Ancient Fortresses of Erinion

"Even the dead tell stories."

--Cornelius Abadar, when the Erini fortresses were uncovered and connected across the Bay, in 501 AB.

Long ago there was a great war. Waged not with kingdoms, waged not for trifles, but across worlds. This Age of Malevolent Motifs was a time when the Themes invaded the world, as if the Guardians had stepped away and allowed their full force downwards. Sartova was wracked with their power, kingdoms fell, and peoples were destroyed, but it was the world itself that began to fall apart. The core components of the world were fighting against each other. There were sages that said the very existence of the world began to be difficult to prove, as it's spatial coherence slowly lost cohesion.   The Elven Empire of Erinion didn't like that. It wouldn't do at all.   The details of the war they fought with these dimensions are lost, forgotten strangely at the moment the Age turned, and Erinion was destroyed in the , but it lives on in oral tales of the tribes and villages of those that survived in Erinion's embrace. These people found a haven, a circle of defenses against the other worlds, constructed by the Empire. Ten fortresses circling the Bay of Evandyr, each unique and seemingly built of a different style and for a different purpose, and almost for another type of foe. Inside these, countless different peoples, barbaric tribes to refugees from afar, could survive this Age.   And then it ended. For a while it seemed that Erinion had won the war, but it was discovered that years were missing from the calendars of those surviving, as if time had skipped ahead until the war was over. The Empire of Erinion was gone, the capital consumed in great flames, now left to smoldering embers, the skies filled with Devils of the Typhen for many days. The fortresses completely vacant, some left pristine with piles of clothes and set food as if the Erini vanished in a moment, others covered with bones and ancient dead. The survivors remembered nothing of the last few years, and little of the Empire. This became a fascination over the next millennia, as the impervious mystery of the Empire remained in shadow. Even the elven survivors could had none of their magics, their knowledge, their greatness, nor their civilization.   The fortresses remained, however. Silent and everlasting, the last act of the Erini to protect the lesser races from extinction.
