Khetzali (Kett-zALL-ee)
"Did we lose our homeland? Nay! We found it."
In 608 PD, the Theocracy of Azhavin fractured. Known as the Cipher Schism, the religious conflict stemmed from an encoded message delivered by the High Exemplar of Sao: High Exemplar Kisara. Questions on the legitimacy of the sacred message quickly spiraled into violent unrest.
In 609 PD, Kisara was assassinated. Her followers were declared enemies of the state. Anyone found sympathetic to Kisara were publicly persecuted, imprisoned, or even executed.
Feeling that their country had collapsed into madness, Kisara's supporters banded together and fled the country. With nowhere else to go, they journied south, across the Great Desert.
Such a journey should have been impossible. Indeed, the refugees suffered countless losses. However, at their darkest hour, a pack of Savanna Plains Racers miraculously came to their aid. The dragons led the refugees through the blistering Scorch until they arrived in Khetzala, a verdant land in the foothills of the Shattered Peaks.
The miracle of the dragons became the foundation for Khetzali society. Descendants of the original pack were domesticated and eventually bred to become Khetzali war dragons.
In the four centuries since their migration, the Khetzali people have prospered in their new home and developed their own identity. They have sworn to never forget the dragons' kindness.
Culture
Shared customary codes and values
Calling back to their unity against their Azhavinian oppressors, Khetzali people strongly value teamwork and unity. Families are close-knit and continue to live near each other, even several generations removed. Marriage has high importance; everyone is expected to find a partner for life when in their young adult years. Divorce, while legal, is heavily frowned upon. Marital partnerships are expected to be equal, cooperative, and loyal above all else.
Service to the community is seen as noble--especially service in the military. Military members and veterans are highly honored. Other service professions, such as law enforcement, medicine, education, and public sanitation are also respected. Occupations seen as "selfish" do not get the same level of appreciation.
Common Customs, traditions and rituals
The beginning of Dusk years are marked with the Khetzali Dragon Festival, a week-long celebration commemorating the rescue of their people by the Plains Racers. The holiday is celebrated in two parts: first, people respect those lost in the journey by wearing simple clothes, having silent observations, and fasting from rich or fatty foods. This period lasts for three days. On the dawn of the fourth day, the streets come to life with celebration and music. For the rest of the week, Khetzali people dance and feast to celebrate the prosperity that followed the arrival in Khetzala. Celebrations last well into the night, sometimes carrying over into the next morning.
The Festival is the most anticipated holiday in the country. It is well known throughout Southern Auzera as one of the most beautiful and exciting events of the Dusk year.
That's a very interesting article ! I don't know if you drew inspiration from existing religions or myths to create the Khetzali, but I find it resonates a lot with, for example, the story of the Flight to Egypt. I think it's great, whether it's intentional or not, because it mobilizes important concepts and makes you think. It really anchors your story and gives it a solid foundation, which itself raises interesting stakes. Also, I like the way you've used the history of these people to create customs and practices based on what they've experienced. Keep it up !
I didn't consciously pull from an existing religion, but I'm sure I was subconsciously inspired by historical accounts and stories I've heard throughout my life! Thank you so much for your comments and praise <3 <3
