The Roost

"War is a cycle and an addiction. We need not succumb to their brutality to use it for our benefit."

--Kenan'thar the Dominator, when the first dragon became a slave to the Empire, in 288 AB.

The Roost is a seaside city overlooking the Dark Ocean, at the eastern edge of the known world. It is for many the last stop of civilization when circling the coasts of Evandyr eastward. It is built on a natural peninsula, forming docks on all sides where the chief export and production of the city is either shipped or put to work. This export is living beasts or materials from beasts that live no longer.   Owlbears. War Dragons. Salamander eggs. Basilisk oil. Why hunt down the beast repeatedly for such things when one can capture it, breed it, and have an infinite supply? Many of these such creatures are the Lost Brothers of Avernus, beings of the First Jeriec Empire that succumbed to the bestial nature that is the call of Avernus. The Empire tames and trains them, and utilizes them all to better the Empire. Even the Avernal Demons can be utilized, but this is usually for gladiatorial sport, alchemical ingredients, or to be controlled and thrown into an immediate battle.
--Tamed beasts of burden, war, terror, manufacturing, companionship, and enlightenment all exist in the Second Jeriec Empire, and it is in the Roost that they are bred.
The Drake Campaigns of 262-290 AB founded the Roost. These Campaigns were a military offensive of the Empire against a cabal of Dragonscribes. This cabal believed that the instructions of the Storyteller were to use the power of the Themes to return the Story to it's proper course. At first this was through powerful ritual and moving of magical resources, but then their efforts shifted to unmaking the Empire. This caused a swift offensive from the Empire to eradicate these Dragonscribes.   Kenan'thar the Dominator was a cold, tactical, and perhaps even sociopathic commander who organized the successful capture and enslavement of one of these dragons. Kenan'thar frequently desired to capture strange creatures and find a way to use them to better the Empire. Though the Empire had been capturing and using beasts of Jeria for hundreds of years, this was a more dangerous case. He decided to house the more unruly of these creatures he captured in a large cage/prison complex on the eastern coast of Jeria. Known as the Roost, this complex over the centuries contained more and more beasts of all sorts, and grew into a city with the number of Jerians required to house them, and to produce the resources for their own needs.   Dragons were later tamed and bred and raised from birth to be loyal to the Empire, rather than simply being enslaved and constantly plotting to escape and destroy the Empire forever, but this marked a stark increase in the ambitions of the Empire. If they could control even the dragons, what couldn't they defeat and use? What dark power couldn't they turn into a holy tool to better grow the Empire and bring the light of civilization and morality to the world?

A demon is a tool like any other, just one that wants tear your head off to appease our forgotten God.
