universe, Ouroboros the World Snake gathered the chaos and shaped it into a brilliant blue and green planet. She sang a song as she worked, The Canticle of Ouroboros, accompanied by the flumphs. The World Snake created the flumphs to transmit her will across creation, forming her melody into reality. Her intense labor left her exhausted, so Ouroboros curled up around her percious creation and drifted into a dreamy sleep. While The World Snake slumbered her world changed and evolved. The ample precipitation and abundent flora made the planet a perfect place for reptilian creatures created in her image. Powerful dinosaurs strode across the verdant landscape, and the Yuan-Ti rose from primitive creatures to become the dominant species over the eons. Ouroboras' world was the envy of many of the Universe's other deities. The sleeping snake was aware when other gods, including the sires of the dwarves and elves brought their children to the world. Soon the jealous gods began to war over control of the planet, and at the height of the conflict one of their number was struck down and crashed into the surface of Ouroboros' masterwork. The results were catastrophic; fire storms swept through the lush forests filling the air with sun-blocking smoke. The Yuan-Ti Wizard-Scientists rushed to preserve their civilization in gigantic hibernation vaults, the dwarves weathered the destruction in the fastness of their underground lairs, and the elves slipped across the veil into the Feywilds. The gods' corpse survived intact, buried in the depths of a mountain range created by its violent arrival. The deitiy's blood was cast throughout the world, solidifying into a substance that would become known as Prima Materia.   Unable to awaken, Ouroboros dreamed of a rejuvenated planet, creating new life in the wake of death. Over the millennia that passed, the world healed itself and mammals rose to dominance. In the era of Scardona, The World Snake still sleeps, but her children, the Yuan-Ti, awaken from their long hibernation. The legendary Canticle of Oroboros has been rediscovered, a song that can wake The World Snake. If properly performed it is believed that the creation goddess can imbue the performers with her great power to overcome a dire threat. However, wielding the power of a divine creature will likely destroy any mortal. The power of The Song of Creation should not be invoked lightly.
The Graecians and the Historic Era
King Acastus ruled the Graecian Empire nearly 2,000 years ago. His empire stretched over three continents and was the richest of the Golden Age. Acastus used his wealth to build cities and make war, but he also secreted it throughout his empire. Acastus sent 4 trusted lieutenants to the Scardona area to build a secret Vault.
  • Tellias the Architect drew plans for the vault and its surrounding facilities
  • Krantor the Engineer created automaton guards and machinery so spectacular that it could be used to move rooms if not entire levels
  • Lyra the Warrior provided protection for the construction sites and the town that was used to receive shipments from Graecia.
  • Philoteus the Physician-Mage oversaw the project, using his fellow lieutenants’ designs to create the final Vault. The others did not know the final configuration of the Vault of Acastus. It took 25 years to complete the Vault and The Three Brother facilities. The craftsmen and laborers were sent to other projects, but the Lieutenants retired in the area.
  • Two years after the project finished, the city came under attack from the Eternal Night Vampire Clan. The voracious bloodsuckers rampaged through the area, and Lyra’s troops struggled to hold them at bay. Philoteus devised a desperate cure, comprised of holy light and Prima Materia, a strange form of matter found in the area. He injected the lieutenants and citizens with the cure. Vampires that bit the vaccinated were destroyed by the compound. The Eternal Night Clan was driven back into the mountains to the north, thought they vowed revenge. As the centuries passed the Graecian Empire fell to the Imperium Romani who renamed the city Scardona. Five hundred years ago, northern barbarians razed Scardona and it became a mere shell of its former imperial glory.
    Phase 0
The Duergar were persecuted and attacked by their Dwarven brothers for their worship of Abatthor, the dwarven god of greed. Torgus Ironmantle, their leader, led a massive war against the dwarves to avenge the loss of his family. With the discovery of the dead god's corpse and Prima Materia, they would become victorious. The traditionalist dwarves would be forced to live amongst the Duergar. Seeing their kingdom ruled by their mortal enemies. Knowing of the Grecian's falling, the Duergar would use Prima Materia cautiously and begin to amass power slowly. From the Prima Materia they discovered the full corpse of the dead god. A plan was enacted, to use great magics to resurrect and enslave the dead god to their whim. All they needed with enough Prima Materia, and a conduit. They would need a Godling, a creature descended from the gods, to power their ritual. So they searched the world, kidnapping children with the potential to become Godlings to find the perfect conduit for their plans.
