Throndar (TH RON DAR)

the Unflinching, the Warmaker

Throndar is the patron deity of war, conflict, strength, and self reliance in the world of Sanzeia. He is the patron of the race of Orcs and those that rely on strength and combat to survive. He claims the loyalty of a wide variety of lesser war-gods, from species specific minor deities to legendary warriors that have been elevated to a semi-divine status after their deaths. Unlike these traditional, brutal war gods, Throndar himself is far more enigmatic, often styled as a great leader, who uses his subordinates to deliver visions of his will. Those that claim to have visions of the god himself often see only such icons as a heavy helmet with glowing eyes, a flaming sword, or a gauntlet made of obsidian. Most common of the god's subordinates and those most likely to appear to the faithful are the trio of the Brute, the Knight, and the Veteran.

Holy Books & Codes

The Code of Throndar is a lengthy treatise giving conceptual guidance on all matters from battlefield tactics to dinner parties and are written in such a way as to be widely applicable. For example from volume XXXVII, chapter IV: Fire:
When you have set the flames, attack with the wind. Be not smothered by the smoke of your own deeds. When your enemy has set the flames, circle around and attack at his back.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

  • Warriors and generals invoke Throndar personally, thus the god has few established symbols. Shines are often a simple arrangement of weapons, which may be taken up later for use.
  • In art, Throndar is often represented by any sort of weapon or armor and is often stylistically associated with flames.
  • Many warrior cults of Throndar use the symbol of a helmet.

Tenets of Faith

Chief among the beliefs of Throndar is that each person is given the power to live by their own code and morals and to defend that belief; the followers of Throndar have been known to challenge despotic monarchs for no other reason than this. Interestingly enough that codes of Throndar refer to conflicts and obstacles in the same terms regardless of their intended solution; a Throndite sees a battle, raising a child, or seduction as equal trials that must all be approached with equal commitment.   A true follower of Throndar respects those who stand up for what they believe in, even if the follower does not agree with their beliefs.

Holidays

The seventh month, Vaevi, is dedicated to Throndar. It is a time to push through trials and find new success.

Physical Description

Identifying Characteristics

During the Age of Myth, Throndar was seen as one of the most physically manifested gods on Sanzeia. Usually appearing a powerful male warrior, or perhaps inhabiting the bodies of warriors who had proven themselves. In this way the god earned the epithet of "as victorious in bedroom as battlefield." Since that age, the god has reportedly only appeared to faithful in glimpses, and incomplete images.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Throndar himself is said to get along passingly with most of the other divinities. He has been a frequent lover of Shivad'ress and maintains a close friendship with Luciel.   The Dywdian Calendar which tends to place gods opposite their rivals places him opposite Ulmark and while the followers of the two gods have conflicted over various interpretations of honor/order they do not represent a true rivalry. Theoretically, in the prehistory of Sanzeia Throndar may have been placed opposite the The Betrayer who would likely have conflicted with the honorable war god, but the Dywdian calendar was created ages after the fallen god was to have been stricken from existence.   Subordinate deities:
  • Veshka - goddess of violence, slaughter, and revenge