The Empire from across the ocean began colonization of the continent. Naming the lands the Resolute Coast, they set up colonies across the coast, eager to take the resources of the newest addition to their empire. The most important of them being the city of Scardona, which would soon attract adventurers from across the universe.
Portals across the Resolute Coast begin to form. Attracting the attention of The Horizon Walkers, a group dedicated to maintaining the universe's stability. With the help of the witch Maeve, they begin monitoring and eliminating portals around the continent.
    Phase 1
A ham-roast held at Scardona's tavern attracts a motely group of adventures. After a brawl in the streets with the local gangs, the adventurers begin to adventure together. One of them being Sir Reginald Rabbit, a fairy tale hero come to life from the godling Victoria. The heroes delve into the Feywild to help Reginald save Victoria from a vile creature who had taken her for her power. Reginald, seeing the potential in the heroes and the need for organization, founds H.A.R.E. or Heroic and Respectable Explorers. As more members join, the adventurer's influence grew. Together they would uncover the secrets of the Grecians, which came to a climax with the Raid on the Tomb of Acastus.
However, their adventuring garnered the ire of the Duergar after a fateful adventure in the Mithral Mines, the first conflict between Scardona and the Duergar.
Finally, the adventurers were tricked into breaking into Dragon Mountain, a mountain that had sealed away the dragons of the land. With the assistance of Maeve they held off hordes of dragons. But not before their leader, Airva the Ancient, swore revenge against Scardona.
    Phase 2
Conflict between the Duergar and Scardona grew. More fights between the groups broke out. The adventurers discovering the vile experiments of the Duergar, and unveiling their plot to resurrect and enslave the dead god. War was declared, and Scardona scrambled to prepare itself for invasion. Through diplomacy Airva was convinced to leave both parties alone, leaving her to her own devices. Constable Shem Kersk of Scardona also begins to campaign during this time, claiming that the current Mayor of Scardona is incompetent.
War broke out, the Duergar bore down upon the town of Scardona. Scardona was victorious, but at a horrifying cost. Thousands were dead, including the extinction of an entire orc clan after a tactical blunder by adventurers. Reginald was killed, bravely defending his lady until the bitter end. The city was left in ruins, and the Duergar's influence had only grown in power. Leadership was needed, which would come in three figures.
Constable Shem Kersk was elected mayor after the death of the previous mayor. Lykus Ocelot, a mysterious and silver tongued stranger, was elected the leader of HARE. And Lady Cosima, a duchess of the Empire, would come to assist in rebuilding Scardona. These three would be responsible for many of the shady dealings of HARE. Assassinations, necromancy, treason, and other crimes were led by these three. Slowly the population of Scardona would lose faith in the adventurers, and outrage was growing.
    Phase 3
The city was sick of the adventurers treating them like a problem to be spent away. Hatred was growing in the streets, which would culminate in the murder of Vincent Olsen, the Worker's Guild leader and supporter of HARE. Things would only get worse when it was discovered HARE was using the zombified remains of Scardona residents to rebuild their guildhouse. This outrage would fuel the Sons of Chains, a gang of disenfranchised youth with a burning hatred for adventurers. Right at tensions were at their peak, Lykus was murdered. Killed by a veteran adventurer Aerdon. With the power vacuum Shem Kersk quickly took over, using a trial of adventurer Akiva to take over HARE for himself. Many adventurers left, creating a keep in Haven's Light.
Meanwhile, in the Feywild, the King of Stories found the soul of Reginald and sold it to his brother. A group of heroes ventured in the Feywild in search of his soul. Seeing the King of Stories' kingdom in disarray, they pieced together the First Poem for him. Swayed by its beauty, the King of Stories realized his mistakes and swore to redeem himself. He showed the adventurers the way to his brother, the King of Chords, so they could save Reginald. After an explosive battle, the adventurers saved Reginald. The King of Chords begged his brother to save him, but the King of Stories was weary of his abuse and killed him instead. The King of Stories swore allegiance to Scardona when the Duergar returned.
Meanwhile, an ancient evil had awaken deep beneath the earth. The Toll King was released from his tomb by Lykus Ocelot. He toyed with the mortal realm, slowly amassing power for his grand return.
    Phase 4
Now the adventurers search for allies, artifacts, and anything that can help them with the impending invasions. History is being written, only brave adventurers like you can help save Scardona.
